Speaking of penalties, Carlos Sainz got slapped with a grid penalty for Qualifying infringment due to impeded Bottas during final minutes of Q1. Not a good day for the hometown man.
 
I can't say I'm a fan of the track - I don't see the point in making circuits like this... it's one thing to use existing streets in a place like Singapore or Monaco, but to purpose-build a track in what's basically scrub land/industrial estate with zero run-off areas for the majority of the track, just seems a little bit pointless. Also, the 'Monumental'... while it looks pretty spectacular, it also looks like it could deliver some monumental accidents as well - let's hope not...

Let's hope it somehow delivers an exciting race, but I won't be surprised if it's a snoozefest.
 
I imagine this will be a race where tire offset, strategy, some luck with red flag, safety car as well as how kind the cars and the drivers are with their tires will make the difference. I was looking at some of the onboards and I really can't see any good overtake spots on that track....at least it's not as narrow as Monaco 🙄. All the straights seems was too short. Coming out of la monumental, I think there might be an opportunity for some late breaking for those who dare but I think that might be tricky too especially if everyone is using one line and not wanting to be on the dirty side of the track.

Also, after watching the F3 highlights, I feel like this is going to be a complete mess tomorrow.

I said exactly the same thing to my wife as we watched, F3 and F2 are struggling to go side by side at times and having to dive into the run-offs, F1 cars are much bigger the the re-entry points are tight.

It's either going to be absolute carnage, or a complete procession, there will be no in between today.

Frankly, this shouldn't be possible - you can see why Max is wondering how a new F1 track can appear on the calendar without driver consultation.

Wonder if Max is going to try and go long with the softs to make it a 1 stop rather than 2 stops.

That was a lot of Safety Car close calls but still green into lap 7. All these kerfuffles has benefited Lando immensely.

Man that was a rough start down the entire grid sheesh

Don't know. maybe Russell's tire is made of super durable rubber, I guess.
 
Crapapinto has the entire field bottled up behind him running 5 sec a lap slower than the leaders.
