Anybody?

Short-lived US TV series which, somehow despite being cancelled 3 years earlier after just eleven shows, made it onto the big-screen as "Serenity".

Just started to watch the series - seems very Whedonesque (carrying a few actors over too), which isn't necessarily bad (though he rarely translates into cinema), and a little light on letting us into the background story and language, but it's not bad so far.

*crickets chirping*

I vaguely remember adverts for it, but never watched it. People on TV.com give it 9.3/10, but it couldn't have been that good if it got cancelled after one season. You have to understand: Fox absolutely bombards us with tons of crappy new shows every season. It's hard to muster the courage to actually sit down and watch them to see if any of them are good. Unfortunately, for every "Prison Break" and "Arrested Development", there are 10 shows like "Who Wants to Swap Their Husband for a Prisoner?" and "So You Think You Can Fly an Airplane?".

"Threshold" got cancelled 4 shows short of its season finale (which Sky, as co-producers, funded the filming of, so we got to see it). And THAT was pretty good...

Firefly seems to be Bonanza in space with a hint of Star Trek, as seen from the PoV of the Maquis...

Never saw the TV series, But I have serenity on DVD and loved it, and if the TV series is anything like the Film (and im sure its better) I would like it. I also have great sympathy for those who love such shows and then have them canceled by fools in the industry, becasue my beloved Farscape got the axe, I guess it had a better run than FF tho.

That's because you don't know the real story. :)

Fox's official statement regarding the cancellation was that the show didn't meet the expected ratings, therefore it was dropped.

What they don't tell you is that they intentionally destroyed it. Originally, they liked the idea.. cowboys in space kinda thing. But when Joss showed them the pilot episode, they were sadly disappointed. Not because it was a bad show, but because they thought it was "boring". It was more like Star Trek in that it was mostly character-oriented and put very little emphasis on action and adventure. Basically, not enough explosions and not enough sex to be a proper Fox television show. They declared it dead before it ever aired.

Firstly, they refused to allow Joss to show the actual pilot episode, choosing to start with the second episode. Gone was all of the exposition, leaving a lot of viewers wondering who these people were and what was going on. It made it very difficult to get into. It's like picking up a book and skipping the first half.

Secondly, they made it very difficult to people to actually watch it. They constantly shifted it's timeslot.. this week on Wednesday, next week on Friday, then move it to 9 o'clock, etc. They also pre-empted it every chance they got. They were more than happy to sacrifice Firefly to show the almighty "MOVIE OF THE WEEK", which was usually something incredibly stupid that probably got lower ratings than Firefly did.

Then they had the audacity to come out and say that the show didn't get good ratings. And cancelled it after only half a season.

They hated it so much, in fact, that even though they had cancelled it, they refused to sell the television rights, so no other network could pick it up (although several wanted to, including Sci-Fi and the WB). They killed it, swept it under the rug, then rolled up the rug and threw it into a bog. Then they set the bog on fire.

Eventually, mostly due to fan pressure, they released the complete series on DVD. The stupidity of their cancellation was evident in the tremendous DVD sales, and Firefly remains a top-seller to this day, constantly finding new fans.

Fox is also indirectly responsible for Serenity's box office failure. Because the show was only on for a short time, very few people were exposed to it, thus seriously shrinking the available audience for Serenity. The only people who went to see it were fans of the show. Casual moviegoers ignored it, based on the idea (probably started by Fox) that it was a movie based on a cancelled TV show.. "So how good can it be?", just like you said. None of which have ever actually seen the show.

I've seen hundreds of people on various forums fall in love with Firefly after it was gone. Of all the people who have bought or rented the DVDs, I think I've seen only one who didn't like it. Everyone else becomes a fan after watching only the pilot episode, and curses Fox for it's stupidity.

Although, in a way, it may be better this way. Because of Fox's treatment, and the negativity thrown at them constantly because of it, the show actually ended up far more popular than it would have been had it continued to air. The show would have trudged along for a few years, eventually fading into obscurity. But now, because it was cancelled in the way it was, it's become a cult phenomenon.

Nice to see you're becoming "one of us", Famine. :)

Those two statements add up. Cowboys in space doesn't interest me in the least, nor would it interest most people. Even if the show is the best thing to ever hit TV, if it doesn't interest the target demographic, it's not going to be successful. Low ratings are the result. Same thing happened to Futurama and Family Guy (at first). Great shows, both cancelled due to lack of mass appeal. 'The OC' however, appeals to everyone....who is between the ages of 12 and 16, and female.

