The Ford Sierra Cosworth RS500 Group A is a racing version of the Ford Sierra Cosworth that participated in the WTCC 1987. It was similar to the BMW M3 in that it was a racing car that had a road going equivalent, while other competitors were road cars turned into racing cars. In the beginning of 1987 the Sierra had just 340HP, was prone to mechanical failures and a mixture of other issues stopped them dominating the first half of the Season. However, in August 1987 the Sierra Cosworth was homologated with bigger turbos, and a new rear spoiler plus 440HP. The Sierra dominated the next 6 events however Shchnitzer BMW won the championship due to wheel arch irregularities causing the Works Fords to be disqualified in the James Hardie 1000 in Australia. The Sierra RS500 also claimed pole for the Bathurst 1000 5 times out of the 6 times Fords were entered, with a Nissan GT-R getting pole in 1991. The Sierra was Ford's only option as a rally car after Group B was abolished and, while the Sierra had plenty of power, it's RWD drivetrain let it down and was not as fast as the Lancia Delta. The only other option was the 4WD XR4x4 but it lacked the power of the Cosworth, producing only 200HP, 100 less than the Delta. The Sierra Cosworth only won 1 event, the 1988 32eme Tour de Corse. This lead to the production of the Sierra RS Cosworth 4X4 in 1990.
