(woo 1st review, lets see how it goes)

Farenheit (PS2, By Atari and Quanticdream)

Website: www.atari.com/fahrenheit

One day i was just reading through Offiicaly Playstation 2 Magazine when one game caught my eye, now I had never seen this game in the previews or news so i was a little shocked to be seeing an unknown game be given 8/10, so I gave it a chance and read the review.

The idea seemed revolutionary.

So i got hold of a demo from a pal and even though it lasted about 5 minutes, i was up till 2 am playing it.

I went into GAME that weekend and brought it without any hesitation, wacked it in the PS2 and was prepared to be amazed, and I was not let down one bit.

The game is set in New York in 2009 and you play as 3 different characters, Lucas Kane (Main Character), Carla Valenti and Tyler Miles. Now I will try to explain the game without giving away too many spoilers.

As Lucas Kane you commit a murder, except, you don't rememebr doing it out of you own will, its as if your, lets say, possesed? During the game you are continuously trying to stay out the way of the 2 detectives leading the case, Carla Valenti and Tyler Miles, which in turn you play as trying to find out who commited the murder and what the motives are.

So in theory your trying to hide yourself from... yourself.

As the story goes deeper and deeper you get more and more hooked on, first time i played it i was on for a good 8 hours, it feels like your in the cinema at times watching a psychological thriller, but you choose what the 'actors' do.

Now for the revolutionary part,

The levels are totally interacvtive, you feel like having a drink when your in your apartment? Go for the whiskey if you must but just make sure you don't take sleeping tablets after.. (I learnt the hard way) You feel like practicing on the guitar? Go ahead its there, all these factors make a difference to your mental health, which you must keep track of all the time, let it go down too much and all hell breaks loose. The controls for the game are also very different, in the action scenes you don't button bash like in Tekken, you press the corrisponding direction indecated on the screen, very 'dance uk'. Its highly effective since it keeps you on your toes, its also not too nice since your focusing more on the directions than on the action itself, (Although you can later unlock the action scenes for your enjoyment).

So all in all its an unknown game that has some revolutionary ideas, its action is second to none and its story is gripping till the very end.

Pros: Revolutionary, you will not find another game like it. Fact. Highly addictive.

Cons: I felt the graphics could have been a little bit sharper, and you do get distracted in the fight scenes by the little direction indicators.

Note: It does have a limited length, but thats only if you choose to do it quickly, there are multiple endings that you do have to work for.

Rating: 9.5 out of 10.

It's definitely among the best games I've played in the last two years, but there are several flaws to the game:

1. The stealth gameplay sequences should not have been bothered with.
2. The reaction mini game doesn't really allow you to catch the nicely coreographed on screen action.
3. The mini game graphics lack brightness and color on some occasions, making them hard to see on the background.
4. The pacing and writing falls apart on the last third and quarter. As the 1up post mortem states that there was a lot more material to the whole fictional universe
I assume this was a publishing/market decision.
5. Controls don't follow through on camera change. Annoying.

But the strong points are the plot, the characters, the pacing, the presentation, the immersion, the writing, the voice acting, the animation and the attention to detail.

If they decide to support the game on the PC and patch some of the flaws, the QD's next game will be a definite must-buy for me. Very promising developer that really is about the game and its audience.

I'd pick up the game if my PS2 hadn't kicked the bucket.... It seems to be a very neat title. I saw the preview in a OPM and thought it might be worth the money.

I do have a serious if funny question: why is it called Fahrenheit outside of the US if the US is the only country that uses such a measure? :dunce:

I've just been playing it. Its a great game - somewhat like those 'Choose Your Own Adventure' books.

My only complaint is the control system is seriously screwed. Some better graphics to go with it would've been nice too, but oh well – gameplay > graphics.

Yes I've only heard great things about this game...I'll be sure to pick it up soon. :)

I like it, i think its different and much much better then the normal x button to select something.

My Rating: 5 out of 10

I played through the game twice. The first time I liked it, the story is pretty good, the graphics and locations are nice. The characters are developed in a very good way.... but after playing through it a 2nd time I felt cheated.

No matter what decissions you make, the story will be the same. It's like playing through a glass tube. You see all types of possibilities to go to, while only being able to go in one direction. The 2nd time I played through the game it felt like a chore. No matter what I did, it was the same story as when I played through it the first time, making completely different decissions. You have either 2 directions to go: 1. End of story, or 2. Down the same road again. No different scenarios. Only at the very end it matters which decission you take and what ending you get to see.

Not to mention the action is LAME. Sure, it LOOKS spectacular, but it isn't. Whatever you do, it is pressing a sequence of buttons. You can't even really pay attention to what is happening, because you focus too much on the controls.

Don't get me wrong, I wanted to like the game. I bought it right away, played through it twice in 5 days and sold it because I definitely wouldn't want to play it again. The idea is great, implementation is poor. Some scenes which I won't mention are pretty cool, but they're so short that it isn't worth buying the game for.

Anyway, I give it a 5 because the first time playing through the game it is worth an 8, but the 2nd time it was worth a 2. So in the end it definitely is a semi-interactive movie with many ideas jacked from movies like the Matrix. Short and not much replay value, so worth a rental, not a purchase.
