Ford is working on a top-secret new Focus RS, and is likely to choose next year’s London motor show for the car’s grand unveiling.

Buoyed by storming market demand for the Focus ST — which in its first year sold twice as well as its deadly rival, the VW Golf GTi in the UK — Ford believes it has created market space for a faster, edgier, 30 per cent more powerful Focus whose near-supercar performance and rally-car looks can both take advantage of last year’s win in the World Rally Championship and recall the heady days of the Escort RS Cosworth.

The new car, powered by a 280bhp turbocharged version of Ford’s five-cylinder engine, retains two-wheel drive but will use a special semi-active limited-slip diff to improve traction and on-limit handling. It has standard 19-inch wheels, special springs, dampers and anti-roll bars, and rides a little lower than the already-lowered Focus ST, which keeps its status as Ford’s bigger-selling, more versatile sporty saloon. Like the ST, the RS uses a six-speed stick-shift transmission. Total production is forecast at between 5000 and 10,000 units before the next Focus arrives.

Ford’s performance cars boss, Jost Capito, won’t confirm the car’s existence, on the grounds that it’s not yet in the company’s official plan, though he refuses to condemn the concept. “We are always pushing for cars like this,” he said, “but it is difficult because we have limited funds to spend on sporty cars. However, we would obviously like to build cars like this one.”

Designers want to avoid over-decorating the new RS, but the car is nevertheless believed to have a deeper front bumper with rally-style brake and turbo air scoops, plus a rear roof spoiler design influenced by the WRC cars. Flared wheel arches won’t be on the agenda as they were in the previous Focus RS; they’re deemed too expensive for such a low-volume model. Instead, the RS will use distinctive interior materials and badges to emphasise its special status.

It is perhaps a surprise that the new RS retains front-wheel drive when Ford has access to various Volvo and Land Rover 4x4 systems that might have been adapted. But retaining two-wheel drive saves money: Ford plans to have the RS on the market at the impressively low price of £21,000 to £23,000, only about £3500 ahead of the ST entry price. The project is believed to need around 18 months to complete, so production cars should be ready by June 2009.

I hate Ford (US). I'd gladly pay a larger premium for a higher quality and faster Focus.

omghax This thing is just brilliant. 280bhp? I just can't imagine how fast that thing is...

Small problem Ford (aside from the fact that it is completely ludicrous to market a 280BHP FWD hot hatch):

Granted, the Ford might have the soul that the Mazda lacked so infamously, but then we have another problem:
C30_1.jpg

O SNAP TIME PARADOX!
(I know that the C30 competes with the ST more than this proposed RS. I just wanted to use O SNAP TIME PARADOX in casual conversation).
Want to get away from PAG products? Okay...

Crap.
Well, it isn't like we have to worry about France anymore, I mean, the Clio sucks now, right?...

Well, um...there is always VAG to laugh at...

Damn!
Uh...BMW?

Can Ford at least stick it to GM?
Astra_OPC.jpg

I quit.

(Please note that the point of this was not to say that these cars are better than the proposed RS will be, but that the segment has gone from the upper level of hot hatches to the norm in the brief hiatus that the RS was missing. As such, the competition may be too much for the car.)

Focus whose near-supercar performance
two-wheel drive

Wow. Supercars now are a lot slower then I remember.

But seriously, I don't know if the chassis can handle the power, or capable of a bigger engine, but I think the top of the line Focus should be aiming for the R32, S3, with 4WD.

I'd take the Volvo, the Renault, the SEAT, and probably the Alfa on that above list before I'd spend my cash on this Focus.

Umm that's a Megane, not a Clio.

I think he was making the point that the Clio might not be much to worry about, at least in a straight line, but........Renault makes another hot hatch. And that hatch is fast.

Could be, mind the Clio is not the same segment as the Focus (the Clio is quite a bit smaller), so the Megane is a closer match.

It just threw me, mentioning the Clio, but picturing the Megane.

what?! still no 4WD, and yet putting 280bhp out? I say it'll understeer like VXR/OPC models.. fancy diff or not. if it just would have 4wd, it would go head to head with Impreza and Evo. forget R32 and such..

280HP+fwd?

