Wow, this is awesome...

Top Gear
Going retro is all the rage with car designers nowadays, so rather than waste millions developing new models, it's only logical that some cunning manufacturer would simply relaunch an old model.

That's exactly what VW has decided to do with the Citi Gold R-Line, which is effectively a Mk1 Golf GTi.

To be fair to VW, the Mk1 Golf has never been out of production because it's sold in South Africa as a budget car.

And it's South Africa that the Citi Golf R-Line is destined for, although as they use right-hand drive, it wouldn't take a lot of effort to bring one to the UK.

VW has updated the engine to a 1.8-litre with 121bhp for 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 115mph.

While the performance and exterior styling may be similar to the 1970s original, even if the Citi Golf only comes as a five-door, the interior is now more contemporary.

VW in South Africa has pinched the dash from a Skoda Fabia and bolted it into the Citi Golf and even supplies modern comforts such as an MP3 player connection.

However, while there's no power steering and air conditioning remains an option, at least the golf ball gear knob is still there.

If you fancy getting all misty eyed, the Citi Golf R-Line costs around £8,000 in South Africa, which is about what a Golf GTi cost in the early 1980s. How retro is that?

Thats just plain awesome. To be completely honest, I'd have a tough decision in taking this or the MKV Golf, as I quite like the older and notably lighter VWs. With the updated engine, suspension, transmission, interior, etc, I can't see many vehicles matching the performance-per-dollar with this car. Its a shame we can't buy them in the US, as this is just plain cool...

Man, why can't we get cars like that...although it would have been a lot cooler if they crammed the turbo 4-cylinder from the A5 GTI into that thing. :trouble:

No power steering or A/C in a place like South Africa...no thanks.

Odd though I'll be miserable in the car physically but I could listen to some sweet MP3 music

For the price of a new mkI, you could pick up a decent original one and put the other half of the price into the car and make it something more worthwhile, driving-wise. I still love the idea of producing the same car, over 20 years later.

That's pretty damn cool. I'd buy one. That interior is already 150% better than most of GM and Chrysler's products.

Because it would probably never pass our crash test standards unfortunately. I'm sure there's other reasons too like lack of a market for them(it would be very, very niche, and also have low profit margins I'm sure. Not a good combination for selling a car.)

Im sorry but that is horrific! Its a mk1 body which has been bastardised with mk2 golf front lights and from what i can tell modified mk2 "big bumpers" too. I like that about as much as i like Mk1 golfs with clipper kits on them.........and thats not alot!

Spec....

I really want one. Reminds of an Intergrale.

Next we'll be hearing about Peugeot bringing back the Rwd 504 from Kenya or Nigeria :p

Both sound awesome - cheap, old-school fun cars. Though, RHD means it won't see most of the world, including Israel. I'd love to get a new MkI Golf GTI for half the price of a Fiat Panda...

Two Words:

Nissan Tsuru.

Two more:

SR20 Swap.

...but I must admit, that there Golf has some appeal.

It reminds me a lot of my old Vee-Dub ('93 Fox 'Wolfsburg'), without power steering, cupholders, or A/C. It was awesome, and I truly miss that car...

Hey, even real men need power steering and a cupholder.

Posh... elbow out the window, beer can in one hand, and one hand and knee firmly on the wheel... that'll do.

Besides, plastic clip-on cupholders are retro-cool...

A twenty year old car without twenty year old car problems?

I think there are a whole lot of models from twenty years ago that if reproduced in a limited run today, would find a niche market.

Sorry, nope.

I'll admit that I'm spoiled by rather effective power steering, but the only driving-related thing I can't do while holding a cup is buckling/unbuckling my seat belt.

I'd be in that niche if I had a lot of money...too bad I can only afford cars that really are 20 years old. :dopey:

So, is this considered an authentic MKI/II/whatever? It seems that they have changed a few things, but it might not be enough to consider it "original."

It would be even cooler it it had a straight-up original MKI interior and exterior. Maybe drop a newer engine in there, and this would be an awesome car.

Agreed. The exterior needs black plastic trim around the bumpers and black side moldings, and that interior, besides just being horrendously cheap-looking (though understandably so), doesn't match the car.

And a third hand shifting?

Silly. You take your wheel-hand off the wheel to shift, and steer with your knees. C'mon, that's trucker-style... :D ...You can even change clothes while driving this way... :dopey:

I've never personally done that one, but I've seen it done... of course, it necessitates some sort of choke or cruise control so that you can lift off the pedals. Ah... to be young, stupid and relatively unkillable again...
