After more then two months out of work I am beginning to go a little crazy with nothing to do. :grumpy: (other then Job Stalking, obviously). With limited funds there isn’t many projects around the house that I could start, so what could I do to keep me mentally stable.

Many months ago I brought home some 3” rigid insulation from my previous employer and installed it in the remaining unfinished portion of my garage. The dogs and cars really appreciate the extra warmth in the Colorado winters. Fire code states that any walls adjacent to the rest of the living area are required to be drywalled so half the work is really already done. My plan was to finish it at some point and 💡 now is the time.

My ball got rolling when I saw a 5 gallon bucket of paint left from the previous owners of my house in the basement. Free paint! I can make this work. I will be updating with photos as I go along.

I am doing this on the cheap so let’s keep track…

Insulation…free
Joint tape, “mud” and screws left over from last basement remodel…free
Drywall…$6 per sheet X 8 = $48
Primer…5g = $35
Monster Energy drinks x 2…$4
Ceiling paint...5g = $68
Metal panels...$14.25 per sheet X 4 = $57
Flashing...$4.78 per stick X 3 = $14.34
Screws...$4.43
Shop light...$0

Total to date…$213.77

Day 1

Day 1 starts with getting things cleaned up and putting the tarp down.

These two photos shows my completed progress after day one. Nearly all the drywall is up.I attempted to put up the first two sheets on the ceiling but after way to many profanities I had to succumb to help. :ouch: I really thought I had a bracing system that would work. Next time I have to hang drywall on the ceiling I had the idea of construction adhesive to hold it up while I put a few screws in. It just might work….next time.

Day 2

Day 2 included getting the rest of the drywall up and getting all the joints taped. I also completed about 70% of the mud on the joints but didn’t get those pictures yet.

I have some fun things planned as I go along so stay tuned!

I insulated and drywalled my garage last summer and it made a huge difference. I'd strongly suggest that if you have any left over rigid insulation to put it on the garage door, too. All the insulation in the world in your walls and ceiling won't do much good with an 8'x16' cold spot.

Care to give us a hint on what's coming down the pipe? Workbench? New lights?

I probably do have enough ridged left over to insulate the door. I want to find out more about THIS stuff before I make the final decision. I will always have the top panel with the windows as an energy problem so all I can do is just try to minimize the heat loss.

My girlfriend came up with a rockin idea for a work bench today. At the moment my truck fits in the garage with only about 5 inches to spare so your typical bench isn’t going to happen. She has a Tahoe so we have about zero extra room when both trucks are tucked in.

I’ve been holding on to a two lamp florescent fixture forever and if I can pick up another couple I will have some nice lighting.

Day 3

Mudding and sanding done.

day342.jpg

Day 4

After a few choice words with my paint sprayer I now have 95% of the garage primed. I need more paint to finish the last 5%

Looking pretty good. Almost too good to park a car in there, I say turn it into your new man cave and make all the neighbours jealous. 👍

Also, thanks for reminding me that I have some painting to do around the house this weekend. 👎

I live in Colorado...there will always be room in the garage for my cars. I lost the love of scraping ice and snow off my windows many years back.

Please can you remove this thread, you've given Famine ideas...

Ohhh the LAN parties you guys could have in here when I am done! ;)

Nothing is better than going from an awful mess of a garage to a nice, organized, and clean one.

Why is it so . . . . . . empty??!??!!

It has to be to fit my Ram, Motorcycle and the Girlfriends Tahoe inside. The unfinished basement in my house has many things that should normally be in a garage

It wasn't really bad before, but after losing the 4 car garage mahal in the divorce a few years ago I just want to spurce things up a bit.

No, I'm just making an obvious statement, not referring to your house specifically. My uncle's was a disaster until we fixed it up to house his G8GT.

Day 5

Day five included the finish coat of white ceiling paint and the first taste of color. The two colors you will see are from left over paint when my house was built back in 2005. I added the second color on the front wall later in the day but did not take a picture.

Day 6

Day 6 was taken up mostly by cutting in the trim around the edges. I also installed my first bit of Bling in the corrugated metal panels.

Is that metal to guard against runaway Mustangs?

Aren't those metal panels going to blind you when you pull in at night?
Just curious.... I can't really tell what height they are at.
Looks really ******* good though! I wish I had a garage.....

No...I have a Ram

Never really thought of it, but lucky for me that I back into the Garage 90% of the time.

OMG, please clean your camera lens.

Garage looks great, though!

Great work Uno, looks excellent! My garage was carpeted and finished when we moved in this summer. I've had a couple LAN parties in it and its probably like 60% the size of yours there, you could have a REALLY nice lan party 👍

I shudder to imagine how many sweaty dudes would fit in my 3 stall, then.

The corrugated metal wouldn't have been my first choice, but it's certainly more fitting than typical wainscoting.

Come on, man. You don't remember that youtube video?

First I was like...whaaa...[/search]

Then I was like....DAYUM

Construction dust, really! It was driving me crazy also. Notice it only shows up when I tried to use the flash.

It will never actually see a LAN party, I'm just sayin ;)

Your real name isn't Larry Craig...is it? :odd: :scared:

It's a vision, I gotta have some kind of spice in there. I wouldn't have painted the walls that color either but it was free.

On with the DAY 7 update.

My one left over shop light goes in. I know it needs more but I need to sit on spending the money for more at the moment.

Here is the garage in the finished usable state. I still have things I want to do but with some impending snow this weekend I needed to get things cleaned up to get the trucks back inside. The rest of the to-do list….

  • Insulate the Garage door
  • Paint some graphics on the walls
  • Install four more shop lights
  • Fabricate a fold out work bench
  • Figure out what kind of shelving/storage units I need
  • Epoxy coat the floor

If you were an import guy you would invite all your friends over and have a graffiti party. That would be sweet. And then you'd park a sweet car by that sweet bike.

Looks good. 👍

You need some nudie posters and a tennis ball on a string to make it perfect though. Then maybe it will compare to these garages...

Prepare to drool and turn green from jealousy

I was hoping to find some of these instead of the old tennis ball trick.

And those are not Garages, they are show rooms.

If you were an import guy you would invite all your friends over and have a graffiti party. That would be sweet. And then you'd park a sweet car by that sweet bike.

The bike guys would just come over and fill the walls with racetrack banners. I will be mixing in something Yamaha like on the walls. And My sweet truck is all ready the best thing to put next to my sweet bike. :)

But you can't stand out in your garage and smack those around when you're bored. I feel like a cat whenever I'm at the mother in laws house smoking in the garage and playing with the tennis ball on a string, but its so addictive I can't help myself. :guilty:
