Fortnightly Racing League

I'd like to gauge interest in a league that would run races every two weeks. The following describes drivers who would be a great fit for this league:
  • gentlemanly, honourable driver conduct
  • take racing relatively seriously
  • enjoy the challenge of realistic settings and regulations
  • unable to devote a lot of time to practice and frequent races
  • friendly, talkative
  • apologetic when appropriate
Official rules and regulations are yet to be determined (suggestions welcome), but I'd probably start with something like:
  • All aids off
  • ABS off for vehicles that didn't actually have it
  • Boost off
  • Penalties on
  • Damage on
  • Grip loss: Real
  • False start check: on
  • Grid positioning: Fastest free run time first
  • Scoring as per offline scoring (100 pts, 75, 60, etc.)
Baseline racing conduct:
  1. The ahead driver has right of way.
  2. No intentional hard collisions into the rear or side of another vehicle.
  3. No leaning or cushioning.
  4. No guiding of other vehicles off their chosen racing lines.
  5. Let oncoming vehicles pass (though you may choose which side opponents must pass on).
  6. Pass with minimal or no contact.
  7. Don't cut corners: Two or more tires should be on or over the track at all times.
Vehicle restrictions will vary from race to race. I'll most likely use the Performance Points system, and restrict to a specific tire type, and from time to time will exclude car classes (race cars, etc.). Tire restrictions will range from Comfort to Racing (varying from race to race). To start with, I will likely run two series in parallel: two races per race night. The two series will have different PP limits. Race length is undecided, but I'm looking to have enough laps to allow sufficient opportunity for clean passing, while not taking too much time to race. I'm undecided on whether to have races be long enough to have pit strategy come into play. Overall, I would like to keep the maximum time commitment needed for race night to be 1.5 hours, including meeting at the track, prepping vehicles, doing free runs and runs for official grid positioning, chatting after races, and so on. There will be official scorekeeping (specifics to be determined), and several races will comprise a series. Scoring will be reset for each series.

I am in Canada, so participants should probably be in Canada or the US to minimize network problems, though I will not outright exclude international participants right off the bat.

If you're interested in participating in such a league, please reply. Comments and suggestions welcome.

PM me I'm also in Canada ,Toronto area.

HJLamont: It will probably run the gamut. Did you have particular car classes or restrictions you prefer or dislike? If you have prior experience that shows that certain vehicle restrictions makes for a better racing experience, I'd be interested to hear your recommendations.

I think you'll find that there is an unlimited supply of interest (or demand) for good clean racing events. The lack of matchmaking makes finding a quality public lobby very time consuming and frustrating. People are out there and looking for ANYTHING that's even remotely organized. I'm willing to bet you could find 8 people to do a Daihatsu Midget event if you really wanted to.

Pick a day and time that works for you, lay out some restrictions for the event and wait for feedback. Adjust if necessary.

As for me, I'd be happy to participate if I can fit it into my schedule, which right now most likely be Mondays between 5pm and 8pm Eastern and Tuesdays after 5pm Eastern. I like the idea of every-other-week racing.

What I'm thinking of doing to start with is run two series in parallel. Each series would have a PP limit in place. I'm thinking something like 600 PP and 400 PP. Whether or not you must stick to the same vehicle throughout a series is up for debate. I'll probably start off allowing vehicle switching, but once the league matures, stipulate that a single vehicle must be registered to be used for the whole series.

Each race night would run one race from each series (two races total on the night). Series length would be 3 races to start with (6 week span), to get a feel for how things work out in the league. When the series are over, start again with different limits and vehicle restrictions, for variety's sake.

Day of week and time are open for discussion. I am good for weeknights, any time from 8pm EST to midnight.

Regulations: (tentative; subject to change)

Class A Series:

600 PP limit (HP and weight unrestricted)
Racing Hard tires
No vehicle class restrictions (race cars and concept cars allowed)

Class B Series:

475 PP limit (HP and weight unrestricted)
Sports Hard tires
Disallowed: Race cars, RM, LM, DTM, GT, concept

Tracks and lap counts to be determined.

That sounds like a lot of fun, but the lack of ABS does make it a bit difficult when using a controller - some cars lock the brakes too easily. I might give it a try though. :)

Although I'm exclusively a steering wheel user, I have used the controller recently, and without ABS, and it's not "impossible" like some people claim. It's just that most vehicles need to be tamed with tuning. If you don't tune them, then sure, the car is wild under braking -- but that's the case even when using a steering wheel and pedals.

Tips for no-ABS racing with a controller: Set your brake balance to be more front-biased; slap on LSD if necessary, tweak to taste; tune suspension appropriately (loosen rear-related settings); set controller settings to use an analog input for braking (i.e. L2, R2 or one of the analog sticks).

Anyway, we'll see about the no ABS rule, I'll put it up for discussion. Perhaps I can award extra PP leeway for non-ABS users, or something.

benda18: Yes, that is true. However, I was going to rely on people playing within the rules, compelled by their own honour. At the least, I can scan the player list before starting the race, to see everyone's ABS setting. I hope only to have people in this group who would not be the sort to try to sneak in a setting change, or such. :)

I think we have enough members to have a preliminary race, to iron out logistics. New members can sign up at any time. Start selecting cars and tuning! If you're unsure if a vehicle qualifies for a Class, PM me and I'll let you know. Where needed, I will specify that certain exact vehicles are allowed or not.

First Race - Regulations, Courses and Lap Counts: (lap counts may be adjusted slightly)

Class A Preliminary Race:

600 PP limit (HP and weight unrestricted)
Racing Hard tires
No vehicle class restrictions (race cars and concept cars allowed)
Suzuka Circuit (no weather change) - 7 laps

Class B Preliminary Race:

475 PP limit (HP and weight unrestricted)
Sports Hard tires
Disallowed: Race and race type cars (RM, LM, DTM, GT, JGTC, etc.), concept cars
Tokyo R246 - 5 laps

Schedule

Please respond with preferred day of week and time for us to run league races. I anticipate about an hour's time commitment for each race night (two races including positioning runs). My preferences are Monday, Tuesday or Thursday night, 11pm EST, but I am flexible and can start as early as 8pm EST if the majority wants such.
