Honda unveils real-life driving simulator
[May 23, 2001]
If you thought Sony's GT3 driving game was amazing, get a load of this. There is a must see if you're going to this year's Automobile Technology Exhibition: people and cars 2001 at the Pacifico Yokohama. On display until June 25 is Honda's latest hi-tech driving simulator which the company is using to instruct learner drivers.
While word of this new technology first hit the newspapers in mid-April, the simulator's formal launch will not be until June 18. Due to its hi-tech and hi-cost nature, Honda only have a couple of prototypes in existence in Japan so finding it on the site could be difficult. Fitted to Honda's Advanced Safety Vehicle (ASV) located outside the actual site proper, visitors must look carefully to experience its superb graphics.
Employing state of the art computer graphics which process 1,500,000 polygon per second and 30 to 60 frames per second, real-life driving motion is reproduced thanks to a 6-axis motion-base which mimics the actual feel of cornering and braking. One commentator said however that the Playstation GT3's force-feedback steering wheel mimics reality more closely.
Journalists who test drove the unit commented that its realism is second to none and that it feels just like a real car, and that when you collide with other vehicles, the impact and sound reproduction might be too real for people with weak hearts.
For those wanting to try the simulator, you will have to line up for tickets. Only six people per hour can be accommodated, so getting in the queue as soon as possible is highly recommended.
