Fifth time's the charm for VW Roadster concepts?

Depends, really. I think you're going to find people opting for the VW versus the Mazda based solely on the diesel powerplant and the overall "refined" nature of the car. Nothing against the Mazda, I'd probably end up choosing it by days end as well, but we all know how crazy Volkswagen fans are (myself included).

Just a hunch here, but the VW is likely to become even more of a "hairdresser's car" than the Mazda has got the reputation of, simply because of the people who buy VWs just for the badge. I doubt anybody buys an MX-5 because it's a Mazda, but I expect people will buy the BlueSport because it's a VW.

But certainly the diesel thing will be popular, I think. But in the UK, the BlueSport will be a good £6k more than the base MX-5 so buying the VW because it's a diesel would be nonsensical - £6k would get you years and years of (cheaper) petrol before the VW's economy advantage would finally come into effect. So people will really have to want the VW for it to be a success over here. Doubtless it will, because the UK has a very high proportion of badge snobs.

But I may have jumped to conclusions as I expected this to be some overweight hairdressers car. Ill wait and see then.

But a diesel for a 'pure' sportcar is never a good place to start. Diesels are great for commuter cars, but when you are alone on a road through a mountain pass, a rev happy I4 makes so much more sense for obvious reason.

It's a good job that its expected to have a petrol version too then isn't it. ;)

By that logic, any 60s British sports car looks like any other British sports car. Or any Italian car from the 60s/70s looks the same too. Just because the dashboards look very similar ;)

I assumed my idea was a very obvious one, and that I didn't need to specify that only the dashboard looks like GT. Otherwise, it just looks like a typical VAG Mid-engine shape, which is naturally a beautiful thing.
 
Oh, so you like it? I just got the impression that your comment was derogatory. Not that any comparison with the GT is really a bad thing, but it just seemed odd. Anyway, I see your point now 👍
 
Eh? If it looks like anything it's an Audi R8. Just take a look at the wheel arches and the waistline running between them. In fact, the shape in general.

It totally looks Audi. They make both brands and hardly try to make them look different to each other.

Citing inside sources, German car magazine 'Auto Motor und Sport' is reporting that the VW Group is planning to introduce SEAT and Skoda variants of its forthcoming mid-engine roadster that will be based on the BlueSport concept unveiled at this year's Detroit Auto Show. Due to arrive sometime in 2012, VW's edition of the roadster will most likely be offered with the firm's TSI / TFSI gasoline and TDI diesel engines.

While a SEAT variant of the mid-engine roadster sounds logical given that the Spanish brand is supposed to be somewhat sporty (as long as it comes with a unique styling and a lower price tag than the VW's proposal), a Skoda version doesn't really make much sense in our opinion.

The Czech automaker has made a name for itself as a producer of reasonably priced family cars and we can't see how a two-seater roadster fits into this image. Unless VW has other plans for Skoda, producing a third variant (maybe even forth if Audi gets its own version) will only confuse the Group's buyers and most probably, lure away customers from SEAT.

Now, I like Skodas, but as the article mentions, I can't really see a market for a sports car, unless it's put at such a low price point as to open up the sports car market to entirely new buyers - or maybe an opportunity for VAG to offer a car more closely price-matched to the MX5, given that the BlueSport will cost a good £6k more than the Mazda.

SEAT on the other hand need something like this - they claim to be a sporty brand but their range is made up of hot hatches driven by chavs and they need a proper sports car to make the range truly sports-orientated.

For some reasons, Volkswagen's intends to construct a two-seater, turbodiesel sports car have been announced and retracted so many times fans are dizzy. It seems that those plans might finally be left behind altogether. The car, which first showed up at the Detroit auto show in 2009, does not project the kind of sales the company feels it needs to be able to warrant production.
