Mine will be replaced because of too much axle movement.
If this was not the case, i still would be contacting support because the burning issue surely must have damaged the wheel somehow, even if it's working fine for now.
The smell was so bad that realy thought someting had burned up.
If this was a tv or any other electrical appliance, which you normally leave plugged in, i would not even use it any more.
I'd completely understand if it was unsupported wheel connected to the xbox but in the case of the CSR Elite, you have Forza's name prominently placed on the wheel. It's pathetic and disgusting. What if someone were to accidentally leave it on on their way to a late appointment and came home to burnt house/apartment.
I guess. If you want to deal with the hassle of waiting a couple of weeks with a broken wheel, just to test the waters - Hey, knock yourself out.
Otherwise, I'd say avoid leaving the wheel powered up when attached to the Xbox. A quick Google will show this is not a particularly unusual event and is likely due to a dashboard update meant to lock out non-approved peripherals.
But really, no one knows for sure. Fanatic have been unable to replicate the problem in-house using a variety of firmwares and dashboard revisions.
All I know is that, for some unknown reason, the CSRE will sometimes destroy itself when the Xbox360 goes into suspend mode. If you're not around to turn it off immediately, the primary FFB motor will overheat and this is irreparable.
I got lucky. And I don't know if Fanatec would be so kind a second time. My advice: Just turn off the wheel when you're not using it.

I doubt Microsoft bothers to inform Fanatec when they do a dashboard update. Just because Fanatec paid some $ to be the Official Wheel of a single Xbox360 game, in and of itself guarantees practically nothing. You're talking about a very small, niche producer of fairly exotic and rare peripherals that's based in Germany. Not exactly what MS worries about.
It's highly unlikely that MS bothers to do any sort of testing beyond just making sure the 360 works with the Official game pad and, perhaps, their Speed Wheel (which is actually OK, btw).
So, I agree with you from a moral standpoint. But from a practical one, I'm just happy that the wheel works so incredibly well - aside from this (rather serious) problem. At least Fanatec stands behind their product and has great support lately. No complaints there.