Serioulsy, with a car of that (relatively low) mass, we're talkin' some serious dynamic problems. (Better than the Dodge, perhaps, thanks to better structure, but still a bad push...)

Umm that's a Megane, not a Clio.
As Keef touched upon, I meant that, while the Clio is no longer really the standard by which the others are measured, Renault will happily sell you another performance hatch that is very competent.

Ah right all is clear now. I would add that while the new 197 is a bit short on power its still right towards the top in terms of dynamics and I certainly would not bet against Renault continuing to improve on it as time goes on (after all they do have a habit of that).

I was thinking about the new SRT-4 as well. With 300 BHP through the front wheels, it does make you wonder when exactly this will all come to an end. I thought the "limit" was placed at a "reasonable" 260 BHP years ago, but that has certainly been blown to bits...

Next thing you know, GM will do some hyper-powered Astra for America and Europe based on the 2.0L DI-Turbo from the GMPD models, good for somewhere north of 300 BHP.

...That or they stick a V6 in it, whichever comes first...

Yet another go-fast Ford we won't get. I feel tampered with by Ford, Part XXII.

I've never thought anyone avoided a Mustang purchase because they could get a Focus RS or Sierra Cosworth instead. It's two different consumers, in my opinion.

Damn, I was looking forward to this thing. Now they make it FWD, and clever diff or not, that kills it for me. :grumpy:

Nice price, its main competitor in europe will probably be the Leon Cupra R(whenever that gets released).

The Focus will probably be more hardcore though, but what makes me laugh is that the current Audi S3's 265hp looks a bit measly compared to this upcoming RS, and seein as The next Cupra R leon will have about 260-280hp it makes you wonder why audi didnt just give the S3 300hp from the go, instead of offering it as a performance upgrade.

Probably becuse the S3 isn't meant to be as hardcore, it's not really a proper hot hatch and they arn't marketing it as one.

I think diff' technology has moved on far enough to make this a decent handler even at full whack. Sure, it won't handle like an FR, but it should still be good.

I look forward to seeing one about a week after launch :D

Ford is quickly marching away from being a Detroit company. They are screwing the US market and making pretty awesome cars for those across the pond. See ya blue oval!

Seeing as how the old RS was front wheel drive, I'm not that bothered by this development.

Or I wouldn't be, if they hadn't announced plans for a four-wheel drive version previously... :ouch:

Still, the new Focus is already ungodly heavy for a compact, so saving a little weight from having a less complex drivetrain is no bad thing. Too bad they didn't cut weight from the other end instead (leave the rear diff and take out the front one, man... transverse mounted, front engine, rear-wheel drive... would be a first, right? ).

What I'd like to know after they launch it, is if it'll have that front-heaviness the ST seems cursed with, or if they'll have dialled it out... although "cursed" might be too strong a word... the new Focus drives well enough despite the nose-led balance.

Hey, they could save even more money by delivering the RS without the 500 kilos or so of sound deadening the lower marks come with. Oh, okay, that might be exaggerating it a bit, too, but it sometimes feels that way when you're driving one... every time I get in a road-going Focus, I think: "Man, this'd be such a great car if it were only two hundred pounds lighter...". Every time I get in a race-prepped one, it feels just right.

:D It's a great idea, it would be really cool if someone had the balls to put it into production too...

Hmm....Kugel kit?

They are cool but from what I heard they would do horrendous on crash tests (due to the lack of crumple zones).

 Yeah, definitely not production, and the cost of the chassis modifications and drivetrain would make a limited edition RWD Focus with that engine pretty expensive... especially if they had to federalize it.

Still, the idea is so wonderful you have to wonder why nobody's tried to make a production car like this, yet... (BMW doesn't count... ).

I believe Ford Racing still sells their RWD-conversion kit for the MKI Focus. They built one not too long ago that used the 4.6L V8 from the Mustang Cobra, and my guess is that a conversion could be done for a fairly reasonable price with a more "moderate" engine and transmission combo.

FRPP is just reselling the Kugel kit, which allows Windsor (351/302/289) or 4.6 mounting points.

Damn... makes me wish they'd come out with one of those for the "Euro" Focus... or even for other sports compacts... I'm pretty certain I could get an AWD conversion for my car, but the rear diff probably isn't built to handle more than 200 hp (it comes with a naturally aspirated plant only).
