The shark fin isn't going to take up 30kg, but with the increase in weight, teams will be looking to cut it as close to the minimal acceptable weight as they possibly can. A short shark fin might only weigh an extra kilo, but that may not be worth it for the gain it will give since a shorter shark fin will be less efficient than an anchored one.
 
You didn't miss much - "We're very excited for the new car, we're going to be fighting for the World Championship, the car is the product of a lot of hard work, etc., etc."

I figured as much. The good bits I wanted to hear while I was still listening, anyway
 
Yeah, standard car launch rhetoric. There was also a bit where Domenicali predicted a closer championship this year, but given that the Red Bull RB6 was so good that Vettel would have comfortably won the 2010 championship with two races to spare were it not for reliability problems (and brainfade), I'd say Domenicali is hoping for a closer championship more than actually predicting it.

Apparently Ferrari disagree with that assessement. I really don't see how the different engine covers have such a significant difference in weight.
 
Sorry to bring up Pirelli again, but I hope they put their logo in the inside of the tyre, otherwise having it colour coded is useless for onboard shots because you can't see the outer sidewall.

As for the F150, it looks okay, I'm surprised about the size of the sidepod inlets, they are smaller now despite the addition of KERS. Also the sidepods are not undercut anymore and remind me of the MP4-24.

I'm not sure whether they ran the linked suspension last year, it will be interesting to see how flat the car is under load.
 
Well its right there on the F150....its fair to assume its still going to be there at Bahrain.
If anyone doesn't run a shark fin, its not due to weight, its due to the design not necessarily fitting in with the rest of their car's design with regards to air-flow and packaging.
 
Sharkfins like that help straighten out the airflow as the two airflow streams converge from the airbox, if it wasn't there you would get alot of turbulence which effects the beam wing and also cooling.

Clearly, you did think it was a shark fin originally, otherwise your original quote of Bee wouldn't make much sense at all.

What Mercedes ran last year was quite different. Mercedes' engine cover was effectively a blade with an intake through it. Whereas this one is like a normal cover but with an extension on the back. I can't remember if it has been, but I remember there was talk of banning Mercedes' version because there were worries about effects in roll over (digging into the ground and the like).

I think inturludes was referring the the mini sharkfin that Mercedes ran last year which is similar to the F150 this year, not the roll structure. Maybe this image will help.

Whether you call it a sharkfin or extended engine cover is up to you.
 
Yes I know, but that was different as the entire "blade" section went through the airbox. A lot more of the engine cover was flat, rather than shaped. Whereas the F150 has an ordinary airbox with an additional extension. A different concept.
Observe the shape of the engine cover, how its far smaller and ends at the "Mercedes-Benz" logo. Then compare it to the F150 or a pre-2008 engine cover.
 
I see what you mean.

On the F150 you have the little extended engine cover, and just before it either side you have hot air exits, the extended cover allows for more air to be sucked out of the rear to aid cooling, I think that's one of the main aims for it.
 
Pirelli not curving around with the tyres is what's really annoying me, a shame, because it's going to affect every other car. :indiff:

Exactly what I thought earlier today. They looked awesome in a retro way on the tests last year with the chunky yellow block capital text wrapping around the tyre.

My definition of a shark fin is something that looks like a shark fin. It points up, not down. The Mercedes (and now Ferrari) cover points like a blade.
 
Well, the original post that started this discussion was a question with regards to the engine cover on the F150, which was answered as a shark fin. There was no question of definition then.
 
Loving the new Marlboro I mean Ferrari logo on the engine cover.
 
So I guess this is the first picture of the adjustable rear wing in action. I didn't actually think the angle of the wing would be adjusted that much! Bye-bye Santander!

The car looks quite different on the track, the high nose reminds me a lot of the mid-90s cars. Looks a little like a FW18 nose.
Its also kind of weird seeing on one support strut for the rear wing.
 
Well the car is basically named to be a tribute to Italy. Not really.


Why not allow the rear wings to be adjustable twice per lap, just like the front wings?

People are already afraid that the adjustable rear wing will make overtaking far too easy as it is ... and your solution to this problem is to double its capacity?

Isn't it only allowed to be used when behind another car? And people said that the adjustable front wings would help overtaking, but they haven't, now have they?

The 'shark fin' as it's known helps stability through turns, although the length of it is no longer allowed to reach the rear wing. Expect every team to use it on their car. :)
I know it was solely for performance, but imo, made a lot of the cars look kind of...well, not silly, just not as good looking? This new one looks really nice.
