I typically start 4th on back, and there is always going to be a bottleneck at turn 1... I'll get out of the gas and coast for a "moment" prior hitting the brakes, that gives those directly behind an opportunity to realize it's time to slow up, then, I concentrate on not ruining someone else's race ahead of me. Typically, those behind will jump at the opportunity of me having coasted... I then attempt to get on the gas as early as possible to gain back the spots from those who jumped at the opportunity I gave them, as, they have usually overshot by a smidgen.
Sometimes I get the spot back right a way, but more importantly, I've not gone to last place fighting for "a" spot in the 1st turn.
