It's a tie for me between the SLK55 and the CLS55.

If you were a prospective owner, the fact that your £140k, 600bhp SL65 looks almost exactly (to the untrained eye at least) like the cooking SL350 would be a huge bonus.

I think that the AMG SLs are quite discreet compared with some of the others. The AMG SLK, for example, is quite in-yer-face compared with the lower models in the range.

Yeah. Thats what many car mags said; if you're going to spend upwards of $180,000 for a SL65, why not just instead buy a SL55 for $120,000 and save yourself $60,000? It looks 99.9% identical, save for the V12 badge and the "6" instead of "5"

The difference would be prestige and the fact that you can say that you have a V12--this is just what I'd suppose I've never been rich enough to even worry about such a problem--I wish I were rich so I could worry about; "hmm should I go for the V12 or stick with the regular V8?". :sly:

Well got to be one of the 65 AMG models, you would never get tired of over 700lb.ft of torque so its a close call between the CL65 and SL65, but a drop top would be nice for the summer. I vote SL65.

I dunno I think the SL65 sounds more like a winner than the SLR....Let's see.

The SLR has 617hp and 440lb ft of torque.
The SL65 on the other hand has 604hp and 738lb ft of torque!
The SLR weighs 3858lbs while the SL65 weighs in at a hefty 4494lbs.
SLR 1/4mile times were: 11.6 sec @ 125 mph.
On a 300ft skidpad the SLR pulls .97g's.
The SL65's 1/4mile times were:11.9 sec @ 123 mph
On a 300ft skidpad the SL65 pulls .93g's.
Oh ya the SLR costs around $455k USD.
SL65 costs slightly below $187k USD.

While the SL65 is 636lb's heavier than the SLR it's still able to be just as fast as the SLR....IMO the SLR is just way too ugly for me, while the SL65 is much more elegant and classy looking. The SLR seems to scream "Look at me! I'll blow your doors off!" While the SL65 seems to play it cool and not let other's know how much of a beast it is under sheeps clothing, which is exactly how I like it. Hmm if the SL65 could lose just a bit a weight it'd be just as fast as the SLR. Now imagine if the SL65 weighed the same as the SLR. One last question, is there any videos of an SLR competing with an SL65 on the track? That'd be interesting.

I already knew...well, okay, MOST of that. That's what I was referring to, in fact. The SL65 is much cheaper than the SLR McLaren, but its performance is extremely close to the SLR's. That's why it's my favorite of the AMGs (the fact that Sayoko drives one in the Ah! My Goddess anime is just icing on the cake).

I voted for the SL65 and E55. Hooray for über-torque, and the ultimate sleeper (E55 wagon)!!

mine is the AMG hammer. the car that cemented AMG as a player and not a wanna be.

they took a 5.0 liter engine from the then S class, the W126, designed and built thier own twin cam cylinder heads and shoved it in the W124 mid size body to build a 300hp sedan when the corvette was making roughly 240hp. later engines were bored and stroked to 6.0 liters and even more hp. the AMG hammer was the inspiration behind mercedes' riposte to the BMW M5, the epochal porsche assembled 500E.

a few coupe versions were made. this picture represents a "widebody" a style which was fashionable in the 80s. im sure you all know what a sedan in this bodystyle looked like.

The SL65 AMG does it for me, Bucket loads of torque and power covered up by very superb exterior styling makes this AMG the right choice :D

Have to say the last time i saw one i wasn't too impressed. It was around 2am after clubbing and the guy had his top down in the freezing weather and to top it all off he was wearing sunglasses!

Sad thing is that he was arriving at the club not leaving it, therefore alcohol can't be an excuse. :nervous:

Hey man, I give props to anyone willing to drive a convertible with its top down in not-so-warm-and-sunny weather. :)

Also, maybe he was listening to Corey Hart's "Sunglasses at Night" on his car stereo.

It was the E55 for while since it just as fast as F360 in a straight line. I guess The up coming R63 or the CLS55. Was a little dissapointed with the handling in GT4 with the E55, cant really smoke the tires with anything above N3.

Could have been listening to Corey Hart's 'Sunglasses at Night' as Wolfe2x7 said which i would be prepared to forgive him for!

We never did get to know what your favourite AMG model is GT4_Rule!

Yeah, exactly what you said. Thats why people was saying that SLR is the biggest rip-off in GT4 and real life on another thead. SLR is ugly and it weighs too much for a supercar. A 3900lb beast for $420k that goes 0-60 in close to 4 seconds, anyone?

I think the thing you and all of the other SLR doubters are forgetting is that at that price you are buying exclusivity and not necessarily performance. If performance and price is the only consideration to ones decision in car buying then they would be running around in an 88 foxbody mustang with about 10k in engine mods.

From everything I have ever read on the SLR it is a truely terrific car. I would certainly proudly own one if I had an insane supercar bankroll. You also have to consider that this car is more of an investment then something you drive. It's more of a collector item really and I am sure the people who buy SLRs have SL 65s for their daily driver.

Back on topic though, the SL 65 AMG is my favorite AMG. It's sexy, it's quick as hell, it's a torque monster, and it has all the prestige of a high end mercedes. I will never forget the one and only time I saw one on the road. It was beautiful and the sound of it when he down shifted took my breath away.

Either the G-Wagon, which I pretty think is the sweetest SUV ever made, or the new R-class van/wagon/crossover thing with so much power it's rediculious.

Uhhh this thing...

The R-class is ugly from the beginning and the AMG stuff doesnt make it better either ;)

You see how M-B is trying to avoid using the term "van" for R-class? Grand Sports Tourer....what a joke.

a van is a van is a van is a van.

and an ugly van is an affront to society.

I personally like the R-Class. It may be van like in porportions, but once you get close and get into one, your opinion might change. I do think the styling could have been a bit more streamlined to fit the Mercedes-Benz lineup just a bit better, but it gets a 10 in effort, and maybe an 8 in execution.

Look at it this way: If the popularity of the R-Class is as big as what they say it is getting to be, I would not be completely surprised to see something similar rolling out of Wolfsburg and Munich sometime soon.

True.

M-B might be acting as a mine detector here, testing waters for a potential new market.

If only Mercedes would let people get AMG's with good old stickshifts.

The excessive torque of some engines will probably shred the drivetrain into pieces though...:sly:

M-B have never been good at making manuals, I think.

It might be a van, but that van is fast as hell.

mercedes make plenty of manuals for cars sold in ther markets other than north america. please keep your ign'ance of international car markets out of this thread.

mercedes simply doenst make a manaul transmission option for thier V8 models. all 6 cylinder or less engines have a manual transmission option, even if that is not an option here.

and thats not to say that they have never made one. they did. but the last v8 manual was offered in the mid seventies R107 350SL. one or two might have made thier way into the W116 350SEs of that vintage.

based on the lease rates for the R class here in southern california, the R class is sitting on lots. theres a current R class lease advertised at less than $300 a month. i believe that makes it the least expensive mercedes to lease. but i could be wrong.

i got close to one yesterday at work, it was parked two cars over. my auto curiosity got the better of my revulsion. the verdict; its even more ill proportioned up close.
