FIA freezes engine development for 10 years

24 October 2007

The FIA has announced that all F1 engine development will be frozen for ten years from 2008 onwards. The announcement came after a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council today in Paris and will likely not go down well with a number of manufacturers who were fighting against such a lengthy freeze.

"There will be a total freeze on engine development for a period of 10 years, starting from 2008," a brief FIA statement read.

"A change can be made after five years but only with the unanimous agreement of all stakeholders and following a further two-year notice period," it added. "Total freeze means that there will be no exceptions for development of certain parts of the engine, as is the case under the current regulations."

Manufacturers against such an engine development freeze proposed limited changes be allowed in order to help promote more environmentally-friendly technology.

Oh dear. :(

Er. bugger.

Nice one bernie / max.

Why do that? honestly, this means there is going to be not a lot of pace change in the future.

I suppose it will put more emphasis on Aerodynamics and drivetrain.

LAME.

So that means whoever has a weaker engine at the end of 2008 is fooked. On the plus side there will probably be huge developments on engines next year...

I hope the entire world just boycotts F1. Seriously.

Sniff sniff.

What's that? Smells like Nascar.

No, that would be FIA freezes engine development for 40 years

Seriously, how can F1 be considered the technical pinnacle of motorsport with engines that are technically a decade out of date?

Danny you are correct, a huge emphasis will be put onto aerodynamics, drivetrain and the like.

Just when the 2007 season makes F1 exciting to watch again, along come the FIA and kill it in one stupid swoop!

But how will a new engine builder wants to come in F1?

I was thinking the same.

Let's imagine that Porsche (Chevrolet, Peugeot, whatever) wanted to enter F1 in 2015 ... Would the FIA tell them "alright, you can make your own engine, but we have to be sure that it is technically no more advanced than it would be possible in 2008!"

 This is a joke, right? c'mon guys, own up.

Unless Bernie has recently invested huge sums in a competitive / alternative formula. No, wait - hasn't Ferrari just signed a deal to supply A1GP with engines and consultancy for 5 years? That would leave them less room to develop their F1 engines, so this freeze must be a wonderful coincidence to them, especially as it guarantees them one of the most powerful and reliable engines on the grid for the next five years, with no work to do on it but make replacement parts.

Hang about, doesn't Ferrari have, like, 40% of the seats on the FIA board or something? :odd:

Sshhhhhh....McLaren Merc might be watching..

I would think that engine development would be the same, if not less expensive than aero development, so how does this save costs? What's next, spec engines?! You know what comes next...

"I am supporting Honda this year because they have the most advanced throttle pedal this year"

"I think McLaren will win, its has the prettiest colors"

Bah!

?

This is basicly the same thing that happened after 2006, only difference is that it will be longer and stricter, and what did we get out of it? Possibly the greatest championship season of all time.

So I think it's safe to say that the only people who care about engine development are the engineers who will be out of work.

Too late for me Danoff. I listened to the final race on 5live. Don't think I saw a single complete race this year.

Saw enough to see Lewis Hamilton is talented.

Heard enough to realise F1 is now truly a Machiavellan farce.

Why, oh why didn't I tell Bernie he was a c..k when I saw him at Selfridges fish counter last year. Why?

Now F1 is a farce. First, the Benetton B191, then the curbs on innovation, messing up the fight of Lewis Hamilton vs. Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen AS WELL AS MONACO'S LAYOUT, Jacques Villeneuve staying in the sport for FAR TOO LONG, the "Eco-friendly formula of 2011", now contradicted by THIS?!? When was the last race where F1 made sense? 1986?!? And it was only briefly revived by Kimi Raikkonen winning his first title, but that was even screwed over when McLaren-Mercedes threatened to penalize BMW-Sauber and Williams!

The people that made this decision should be shot.

So much for being the most technologically advanced form of racing.

10 years, wow.

It's actually a really good note to go out on. Exciting finish to the season with Kimi and Ferrari taking it at the last second. Couldn't get a whole lot better.

I can live with that being my last season.

Well i guess this cost cutting is getting out of hand then lol

And yet it will have no impact on costs anyway. Teams will spend every cent they have, and it just so happens that F1 is a very lucrative business at the moment and it is worth spending half a billion dollars to be competitive.

As soon as the big manufacturers decide F1 is no longer worth it they will pull out, sell their teams for what little they can get for them, and budgets will plummet.

This rule change just makes it harder for manufacturers to show off their technical prowess in a competitive environment. Thus making F1 less appealing from a manufacturer’s standpoint. Not to mention for the fans – and you know what happens without them…

The buggers in charge of F1 these days, really test my patience. I like to think as F1 as the, pinnicle of enginerring, now it seems that in 9 years time we will be saying, F1 used to be the pinnicle of enginering. Its hard to convey with words how dissapointed I am. Myabe I should send a few e-mails.

Anybody else up for some e-mails?

Why not just make everyone use the same engine while they're at it.

I think it would be pretty nice to see some of the manufacturers come back to the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Like Sir Jackie says, change needs to happen at the top, I'll still watch and support the sport...but Mosley needs to hop it and a capable and competent replacement found...fast

Pretty soon they will be banning tire development...

I can't wait to see a Ferrari on stone wheels....

Isn't F1 supposed to move motorsports forward?

Hopefully Max will take Bernie with him
