There are a lot of car magazines out there, some great, and even more crap. Personally, my favorite is EVO, an excellent magazine from the UK, that focuses on performance cars. The latest issue features a Koenigsegg CCR and it's attempt at 250 mph. It just blows other magazines away in content and quality IMO. Only downside is that its $10 and hard to find in the states.

Yep, EVO's pretty good. It's a shame we get it a month late in North America, though. I grew up with my dad reading Road and Track, so it's another one I tend to pick up from time to time. Great pics, great stories, and miles better than Motor Trend and Car and Driver.

I get D-Sport, Sport Compact Car and Turbo on a monthly basis... they really are pretty much the only ones that still feature some interesting cars/articles from time to time in that market segment. I might pick up St00pid Street from time to time, when I really, really don't have anything left to read (no, I mean really, really nothing to read!)

Ohh good thing its in the states can you tell me if there are any stores that sells them here in the states? I like C&D , Autoweek and the usual reveiws magazines.

Hmm, there was a same thread regarding this about a year ago, hmm, oh well.

My choices:

+Euro:
-Auto Motor und Sport (Germany)-> All german at its finest, too bad I can't read German.
-EVO
-Car
-What Car
-Top Gear

+Asian:
-Option
-Best Motoring-> Okay it's not a mag (in fact its a video), but who cares.
-Car and Driver Hong Kong
-4x4 Magazine

+Autrailian:
-Motor

+USA:
-Car and Driver
-Consumer Reports
-Consumer Guide
-Edmunds.com-> Who cares if its online, they have books on B&N and Borders.
-Sport Compact Car
-Honda Tuning
-Auto Week
-Motorweek-> Just like Best Motoring.

who in the hell reads consumer reports and consumer guides for information about cars?

i once read an article (years and years ago) when they lamabsted sports cars in a comparo for having small trunk space. and the very next issue they were comparing midsizers andwhining about thier handling. same issue had a tire comparison and they were rating all terrain and all season tires withotu descriminating bewtween them. i stopped reading that then and there.

i get CAR and SCC. they suckless than the others.

Sport Compact Car
Car and Driver
Road and Track
Euro Tuner
Speed (from the creators of Road and Track)
Nissan Performance Magazine
Turbo

;)

MOTOR Magazine (Australia)
New Zealand Performance Car Magazine (um... New Zealand?)

I prefer the former even though i only buy a couple of mags a year.

EVO - all the cars you do want to read about - and none of the ones you don't care about.

Autosport - otherwise known as the 'bible' in our family

Road and Track (I like their layout better than C&D or Motor Trend)
Top Gear (Jeremy Clarkson!)
Evo (no lame cars featured)
Car (the third British car mag at my local book store, another solid magazine)

Car and Driver ( for about 13 years )
Excellence ( porsche magazine )
'Boost' by Car and Driver ( initial mag was awesome ! ) only a quarterly though
and a few others once in a while, like turbo, or Performance..

Well alot of people here read them. It helps us out when buying a new car or when a family member or friend needs help.

MOTOR magazine, sometimes I get a little sick of the constant Ford vs Holden/FPV vs HSV features but I suppose they are the two brands that come out with comparable performance cars on the most frequent basis in Australia.

Evo isn't bad either, I don't buy too many UK mags because they tend to be a bit pricey (hey I'm a poor uni student ;) )

Evo.

Simple choice. That is all I will ever look at. Sometimes I'd take a look through Car or Top Gear, but I have never bought one. If Evo's weren't 12.50$ an issue here, I'd get one once a month. Best articles about the best cars. Not to mention the greatest photography around. Around Christmas we get the evo Car of the Year issue. That is the best read ever. Usually over 40 pages of motoring Nirvana.

I also like looking through a Sport Compact Car once in a while, for a fresh wave of cars. What I hate about that one is the amount of dumb ads and fairly sub-par photography.

Popular Hot Rodding mag. Coveres everything from Ford to Dodge to Chevy. And several of the guys in the mag I have met in real life at the Hot Rod Power Tour or Woodward Dream cruise. 👍

Evo and Autocar both on subscription.

Evo is by far and away the best written car mag around at present (with simply stunning photography). As was is previous incarnation 'Performance Car'.

Autocar is my weekly fix for motor industry news and bits and pieces on the more volume orientated stuff. However the annual 0-100-0 mph and handling tests are quite excellent.

Also get Autosport most weeks, good motorsport coverage from around the world, although I use the web just as much.

