Despite living at Donington Park, I wasn't expecting to enjoy the racing, but it was really great! Looking forward to the next!
I enjoyed the race actually. I think it would be better if it wasn't a spec series though. The fan boost and minimum pitstop time need to go as well.
Spec series is only for this season. I agree with the fan boost thing, but minimum pitstop is for safety. I aid in Masters races and the amount of times drivers have gone out onto the track after a stop and a belt has popped out because it wasn't in properly is dumb. If anything, Nick's crash today proved that the belts are really needed in these cars, as with any. But the fan boost will always go to Senna and Legge as well as the home driver, Senna and Legge have the biggest social media following.

That is what unsafe release penalties are for. In endurance racing they don't have minimum driver change times.
But if they go out onto the track and a certain French guy doesn't like the look of them then they'll be killed!

In endurance racing pitstops are longer than 1 minute. They're usually 3 minutes. They've got enough time to take care.

I also do races with the CSCC and there isn't a minimum time for those, but when the pitstops took place this weekend I wasnt bored by waiting. They didnt seem to last too long anyway.

This series will be much better when the car can actually go a whole race distance, and they allow some innovation on the cars. The racing action itself was pretty good last night/this morning considering the not very creative street course design. It does have potential. However that penalty to the 2nd Audi ABT car is just as stupid as the fuel flow thing in LMP1-H and F1. -_-

Andretti Autosport finished 2nd and 4th (after penalty to Abt)! :D

I felt the car's sounded more impressive than one would expect, they seriously need to get rid of the cheesy dance music though because it's not needed (at least not on the TV feed anyway).

It was like watching an RC competition and at times it did look like they were scale models, that effect was kinda neat!

If it's going to be successful I think they need to find a way to up the speed, that would really up the tempo.

Can I just ask what happened to Drayson racing?

I mean I thought you couldn't prise Lord Drayson from this type of all electric series, especially come next year.

The series will eventually have its regulations opened up and move away from being a spec series.

The minimum pit stop time is a safety thing.

I like it, looking forward to the next race! Like the sound from the in-car, sounds like a fighter jet, not so keen on the outboard cam sounds. Track was boring, fan vote kind of gimmicky, but it will be interesting to watch it evolve and see how it all plays out. FOX as usual screwed up royally, I set the DVR since it was on at 2:00 am local, broadcast ran out after the first turn of the last lap! Had to catch all the excitement on youtube a few hours ago. Looked like a nasty crash, glad the driver is OK 👍

Formula E's hands are tied when it comes to circuits for the time being, the street circuits were intended to be part of its charm - it could go to places that F1 can't go, perhaps because F1's too loud and perhaps too many streets would have to be shut off for over a month in order to set up the track.

I have to say overall, it was pretty good. The sound was abit of a concern but after watching the race, it was a lot louder then I expected. It was like hearing jet fighters or space ships. I definitely heard a faint hum from the onboard, wonder what it was. The racing was great (apart from a certain French driver who mistook the first lap for being the last lap on his teammate). Looking forward to seeing more of this series.

The cars sound like a Japanese asthmatic having a heart attack in the middle of an Italian restaurant. Otherwise, what's not to like?

Sorry, I've been trying (and failing) to work out how to Cryptic Crossword and now my words are going everywhere

There is a lot I want to express. Here is my virtual notebook on this first race of the Formula E Championship based on that video earlier in this thread...

* It is very unusual hearing these cars zoom by from the different camera angles. A vicious-sounding car certainly has personality, but they do sort of sound like jet fighters.

* I wish there wasn't as much music playing during this video. I can understand possibly why there was so much music playing during that video, as if you're looking for something more interesting to listen to besides the sound of these cars. Even still, you're really taking away from the appeal by not allowing you to hear the cars in anger.

* The whole battery thing is very interesting. Almost like you can only do so much with only so much battery. It brings a different sort of strategy. You can't help but be fascinated as to how this whole deal is being implemented.

* The changing of cars almost reminds me in motorcycle racing when riders would change from a dry/wet bike to a wet/dry bike. It may sound like pathetic strategy to change machines, but that's what I'm reminded of in trying to change cars.

* Good grief! What a vicious wreck on the final lap! Best news (to me) was a look at how safe these cars are. Had this been the '70s or something, Nick Heidfeld would have been killed in a crash like that. I am never excited or crazy about crashes. I don't go on YouTube looking for crash videos. On the other hand, it does speak to the level of safety of cars in the event of brutal crashes, especially when the driver has mostly minimal injury or none at all.

* All congratulations to (the winner) and all who made the podium.

And that's all.

I think if you focus too much on the sound of the cars, you take away from looking at the series as a competitive racing series. I am looking at Formula E like a next step in the engineering and implementation of newer racing technology. These are purpose-built, proper racing cars utilizing electric energy. The traditional racing fan would find this to be completely stupid because others are used to the classic fury of a devilish race car shrieking at speed and scaring the daylights out people. But just like any industry or arena, there has to be evolution to ensure a peek into the future; and whether you like Formula E or not, this is just the first race that could go a long way into further evolution of racing machines and even the cars we'll be driving in the future. Even if the cars don't sound like they are capable of calamity, you still can't take away from the fact there are great racing talent piloting these cars, and that these talented drivers will push these cars and themselves as hard as possible. Just because they don't sound like furious racing cars doesn't mean they aren't capable racing machines. You can still have great racing even if the cars don't look or sound like the greatest racing machines ever built.