However, I agree whole-heartedly that Fox sabotages these shows in order to get them off the air. This is typically what happens:
Step 1: "See [new show] at 8:30/7:30c, Thursday on Fox!"
Step 2: "See [new show] at its new time, 8/7c, Thursday on Fox!"
Step 3: "See [new show] on its new night, 8/7c, Wednesday on Fox!"
Step 4: "See 'True Lies', starring Arnold Schwartzenegger at 8/7c, Wednesday on Fox, but don't forget to catch [new show] in three weeks, on its new night and time, 7/6c, Monday, on Fox!"
Step 5 (three weeks later): "Tonight, Animation Domination on Fox! Five straight hours of 'The Simpsons', starting NOW!"
Step 6: Concerned letter to Fox: "What happened to [new show]?"
Response from Fox: "We never had a show called [new show]. Thank you for your interest, and don't forget to check out our new show, 'This is a Steaming Pile of ****', 8:30/7:30c, Thursdays on Fox!"

Bought the DVD box set a while ago, really enjoyed it. Silly, fun and well, just good. The film is very good though if you ask me.

I haven't actually ever watched an episode of Firefly, but between what people have said in this thread and what I've heard from a couple other people, I may have to check it out.

Nicely said, Jedi. 👍

I am one of the original Firefliers from when it was on Fox. Then when Sci-Fi started airing it IN ORDER, as opposed to Fox's complete mish-mash, I watched it again to refresh me before the movie came out.

As it's kind of hard to seperate Firefly from Serenity, here is the Serenity thread.

Star Wars is nothing but a giagantic western in space and that certainly seemed to be enjoyed by a fair few people. Not sure why you think nobody would like that concept.

I'm a massive SciFi fan and I didn't even know this show existed until it was repeated on the SciFi channel last year before 'Serenity' hit theaters. I think that shows very nicely how Fox killed the show.

Instantly fell in ove with it and loved 'Serenity'.

Jedi2016 that was a perfect write up of how the show was killed but Joss Whealdon has to take some blame for the failure of 'Serenity' at the box office. He allowed dozens of advance screenings of the film for fans months before its release which had a real impact on its opening weekend figures and hence seems to have killed any chance of a sequel :(

Sorry Kylehnat I messed up the quotes on that last post and didn't credit you with the original post.

You're forgetting to account for the fact that many nerds went and saw it 20 times, thus inflating ticket sales :). (Side note/tangent/rant: "nerds" isn't really the word I want there, but I can't think of anything better. I'm a big nerd, but I don't like sci-fi stuff that much, if at all. And why is there this stigma that all nerds love Star Wars and Star Trek? I don't particularily care for either, yet I still get stereotyped. I tell ya, I'm being kept down by The Man and his cronies.)

Perhaps the premise is intriguing to some, maybe even many, people. Now carefully think about Fox's main audience. Are the people who watch "Celebrity Boxing", "Nanny 911", "Trading Spouses", "Stacked", "The OC", "Hell's Kitchen", and "American Idol" the same people who will be interested in a non-descript sci-fi show? Likewise, if you debut "Madame Merriwether's Hour of Tea" on SPEED, are you going to get big ratings? Only if Madame Merriwether is wearing a black teddy and rolling around on the hood of a Camaro.

What he said.

My parents picked up the DVD set after renting the movie, and after watching a few episodes I was hooked. It's well-written and just damn funny. I'm normally not even a sci-fi person.

I'm trying to space out the episodes since there's only one season to watch.

I can't work out why Whedon's speech ideosyncracies work on the box, but not the silverscreen...

Is it just me, or is the "Galactic Language" actually Mandarin?

Dude - one of the lead characters is an extremely pleasant hooker...

It is indeed Mandarin. With CC on the TV, it just says [speaks Mandarin] or something to that effect.

And no, there's nothing wrong with Inara. :sly:

It's appalling what Fox did to it. I'm still pissed that it never came to this side of the pond... (me being across the great greasy green Pacific)... weird that they'd axe it that way, seeing as how successful Joss's other projects were. :ouch:

Though I'm ashamed to admit it, I'm a Joss Whedon fan... I actually had a very low opinion of his work until, one bored night... I actually sat down to see a few episodes of "Buffy".

