After reading Husky's thread about the f40 I decided I needed a new one to keep stock and goof around in. I took out straight to the speed tests where I noticed something horrid.

Fourth gear I could hit 200.4mph. Considering the real f40's top speed is 201mph I find this to be a HUGE annoyance and problem.

I know that the f40 isn't the only car with this issue, and that gave me an idea: Start a thread much like motortrendmitch's sound thread except have it be for a proper stock transmission tunes.

What do you guys think?

Indeed the F40 has a wierd transmission. specially with the fact that the first gear is almost like a long second gear. I mean, you can reach almost 60mph/100kmhin first gear.

I think that some cars do need the customizable transmission. I usually don't tune my cars too much, but in some cars it is necessary. I feel that more than being able to use all gears, the most important thing is the final gear, which is not only what it will give you the best top speed, but the best handling and acceleration.

You don't need 7 or 8 gears, as long as your final gear is well adjusted for the type of car. An example would be the previous gen AMG's with their 5 speed auto tranny. It only has 5 gears, but I always thought that transmission was perfect. It gives you the best acceleration and you are able to reach above 200mph/320 with it.

the Viper GTS-R concept is another one with the crappy stock tranny. The car, maxed out, can only use the first 5 gears. 6th is a complete waste of time unless you got one hell of a draft.

I think most of the cars you guys have mentioned have the transmissions like that in real-life, with the last gear as an overdrive for highway cruising.

The 6th or 7th gear is for cruising on the freeway, not for racing. They need this extra long gear in order for the car to reach the manufacturer claimed MPG rating.

I agree with this explanation. Many cars with 5 speed transmissions have a 1:1 4th gear with 5th being overdrive for cruising. Some 6spds such as my '01 Camaro in real life are the same way, 1:1 in 4th gear, with 5th and 6th as overdriven gears. Many drag racers install a final drive gear that runs out their 1:1 gear at the end of the 1/4 mile. In the F40, the final drive gear and the trans gears seem quite stretched for top speed.

All Vipers have a really tall 6th gear.

Also, was your F40 full broken in? What about an oil change? 0.6mph is not really that big of a deal. There are bigger problems with the game then cars missing they're top speed by less than a mile an hour.

Indeed it isn't, yesterday I was racing with the Nissan 350Z, and looked at the Stock tranny settings... Top Speed: 242MPH.. :yuck: ridiculous

That's a theoretical top speed, it will still be drag limited to a much lower speed. Ford that matter.

Yea but if your in six and you floor it the car will accelerate a little. Some of these cars in the game, you shift in 6 and it slows down

It could be down to wind resistance is greater than the engine power at the given gear.

That's because 6th gear in some cars (Viper, Z06) is not intended to achieve top speed. It's designed for highway cruising to get the best mileage.

Even thought eh 6th speed in a Viper and most cars with the T56 gearbox is useless, it is like most of you say; this gear is not for racing. I find no problems with this gearbox since its five other gears are perfectly done. The ACR with it's extra 100HP might need a slightly longer 5th gear when drafting, but it's enough to reach 320kmh in stock form by itself. More than enough for me.

Just like acascianelli said, this is like an overdrive. At high speed, the revs drop so much that the car no longer has the ability to "break" it's way through the wind. That's why you slow down. It's perfectly normal.

At lower speeds the wind resistance is much lower, so the car won't slow down. Perfect for gas milage. Try and cruise in 6th at around 60mph/100kmh with any car that has the Tremec T56 and you'll see it doesn't slow down at all, even with the gas pedal at 50%

There are a bunch of cars with the T56 in the game, btw. The Vipers (except the ACR), most Corvettes, Camaro's, some Aston Martins, some other Chevrolets and if I'm not mistaken, the Mustang Cobra R (though the fifth gear seems a bit shorter).

But this still doesn't make sense. When they do a top speed run irl they have to use sixth gear. I understand that top gear is always a little bit higher, but not like this.

My f40 did have the oil change. I wasn't concerned with the speed I was achieving, but with what gear I was in when I did.

Most tests that I've seen in magazines like Motortrend or Car and Driver mention that the top speed was reached at certain gear (if they do a proper test). For example, an old test of these magazines with the old RT/10 Viper, managed to reach a maximum speed of around 165mph in 5th gear. They did emphasized that the 6th gear was just an overdrive and it was useless during the test. I wish I could remember the magazine that did this test, I'll try and look it up.

Again, in some cars these high gears are not for maximum speed.

You might want to read up on thrust vs. gear ratios, torque multiplication etc. to understand why a car can go slower in a higher gear. The maximum speed of a car is where its thrust balances its drag. If more than one gear crosses that line, in different places, it'll have different (non-rev-limited) top speeds in those gears.

The F40 is known for its tall gearing in real life, but I have no idea whether GT has it right, and I can't be bothered to check right now.

According to Supercars.net:
Code:
[size=2]
1st 2.77:1
2nd 1.71:1
3rd 1.23:1
4th 0.96:1
5th 0.77:1

final 2.90:1[/size]

Isn't the F40 modeled in the game a 1992 US spec?

My Mustang (IRL) is geared for ~206mph redlined in 5th, but I can guarantee that it'll struggle to hit 155mph

Got it, I understand now. Thank you thank you

Can i just say, the Maclaren F1 is completly hopeless in stock form, supposed 240mph, only does about 225mph.

Also the Veyron only does 248-249mph with standard trans, it will do 260mph but you need to draft. Change gears a tiny bit, and it will do 255mph on its own.

Another faulty car is the 2004 C5 Z06. The published top speed is 176 mph. On Route X I can hit 201 mph on the max speed test alone, in 6th gear. Bone stock except for an oil change. The oil change only adds 21 hp.

IRL 6th is really just a double overdrive. You will hit the true top speed of 176 in 5th.

This thread had blown my mind a couple times today... I'm about to get out my laptop and do some hard core googling on this. Il be back.

The XJ220 has the same problem, even after an oil change and engine rebuild. Supposed top speed is 220 MPH, but I can barely reach it.

Can someone please clarify if this has been fixed?

The official top speed of the XJ220 was only 217mph, and it had to be modified to achieve it. They ran it with no catalytic converters and a raise rev limiter. And that 217mph was done on the Nardo ring so it's not a true top speed. The calculate top speed on a straight road was something like 224mph.

I think the XJ220's performance in GT5 is pretty accurate to it's real life counterpart.

Lotus Evora has a stupidly long gearbox , the ratios are far too long for that amount of power ...

A real-world complaint of the actual car; they offered a sports / close ratio box that livened it up a bit, but there now only appears to be an option for the flappy-paddle box ("Intelligent Precision Shift") and the "sports" has become the standard...
Comparing ratios from here, and here:

Code:
[U]Gear	Sports	Normal	IPS[/U]
I	3.538	3.538	3.300
II	1.913	1.913	1.900
III	1.407	1.218	1.420
IV	1.091	0.860	1.000
V	0.9697	0.790	0.713
VI	0.8611	0.638	0.608

[U]Final drive:[/U]
1st-4th	3.777	3.777	3.685
5th-6th	3.238	3.238	3.685

Griffith I must say. You excelin every post you make.

I don't always post.
But when I do, I make sure it's some important crap.

Haha, in fairness, I'm just channelling Google with this stuff; aided by a fuzzy memory of someone's opinion of the car.

None of the initial results fit the context at all, should I search further? The only one that could perhaps be possessive is the acronym for World of Outlaws. I'm still suspecting typo/not knowing how to spell "woe" or how to pluralize it("woes").

Just having fun -- not criticizing the thread, carry on... although there are others, I don't know of a definitive one.