So I'm going to grade this first race as... a B+, or maybe an A-. Formula E is not going to blow peoples' minds right away. It isn't going to win over the respect of most traditional racing fans immediately. I think the ones who'll respect this series are the ones who love racing but also understands and acknowledges the further evolution of technology in racing and in automobiles. This Formula E series has that kind of potential. The development of these cars and such will get better over time. We at least have an idea of what to expect moving forward after seeing the Beijing action.

One thing will concern me about Formula E. How will the racing go in a wet or rainy race? All that electricity and such will mean you'll need to be VERY careful dealing with electrical material even as it's wet or rainy. It can be quite dangerous. That's really my only concern in regards to Formula E.

Those are all or most of my thoughts after one race of this championship.

The only thing I didn't like was the Fox coverage, more specifically the lack of lead-ins to and from commercials.

I enjoyed it though they need to do something about the music...not against it but it felt like dumbing down the whole thing, a bit like that whole festival vibe in Forza Horizon, probably fun to be there but not so great for spectators (who are mostly motorsports fans) at home. Also what was with the thing on the DJ's head? Deadmaus/Daft punk he ain't.

Also the Fanboost thing is perhaps great for a few races, to get some publicity, but I really hope they get rid of it after that. Level playing field please!

Pit stops seemed amateurish, I think they could be made smoother (and less potentially dangerous) though I appreciate the tracks won't have "real" pits.

Good work by Jann with the punditry though, seemed very nervous and tongue-tied at first but really got into it later. His testing the car was a nice piece too.

The only thing I didn't like was the Fox coverage, more specifically the lack of lead-ins to and from commercials.

It was essentially Fox just sharing a world feed (including the announcers) as opposed to having a dedicated broadcast team. Also from what I hear, the entire race was shown commercial free on the iTV coverage. Shows you how little Fox cares about racing in general.

I'll cut them a little bit of slack as it's the first ever Formula E event and it was on at 3:30AM EST so they probably weren't expecting much rating wise (I'd be shocked if is was even close to 5 digits), hence them just using the world feed in it's entirety. That being said, I can't imagine it would be that hard to get a graphic showing the top 5 with some music like channels usually do before going to commercial.

Hopefully they will add some production value for the third round in Uruguay as it will be on in the after-noon here so there may actually be some viewers.

Varsha said on twitter that he will be doing the next race.

Just wondering, why is Formula E racing on awful street circuits and has a DJ playing music while the race is going on and the sound affects? That's just embarrassing. The race was ok except for the end. Like father like son.

Because, according to Radio le mans, they have a top speed of 120 MPH. They would look silly on a normal race tracks, hence all the street tracks where the average speed of the track is much lower.

In regards to the battery, I read somewhere that in the future they want to develop wireless charging and have a "charging line" on track, different to the racing line. Personally I think this would be really interesting!

My review of the whole package:

I was skeptical from day one about how it'd all go together. Yes, it happened, and it wasn't a complete disaster - but it very nearly could've been in my eyes.

It was sheer luck that Heidfeld's head wasn't the thing flying into the barrier. I know that's a risk in all single seaters, but having a world class driver getting decapitated in the first event would have spelled the end of the series.

The sound is fine. I don't think they need to look at that. What they do need to look at is the FIA's bizarre music integration programme they're running with it. Formula EJ should not exist. It's laughable. I don't know why they think some bloke blaring out generic glitch trap will engage fans.

The formula for racing is actually really good. That I will say.

I think the EJ should exist, but only at the track after the race, not overlayed over the racing, maybe it more of a highlights video feel 👎 But loved the rest other than that!

Someone listens to Mid-Week Motorsport? ;)

Sad the crash over-shadowed some great racing - I was particularly impressed with Frank Montagny's charge through the field! I thought he may have been over-using his power but surprisingly he made all those overtakes and drove so aggressively and managed his energy!
Most of the other drivers appeared fairly conservative apart from the end of the race from Heidfeld.

Drivers of the race - Heidfeld and Montagny
Biggest losers - Prost and Senna

I hope Montagny gets fanboost in future, he looks like he would use it well.

The highlights of Beijing are on right now on FOX Sports 1. Next round... November 22, 2014 in Putrajaya, Malaysia. The rest of the schedule:http://www.fiaformulae.com/en/calendar.aspx

I am actually sad there is no event in Oceania. You know, I would have loved to see one of the races someplace in Australia or New Zealand. Maybe Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, or even Brisbane would have been nice on the Australia side. Auckland, Wellington, or Christchurch would have been cool New Zealand venues. But it's sad there are no venues in Oceania as part of this championship.

After watching the first race i say it wasnt as bad as i thought i'd be. But 90 degree corners and tons of chicanes will never make for great racing and the sound obviously sucks but that is to be expected. However i was rooting for Heidfeld and that was the worst blocking attempt by Prost that I've ever seen in racing almost looking intentional taking him out. Also another note is get rid of the stupid minimum pit stop time, its almost like they want it to be a follow the leader race.

I'm actually surprised at how good it was. I wish that the music wasn't playing over the race, but it was interesting and really brought a different aspect of strategy to racing. I'm really glad that Quick Nick is ok as that was a heavy crash. Also, I wish that Sato had gotten to the end of the race at a decent pace with no problems, as he is probably my favorite driver in the field.

Just got around to watching the first race. Both my dad and I were SHOCKED at what happened at the end of the race. Prost and Heidfield were pretty close for quite a while, and I was expecting Prost to win the race. But I never saw that move on the final turn coming. Looks like Heidfield was trying to overtake as Prost was entering the corner (I'm pretty sure Prost even looked and didn't see him, so he went for it), and they ended up colliding as Heidfield's car went flying into the barrier and got completely destroyed. What a shocking finish. Not sure how I feel about the Beijing street circuit though.
