First DiRT, then GRID, now FUEL.

I still haven't got FUEL yet. Gave the demo another try and my estimation of the game has gone up a little. Handling aside it's actually pretty fun, and I'm sure the cars are probably better than the bike in the demo (is there any way to drive a car in the demo? I can't seem to find if there is). And I went on the map view and scrolled across out of the playable demo's area - my word it's massive. It just keeps on going. If I can pick FUEL up cheaply from anywhere I'd be quite tempted by it just for the massive environment.

There's a Buggy in the demo, you can do a time trial or freerun with it.

I don't think I'll be getting this game anytime soon, if I were to buy a racing game now it would be NFS Shift or DiRT 2.

I gave the demo a playthrough, and color me unimpressed. I probably would have liked it a bit more if the fascist shoulder-button throttle controls weren't forced on you; but the whole game, even in the actual races, came across as being a larger version of those areas in San Andreas that nothing happened in. Its like nothingness that doesn't seem to actually connect to anything.

The vista points show up on your map after you catch the truck for those.
I havent unlocked the last zone yet so NOTHING shows up at all. The entire section is greyed out. And I have about 37 more stars to go in the career races to unlock that zone. No thanks. I just want my vista points because personally i dont like the campaign at all. I got this game when it came out to free roam with friends. Now none of my friends play it.

Ah, ok. I actually finished the campaign mode, most people bash this game but I liked it. Unfortunately I never got to try it online because it was already dead when I got it.

I really enjoyed the game when it first came out, especialy getting 6-7 friends and go searching for vista points. Or to cruise around and find vehicle liveries. Loved it. But now that all my friends dont play, I just dont enjoy the campaign. Especially rubberband AI and sometimes they are just brutal hard and frustrating. So I will just get the vista points and be done.

I want to thank my friend again for the map because last night I finally found all the Vista points! It was still very difficult because even with the map, you still didnt have an indicator to show exactly where the vista poles were at. And with a map loaded with trees, some of these poles were VERY difficult to find.

Using the inbuilt GPS helps - though the game tended to lock-up after extended Free-Roam with GPS use, so only occasionally switching it on is best.

There are hardly any people playing it online now - I was on there this morning, just cruising around the top of the map. A few friends do meet up occasionally to do longer free-roam challenges, sometimes even races we've made in track-editor.

You can always catch up with any upcoming meetings we have planned on www.mygamepages.com :) Oh yeah, were mostly on PS3...

I just came back to playing FUEL again a few days ago, and upon reflection, the only things I really didn't like were the lack of manual shifting (you spend 30% of your time in this game stuck redlining in first until your gearbox wakes up) and repetitive soundtrack, other than that it was a blast.

...and that it's online was catered for by Gamespy...

We had a three and a half hour free roam the weekend before the servers got cut, started at the peak and didn't quite manage to hit the edge of the map.

I eventually completed this game 100% a couple years ago, but not the achievements because some require online multiplayer. It's really something special...it just couldn't quite pull everything together. It has a marvelous roadmap but lacks the driving mechanics to make rallying or cruising very satisfying. It has lifted trucks and all that terrain but only the steepest climbs are a challenge. It has apocalypse-styled vehicles but not much gameplay to attract people who are into that stuff, and lots of racing but relatively few "normal" vehicles.

Nevertheless, loading up a chill custom soundtrack (360) and aimlessly exploring is a great time. It was my go-to game for free roam driving until Forza Horizon came along. The last remaining career races were a bit of a mindless slog, but I'm happy to have checked every box.
