So you drove them and disliked them? That's fair enough but you've not mentioned anything about driving them, looks are subjective and I agree they arn't the prettiest small cars around but to me that has nothing to do with driving them. I've not drivien the new Fiesta and I really don't intend to either but I would be interested to hear what they are like. My next car is most likely to be a second hand Lexus IS or a newer Focus.
My mistake, I did not mention the driving experience. First, let me explain I haven't driven a manual 1.6L which will have severely marred my impression of the car. So next, let me say that a 1.4L 4spd auto at full throttle is slower than a base model Falcon at 1/4 throttle, or it feels slower anyway.

I mean you can literally put your foot right down in traffic and nobody will probably even notice you're gunning it. In one scenario I almost lost an uphill drag to a truck at 100km/hr on the highway.

I also don't like the general shape of the interior, the way they've put bulges in the centre stack and steering wheel.....I don't know.......almost makes me feel like the car is trying to help the driver compensate for something. That's not to mention the rediculously long dash in what ever horrible colour it's in today either. The interior controls (i.e. centre console, power mirrors etc), in an effort to look modern and cool, are all over the shop and difficult to use when you're driving. A big thing I realised immediately when driving it too was it had electric steering (I didn't know before driving it then confirming it on the parts catalogue back at work), the steering is light as a feather, like REALLY light, lightest I've ever had, power assisted or not. I now know just how valuable well weighted steering is in a car. The auto, in manual mode, is barely manual at all, the car does not understand "short shifting" through corners. Going through a corner at 50km/hr in 2nd gear, put your foot down and it decides to shift back to first (this is in manual mode remember), and you're almost instantly redlining needing to change back to 2nd, not to mention the massive change in weight distribution the tyres just experienced. Falcon autos don't do this. (I'd buy a manual in any car anyway, but that's not the point). I'm sure there's other things I'm forgetting about it right now too, but they're probably small things, like the boot space. (Get it? Small?)
Edit: PS- Go the IS, get a recent one if you can with the DI 3.5L V6, that's a nice car IMHO.
Edit 2: Although I have driven WP/WQ 1.6L manuals, the shifter feels like plastic, and overall it's still a pretty sorry car IMO.