Get the following if something is worth having a look at

Auto Express
Top Gear
Car
Road & Track

The last one is on the web, but Richard Porter who writes the site does also write for Evo and thats http://www.sniffpetrol.com/index.html

Don't you just wish car ads were like that (and those are just the ones the mods won't take down - I hope), have a good look around the sniff petrol archive, its well worth it.

BTW anyone in the UK Auto Express have an offer on this week, get '50 Years of Ferrari' on DVD for £1.95 P&P, as well as other offers from Duke video. Just ordered that and 'Porsche - The Legendary Cars' both on DVD for under 11 quid.

Sniffpetrol is a fantastic site and funnily enough I was just about to post a link there myself. My read of choice would also have to be Evo, but I haven' read an English car mag for a long long time. I have plenty of catching up to do when I go back home on Thursday!

EDIT: To all the guys who live outside the UK and enjoy Evo - Why not get a 12 month overseas subsrciption? I'm sure the prices would be far more reasonable then.

I like Evo. They understand the difference between a car with ability and a car you can enjoy. But they're sometimes pretentious and they occasionally whine about dumb stuff like a pack of precious little princesses. Car is pretty good too. TopGear is useful for lining a birdcage.

I like Car and Driver. They have a good sense of humor and they're not afraid to mince words. If a car sucks, they will let you know. Sometimes, they make fun of readers who send hate mail. That's cool. 👍 Road & Track is alright for their pretty technical pages, but they write like they are afraid to offend anyone. Automobile is a rip off nowadays. Same price as the other two US mags, but you get 30% of the cars reviewed.

Sports Car International is not bad. Like of like a US based Evo with less interesting cars. They do tend to focus too much on expensive cars almost no one can afford, though.

Grass-roots Motorsports. Great magazine, but with just a few too many ads. IMO, they are more trustworthy in their praise or damnation than Evo or C&D. Sometimes though, they have the opposite problem of Evo and SCI: too many articles on restoring cars that are older than I am.

I only buy evo now.

I used to buy Cars and Car Conversions and a Portuguese magazine as well, but unfortunately both ceased publication about a year ago. CCC was a great magazine.

Agreed. Sometimes they can't quite stop themselves from having the stereotypical pretentious Brit attitude toward us unwashed redneck Yanks. But otherwise it's an excellent magazine (despite excessive reliance on the word 'bespoke'), though even if I lived in England I'd never have a remote chance of owning most of the cars they review.

I do too, but I never buy it. It's a "stand in front of the racks" read. My college roomate went on to be technical editor until his untimely death during a high-speed test run. For a while it seemed as if it was physically and in fact conceptually impossible for BMW to create something other than perfection in C&D's eyes, but they seem to have gotten over that. I never read any of the other mainstream US magazines.

This is my absolute favorite car magazine ever. I've subscribed for about 8 years and it's the only car mag I pay money for on any regular basis. They review fun cars that I( may actually have a chance of owning, and more importantly, they review used cars as well, which means I get info on potential used cars I'd be considering. The annual "$200X Challenge" is an incredibly great idea - so great I recreated it in GT3 format.

Whoa. You were roommates with Don Schroeder?

Predictably, this bothered me not one bit. :D But Audi is their pet brand now, and all us Bimmer lovers have cancelled our subscriptions. :P

Yep. And they are all racers, so if they say X car handles better than Y car, you can safely bet they are know what the heck they're talking about.

Yes indeed. He was my roomie for 2 years at Lehigh. He used to borrow my Le Mans ragtop to go to marching band practice, because it was cooler than his old Satellite slant 6. Although we didn't keep up much after college, I did chat with him a few times. Overall he was a good guy.

And since my wife's new car just soundly thrashed the A4 in their "under $30k" writeup, leagues of Audi owners are sending in indignant letters as we speak...

I used to spend a bit of time on the GRM message boards, too; they're all great, personable guys in addition to being knowledgeable. The best car magazine in America.

I like EVO and Sports Car and Classic. They're both British, and evn though they're pricey, I prefer them over most of the US magazines.

Car and Driver's prose is far and away the best in any car magazine. Comparing it to any other car magazine (dare I say almost any other periodical?) is like comparing Dickens to Harry Potter.

I usally just read Sport Compact Car. It's the only one I'll buy. I can't stand most new car mags. like "Motor Tend and Autoweek", well mainly I just HATE motor tend and autoweek. I think they have the dumbest, most unreliable, b.s. articles. Car and Driver is okay, not great but not full of b.s.
