Sony, you really shouldn't have let this happen. A lot of people were going to get PS3s specifically for Final Fantasy XIII. Now they don't have to, as it's coming to the Xbox 360.

Well, its not the end of the world, but nevertheless a surprising move on behalf of SquareEnix. Generally speaking, none of the games they showed at the press conference appeal to me, but certainly, they're going to bring some new users into the fold.

Final Fantasy isn't a Sony game. Square Enix may do what they wish with Final Fantasy. I'm not sure if I understand why Square Enix did make this move. It certainly won't help 360 sales in Japan. I wonder how much Yen was involved here...

Anyone want to guess how many DVD discs will FFXIII fill on the 360?

It doesnt matter to me at all which game goes to which console. The word "Exclusive" means nothing to me. Honestly I just dont see why anyone would care if a game was on other consoles. Makes no sense to me. If a game is good why not let everyone enjoy it instead of just a certain console.

I know FF isn't a Sony game. But Sony should've done a better job persuading Square-Enix to keep it a PS3 exclusive. Final Fantasy could've been a system seller for the PS3.

I personally don't care that the game is coming to the 360. The more people that get to enjoy it, the better. I'm just saying it's quite a loss for Sony.

I don't think Sony cares, they just don't push for exclusives nor should a person ever buy a system for one game. It may sell worse than The other 2 major 360 jrpgs that did not do to well sales and reviews wise. It may do worse because it's still on the PS3 and may require multi discs like the other 360 rpgs.

And FF13 wasn't going to be a major system seller out side of japan. This generation of console is too heavy on action and shooter games not rpgs. Only strong marketing will produce strong sales out side of Japan.

Agreed. That is why FFXIII is still exclusive to the PS3 in Japan. The 360 is a complete failure in Japan, no matter how much money Microsoft bribes Japanese publishers with. Throwing money to have exclusive titles is not a good business. Microsoft has already proven that.

Quite right. The 360 performance in Japan has been abysmal, at best. As I recall, they were banking on Blue Dragon and some other RPG title to bring the people in, and in the end, their plans fell flat on their face. I'm still under the assumption that in Japan, people just don't care... Not because the games or bad or because its from an American company... They just don't feel the need to latch onto yet another gaming platform when most of the games are already readily available on the PS3.

As I recall the 360 has fared a bit better in Europe (still nothing compared to North America), but even that's on the slide...

IMO, strong titles are a critically important part of the puzzle to make console sales possible. The problem is, Microsoft really has been lacking in that department for the last year or so.

Special camera angle at the request of Microsoft... blocking out full-on images of Final Fantasy XIII. What kind of f:censored:ed up s:censored: is that? That's Microsoft for you... Like all people care about is HALO and Gears of War. I was even looking at the TV shouting (to myself) show a damned close-up or a full screen. But apparentely (and it isn't like the game has any X-Rated material), the fools at Microsoft wanted to pull this away.

All I can say is... enjoy. The longest-running and most amazing RPG series of all time is coming your way. Should be a hit on XBOX Live. That is... unless Fable II has something to say about it in the RPG realm...

It doesn't seem like people in Japan like shooters much though they did buy MGS4, but that's not exactly a shooter. JRPGs seem to be the favorite genre. I wonder what else sells well. But it makes sense since the PSX and PS2 were both pretty much a home for JRPGs.

If I remember correctly, the Japanese dislike western style shooters because there isn't a reason presented for why you are in the act of killing. In most shooters, whoever happens to cross your reticle, you kill. The Japanese deem it better if there is consequence for when you kill or not to kill at all. This is why Metal Gear Solid, which encourages you not to kill, does better in Japan than a game like Halo or Killzone.

.

It will shift more units than Mistwalker's games and Eternal Sonata on hype alone. It's gonna sting for Sony because all the people in western regions who were waiting for FFXIII before buying a next-gen console now have an easier decision to make. £159.99 for a 360 arcade pack? Or £299.99 for a 40gb. I know the ps3 offers greater all round value for money, but for people who just want the latest FF, its no contest.

Multi-disc isn't an issue with RPGs, I doubt its gonna be a selling point that the ps3 version is on 1 blu-ray disc.

Its just silly to buy a system for one game.

Agreed. But there are lots of people who either bought their PS3 mostly or entirely for FFXIII, or were planning to buy one for FFXIII.

Yes, but those people are still silly. They cannot think of one other reason why their PS3 is useful? I think those people are too busy worrying about writing a new slash fiction about FFXIII in their mother's basement.

This move is identical to when Microsoft bribed Paramount $50,000,000 to dump the winning blu-ray format and go HD-DVD exclusive. A few months later HD-DVD ended up losing anyway.

Hopefully history repeats itself.

In this case Square told Microsoft that they would have to pay for the entire development of both the PS3 and 360 version of FFXIII. They intially refused but somehow they struck a deal. Hopefully FFXIII doesn't sell well on the 360.

And why do I want the game exclusive to one console? So the developers can get the most of one single console and release the game quicker instead of having to worry about a port.

But its really too late for that. Square has created a new physics engine called crystal tools that is multiplatform and works with PC, PS3 and 360.

Only vs XIII is using the superior, PS3 exclusive white engine. It may be the last game to do so.

As long as there is different consoles, top games need to stay exclusive to drive hardware sales and for the game developers to be able to get the most out of the particular system.

What'd be funny though is what if after completing the PS3 version, they had such a difficult/costly time porting it over to 360 that they canceled it?

Great news no doubt. I will have it for sure...now the "hard" thing is to choose, PS3 or XBOX 360?? In which system the game will be better???

I don't think Microsoft would like that after paying them off.

However I don't think Microsoft would mind if they ported a trashy/buggy version of the game to the 360.

I would imagine the PS3 since they are making it for the PS3 first. They could possibly rush 360 version. I will probably go for the PS3 version just for the slight convenience of one disc. But if the reviews say that the 360 version is way better, I will get it for 360.

In an interview it was stated that the 360 version will go into full swing after the ps3 version is completed. Which means 360 owners will be waiting a very long time for the game.

Especially ignoring the entire 360 and PS3 library just for a JRPG.

One of these days Microsoft higher ups will stop such shenanigans. Until then Microsoft will continue to flush money down the toilet in efforts to try and one up Sony (like the GTA 4 exclusive content deal).

Not just 360 owners

I had read the 360 version will be released day and date with the PS3 version. I think it was CVG. If so then it would suggest SquareEnix had planned this from the start, or at least have no problem working on both simultaneously.
link Though it's Microsoft that says this.
It may be the cost of making the game kinda' necessitates going multi-platform, and as a business option it's fairly sound; they will sell more copies.
I do think Sony should have kept it on their console only. But it could be the age of exclusives is over, though Microsoft still manage to have them and crow about them most vocally.
Thing is I know of a few people who were waiting for FFXIII on the PS3. They may not wait now.

was this deal even worth it if you cant sell FFXIII in japan? American xbox consumers doesn't play JRPGs for the most part

how much money did M$ bribe square with anyways?