The snappy dialogue, the mix of drama, comedy, action and honest-to-god character development, and the complete and utter irreverence of his productions and the inexplicable ability to make B-movie worthy material actually good to watch... hey! This is like a live-action "adult" comic book!

I missed the movie (stupid work scheds) and I've never seen the series. It's on my list of "must-buy" DVDs, though.

Its the curse of the "F"
Family Guy
Futurama
Fastlane
Firefly
All made by Fox & cancelled when they shouldnt have been.

I got Firefly after i watched Serenity on DVD. Firefly has some of the funniest lines/scenes in anything ever. They really should make some more episodes or another film.
Reminds me a bit of Bones (last episode in England this week) in terms of the humour. Its not a comedy programme, but has some very funny lines within the episodes.

Does anyone find Kaly (dont know the spelling, shes played by Jewel) strangely attractive?? She's so sweet, i love her!!

I only ever saw one ad for Serenity but didn't catch it in the theater because it came and went so fast. By teh time I thought to figure out when it was out it was already off.

I saw an ad for Firefly on Sci-Fi one night but never thought to flip it on. It is hard for me to get into a new show. I do plan on renting and watching both the show and movie.

Does anyone find it odd that Fox treated this show like this when they are the network responsible for Briscoe County Jr. (that died quickly too) and X-Files? Neither of those sound like shows they would carry any more.

24 doesn't exactly fit into the mold of what those shows you mentioned, but gets a whole lot of viewers. So why couldn't a sci-fi show work?

I think they're too caught up in the 'genre game' in general - people will watch a show if it's good(i.e. well written), regardless of the genre.

Just finished watching all of Firefly & its easily one of the best programmes to have been on TV. Its certainly better than the current (2nd) series of Lost & Desperate Housewives.
There are so many stand out hilarious quick one liners in Firefly i sometimes think its funnier than most "comedies". and Kaylee is just lovely!

I'm just over half way through the series and it started off a little slow but watchable but I'm really getting into it now, the characters play off each other brilliantly. I definitely reccomend it to any sci-fi fans. Great humour and one liners, one of the best so far being after Mal beats that guy in the sword fight

Mal:Mercy is the mark of a great man.
[Stabs Atherton]
Mal: Guess I'm just a good man.
[Stabs him again]
Mal: Well, I'm all right.

And yes Kaylee is lovely.

I finished the first disc on Sunday and now I am waiting for the second disc to come in from Netflix.

If the second disc pans out as well as the first then I might just cancel the rentals and go buy it. I am really enjoying this show.

Thanks for the recommendation guys. 👍

Mal reminds me a lot of Han Solo (when he still shot first) in the way that he doesn't hesitate to eliminate the problems with his gun and seems to find an intial solution in tossing people out of airlocks but in the end always does the right thing, even if it puts himself at risk.

I was telling a friend about it and I described it as kind of like Briscoe County Jr in space and he said, "OK, you've sold me."

I really wish this show could make a comeback. I'm sorry I missed it the first time around.

Well, with [Events that happened in Serenity], they'd have to make quite a few changes for a second series...

I haven't seen Serenity yet, so I will have to wait and see what you mean. I was wanting to get Firefly in first.

Well, I'm not about to give anything away... Serenity does follow on from Firefly (though it can be viewed on its own with no prior reference), but for a second series of Firefly to continue on from Serenity, they'd have to change a few things around... Unless they ignore Serenity altogether, or have it as events between the original series and the film...

I think for a second series to work they'd have to ignore Serenity. A second series after Serenity might as well be a different show with the ammount of changes they'd need to make.

Not necessarily. They could still have parts of Book's unexplained past to explore, which they never really covered. They wouldn't be able to just blank out Summer though - she'd either have to be on board and thus a lot like K9 (cryptic Doctor Who reference so as not to give much away), though there's still some mileage for the "Two by two, hands of blue" men, or finish her storyline with Serenity because after all she is just a passenger on Firefly. You'd still have the bulk of the main characters and ship's crew to continue though.

(I'm trying to keep this as ambiguous as possible, so for anyone who hasn't seen Serenity, not an awful lot of this will make sense, but nor should it give anything away. I hope.)
