Ferrari F2012 launch

Some people just don't have style, McLaren do :sly:

*Cough*

Another fat one...

It looks good from ever angle except the front. It looks like someone has been filing away at the nose cone!

 I hope to god that bump makes a difference aside from being ugly. :yuck:

Is there some engineer here ?

I wonder how that kind of nose could be better aerodynamicaly speaking than the one seen on the Mclaren ? Doesnt really makes sens to me, anyone care to explain ?

Actually I'd say the rear is tighter this year and only the bludge from the new pipe position makes it look fat. However...this isn't about the McLaren F1 car and there are a couple threads to talk about it.

Same goes to McLaren. I thought that was their diffuser then I was like ...

Owkey that surely is dummy. And I think it makes sense to why they hide it for the launch.

Exactly it makes sense, but it's still funny.

the nose is the result of new safety rig that forces a certain side profile.

How Mclaren's design conforms to it is unknown because visually it doesn't seem to be.

this is the rule concerned: http://www.formula1.com/news/technical/2012/0/929.html

You'll need a computational fluid dynamicist mate.

^ This ask me this question two years from now when I get further in my Aerospace Engineering degree.

But we'll know the championship results in 2 years!

I think the stepped nose will be king, Red Bull have been doing it for a few years now and its worked for them.

What are you talking about ? The red bull nose looks nowhere near this.

The red bull nose looks stunning, the ferrari/catheram/Force India looks like **** lol .

Well, Ferrari have been accused of being too conventional these past few years. If this car wins from the get go, I'll say those accusers were right :D

lol well for the moment out of 4 team we saw, 3 are using the same nose, only mclaren is not, so for the moment ferrari is conventional, even if it's not compare to last year design.

I'm sceptical about it's looks but I think it will be very fast. But then again I thought that about last years Mercedes, and that didn't get a single podium IIRC.

Actually, sceptical is too soft a word, that car is very, very ugly.

Diffusers don't exist on release day

Makes sense, given the exhaust. We are likely to see a diffuser that aligns very closely with the brake ducts. Either those ducts will be part of a virtual ultra wide diffuser, or will point the exhaust back at it.

Because esthetics doesn't equals speed.
I find it very strange how aesthetics suddenly don't mean anything when Ferrari produces an ugly car. I can't think of the last truly ugly car that won a race, so I don't have much in the way of hope for the Ferrari combine harvester.

The only thing that makes the car ugly is the new nosecone. But that's just how teams developed it according to the new regulations. I can't see what's wrong with it otherwise; it's a very aggressive car, and it shows its goals immediately by its presentation: to be back in the battle for the titles.

We were having similar discussions when the wings changed to their current criteria. Give it 3 races and it will seem like they have always been like that.
Hopefully this Ferrari is a match for Red Bull, and the same for Mclaren and Mercedes-Benz.

No, it's not. It's got a McLaren double-airbox, Red Bull sculpting at the rear and tiny in-vogue airboxes. Once again, Ferrari have just taken the best ideas from the year before and grafted them together.

Name a team that isn't guilty of that same thing.
Oh, they'll all take what they know to work - but at the same time, they'll add their own ideas in. Like Force India's ultra-thin nose. Or McLaren's "snow plough" under the nosecone. Ferrari, on the other hand, just copy and paste.

Maybe, but now, pretty much every car will have an ugly stepped nose. If looks means results, then McLaren will win the championship this year.

car has been ugly since 98 when track width has decreased.
