Cars with foreign plates are still dodging fines worth millions

London councils have revealed that 300,000 penalties, totalling £30m, are left unpaid every year in the capital alone.

We highlighted the problem in Issue 853 (Inside Story), when our French Renault 5 escaped tickets for offences such as driving in bus lanes and parking on double yellow lines.

and if they aint paying those fines whats the chances of them having insurance?

This country is turning into a 🤬 hole because of labour. We need to follow the australians and americans example when it comes to immigration and people flouting our laws. :banghead:

^ We have laws against immigration, but the problem is that most of our neighbors to the south don't follow them, and we've managed to screw our neighbors to the north in the process.

...But hey, don't we Americans owe you guys a couple million dollars with the "congestion charge"?

This has far more to do with people from within the EU than true immigration, its a situation that exists because of the use of foreign cars being used on UK roads, the majority of which are from within the EU (so free travel, right to live, etc).

Its also a rather bold point to link it too a lack of insurance (particularly given the discussions on the merits of insurance fraud you have discussed in the past).

I don't think you will find that cracking down on immigration will have a huge effect on this at all. Better communication between police forces within the EU would have the desired effect. It has far more to do with the remote policing of our roads, a speed/light/congestion camera can't physically stop anything. As a totally passive device its useless at true traffic enforcement.

The current government and the UK's immigration policies for the last few decades have been a huge problem in many areas, but to try and pin £30m worth of unpaid fines on it is a bit too Daily Mail.

An excellent example of exactly the Point that Poverty has missed, almost no Embassy vehicle has paid a single penny in congestion charge since it was introduced.

The US embassy alone managed to rack up over £300,000 in CC fees in the first six months, compound that with the penalty charges and interest (not to mention that they still refuse to pay it), parking fees, etc. What you end up with is a far amount of the total bill (once you take into account all the embassies who refuse to pay on the ground that the congestion charge is a tax and embassy staff would then be exempt) is a fair amount of that total bill being from otherwise legal vehicles refusing to pay.
