How did i manage to get an odd number result?

I made a slight error adding up your points, so you actually have a different odd number result.

HHmmmmm.... My points seem to have gone slightly in the wrong direction...

I'll keep my gob shut next time!

1. (Physics) - How many states of matter are there (if you're unfamiliar with states of matter, "solid" is one)?

Though you're only generally taught 3 (solid, liquid, gas) and may, if you're lucky, learn of a fourth (plasma), it's held that there are SIX states (Fermionic Condensate and Bose-Einstein Condensate).

However, depending on how you define "state" - plasma is, after all, just gas without electrons, and the condensates are just cold stuff where certain sub-atomic particles (fermions and bosons respectively) behave in an unusual way - there may be many more, including supersolid, superfluid, degenerate matter, neutronium, strange matter, quark-gluon plasma, strongly- and weakly- symmetrical matter.

It should be noted that anyone who Wikipised this and said "15" is wrong, because Gel is not a separate state (and it even clearly says this on the site) but a funky property, like a non-Newtonian liquid.

So the "correct" two pointer is "six", though anything from 7 up to 14 got a point for not being technically incorrect.

2. (Motorsport) - Who was the last US national to become champion of Champ Car/CART?

That would be Jimmy Vasser, in 1996. Since then an Italian (Alex Zanardi, twice), a Colombian (Jaun Pablo Montoya), a Canadian (Paul Tracy), two Brazilians (Gil den Ferran, twice, and Cristiano da Matta) and, after changing to Champ Car, a Frenchman (Sebastien Bourdais, twice) have kept the US off the top spot.

3. (Geography) - What is the administrative capital of the US State of Wisconsin?

Madison.

Incidentally, after all the whining about non-American questions, someone actually said "What's with all the US questions?" this week.

You can please some of the people...

4. (TV) - O'Neill, Carter, Teal'c, Jackson, Quinn and Mitchell are all members/former-members of an eponymous unit in which US television series (also aired on Sky in the UK)

Stargate SG-1.

Stargate is a film, not a TV series, and didn't contain Jonas Quinn, Cameron Mitchell, Samantha Carter or Teal'c. Stargate = wrong.

Well, 1 point.

5. (Sport) - John Lowe was the first man to do it on television in 1984. Shaun Greatbatch was the first man to do it live on television in 2002. Phil Taylor has done it three times on television (more than anyone else) in 2002, 2004 and 2005. American Paul Lim is the only person to do it in a World Championship in 1990. Do what?

They all acheived the 9 dart finish.

In darts, the score of 501 required, with a double to checkout, can be acheived in a minimum of 9 darts (in three ways, in fact).

6. (Literature) - Neville the part-time barman, Norman Hartnell (not to be confused with the other Norman Hartnell), Barry the Sprout, Elvis and famous 1950s genre detective Lazlo Woodbine (some call me Laz) are all running characters in the books of which severely brain-wronged British author?

These characters all appear repeatedly throughout the novels of Robert Rankin.

If you're unfamiliar with his works, read them. Really.

7. (Gaming) - Who were the original ten manufacturers in the first Gran Turismo game? (one point per pair)

These are:
Aston Martin, Chevrolet, Dodge, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Toyota and TVR.

Acura - who aren't a separate manufacturer anyway - did not appear in the Japanese, and hence first, release. But well done to anyone who mentioned them additionally to the other 10. You didn't get any points - 1 point per pair - but you can have a warm glow of satisfaction.

Vilos Cohaagen (Total Recall), Dick Jones (Robocop) and Andrew Bogomil (Beverly Hills Cop) were all played by Ronny Cox.

9. (Numbers/Music) - How many gifts, in total, are given by "My true love" in the song "The Twelve Days of Christmas"?

The answer is 364.

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me a partridge in a pear tree. (1)
On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me two turtle doves AND a partridge in a pear tree. (3 - running total of 4)
On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me three French hens, two turtle doves AND a partridge in a pear tree. (6 - running total of 10)

And so on, until, on the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me (depending on regional variations, the 9/10/11/12 gifts are interchangeable) twelve lords a-leaping, eleven ladies dancing, ten drummers drumming, nine pipers piping, eight maids a-milking, seven swans a-swimming, six geese a-laying, five gold rings, four calling (or Colly) birds, three French hens, two turtle doves AND a partridge in a pear tree. (78 - running total of 364)

10. (Inventions) - Of what is Sir Frank Whittle credited with the invention?

Anyone who didn't get this, go and stand in the corner. Or go out and cut your own switch - I'll deal with you later.

It's the jet engine.

I'll have to not be as lazy next week and do the next quiz, thats two I've missed.

****SWITCH ACQUIRED****

BTW famine -- did you ever find the true correct form of our word at hand? I'm pretty sure we're both correct...if I'm wrong, then I'll go cut another switch...

Well, I know that Chris Judge, who plays him, Brad Wright, producer/writer, and the subtitlers all spell it with a c...

Right.....some spell it with a 'q' and others with a 'c'.....

But I'll give it to you.

BTW -- don't you have a fanclub?

I read Liquid Crystal was a state of its own in some HDTV forum a while ago. Lol.

Anyway, I thought whittle did something with planes. So, I was like halfway there.
