^Erm, yes they can use the latest Ferrari's. They just license them off Ferrari.
No, you don't license registered F1 cars from the manufacturer, you license them from F1. Occasionally a team will have a test car that never got registered for competition and it creates a loophole like the BMW F1 car that popped up in few games in recent years. I don't know how long F1 holds each cars registration for, but I'd hazzard a guess that the Ferrari F2007 in GT5:P and GT PSP is an unregistered test car. If it's not, then the F1 would apparently not hold the licenses for very long.

The series seriously is missing out not using the early Grand Prix cars. Screw having the latest Ferrari's. What about the 50's, 60's and 70's cars? They would be far more interesting to drive.
Even the earlier era of aerodynamics from the 70s and 80s would be more interesting to drive. Some turbo-era cars are a must!

Having the Nurburgring but no Stirling Moss Lotus 18 to race around it is a big loss in my opinion.

Ditto. 👍

I also would like to drive the Auto Union C GP car and the Mercedes W125 around it. Or Maserati 250F. That would be epic. Imagine the online races.

Not too far back for me, but some of the 70's -90's F1 cars for me. From Gilles Villinuve, to Nikki Lauda, Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Damon Hill, Michael Schumacher and all the others.

In my opinion the only way you could get other F1 cars in the game is if they get individual licences from the contructors. The reason i think the Ferrari F2007 is in the game is because it's Ferrari's car and i think they can do what they want. They probably could put the F60 in. Having the F1 licence shouldn't preclude individual constructors from putting theircar in the game. Probably would be very expensive for Polyphony to do that.

I just want to get the chance to drive this thing around Monaco, it's a Lotus after all so who knows, maybe, just maybe..............

Well, TGS is standing next to us... Maybe KY says that all F1 cars from '07 and '08 are included in the game, but I don't give much hopes on it... maybe some cars from one year or some old classic, even if KY only put in such legend cars it would still be great.

Surely it would come under marketing purposes? As I understand it, the only thing the "F1 license" grants you is the ability to call your game and refer to all things in it as "Formula 1". It doesn't guarantee or make exclusive the drivers, teams and circuits involved. The cars would be registered copyrights of their respective constructors/teams, just the same as if a driver copyrights himself (e.g. Jacques Villenueve).
So with this in mind, PD could easily go to Scuderia Ferrari or WilliamsF1 and obtain the license to use their cars off of them. It would be more beneficial to sponsors for their logos to be featured in more than one game and I doubt they would have signed over such licenses to the FOM just for exclusive games. (but its entirely possible knowing Bernie)

Also, even if the F2007 thats featured was a test car, surely the license would include the name "F2007"? Wouldn't the test car look slightly different?

Nope, one of the conditions of registering a car and team into F1 is that you hand many of your licensing rights to Mr Ecclestone, these include your right to the cars amongst other things. Ferrari for example do not have the ability to single handedly license thier currently competing F1 cars to other companies for represtentation. It has to go through F1, unless ofcourse the car being licensed is a non registered car which would usually be a test car that had never been registered and thus never actually been used for F1 testing. Concerning cars from past seasons I'm not sure how far back you have to go before the cars licenses are no longer property of F1,.F1 don't hold the rights to a team and thier cars for ever, but I'm pretty sure it's for a couple of years at least.

And as far as I'm aware if you secure a full license to represent F1, F1 themselves grant you the permission to use all the cars, drivers, teams and tracks featured in the licensed season. I don't know any other series that has as much control over the licensing rights of entrants as F1 as, but it has that control.

Well, at the very least it would be nice to see pre-2000s cars. Even better pre-80s cars. 👍

Very true, I'd personally like to see a couple of the insane cars from the 80's along with a couple of the classic racers.

There was a similar issue not so long ago - I can't provide a link right now, but the core of the verdict/conclusion was the fact, that Bernie Ecclestone holds only the rights to "F1" logo, name etc., television and promotional rights etc. The main point was that even if someone unlicensed gathered a few Formula 1 race cars and raced them, it could've been called an F1 race, since it's just a fact, not a marketing issue. I'm not sure about the cars themself, but it'd be crazy if Bernie had more supervision over them than the teams. I'll trust you on that matter 'till I can find a reliable source stating something different.

Replace "supervision" with "control of rights" and that's exacltey what he has.

Dave A, just curious where did you get all this information from? I'm not doubting you i'd just like to read more about it myself

I like the before 2009 f1 cars, but not really interested in f1 races as such.

Yes, for me, old f1 cars would be a definatly buy reason! Damage, weather, night racing, wtf? All i want is to race cars :D

Just imagine these two beasts in gt5:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jfNqTwCQsA (Alain Prost, in an old Turbo Renault - it think its the car of the 82 Season)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xv8zzLVRF9g (Ayrton Sennas Mclaren from the Season 92 :D Ive never heared such an nice engine sound!)

Now, talking about the sounds, maybe its better for PD not to include old F1 cars. They will just blame these cars, if they dont get the engine sound right.
Just imagine an old V12 Ferrari F1 Car with the sound of the F2007!

An interview with Bernie Ecclestone, it was published a while back and although he didn't specifically go into details about games though they were mentioned, he did talk about F1 holding the right to license the cars and tracks. Tracks in a different sense to the cars though. F1 bascially has the right to license a track to anyone but the tracks are not exclusive to F1, so although he can license a track to someone under an F1 license that doesn't prevent the track owners or othe race series from doing the same. Bascialy he has rights over the tracks but not exclusive rights. The cars though are exclusive to F1, once a team registers a car to F1 the car almost becomes property of F1 in a non physical sense and as a result registered F1 cars beome exclusively tied into the F1 brand.

The situation may have changed since, but I'm pretty certain that F1 still hold the exclusive rights to representation of the cars entered.

as far as f1 goes im not really much of a fan, but i would like to drive around in some of the new f1 circuits. i mean if they could include monaco and suzuka circut, then i hope we get to see Silverstone, Spa francorchamps, magny cours, etc. Then again there is the power of DLC... :D

We could get anything with dlc in time assuming GT 5 is added to and GT 6 doesn't come out in a couple of year. Out of interest I wonder if the F1 cars will have damage. I wonder if the wheels and suspension would totally break and end your race just like real life.

It would be nice to have more Formula 1 cars (especially older ones!), because right now that F2007 is pretty lonely! :(

Just imagine an old V12 Ferrari F1 Car with the sound of the F2007!

Imagine if PD were able to reproduce this:

Best sounding F1 car of all time IMO. Ferrari V12 is legendary by its sound alone. Sadly I can't see this level of sound in videogames happening anytime soon whatsoever. Moving away from sound, imagine being able to drive this:

I doubt the GT5 F2007 is a test car, it has the arrow like wings on the nose, just like in real life, and the same livery, except for Marlboro.

Has there been any clarification yet as to what extent (if any) F1 cars will be in GT5?

The Ferrari in the prologue game is awesome.

Just a few card from the last few years and a sprinkling of classics would be absolutely awesome...
