Forza Horizon 4 Drops 'Carlton' and 'Floss' Dances Amidst Fortnite Controversy

It turns out Alfonso Ribeiro can't copyright the "Carlton Dance" after all:

a registration specialist for the U.S. Copyright Office told Alfonso's attorney that the actor's bid to lock down the rights to the dance is being denied. The copyright pro said Alfonso's moves amount to nothing more than a "simple dance routine."........"The combination of these three dance steps is a simple routine that is not registrable as a choreographic work."

I hope they do. I know a lot of people couldn't care less about the dances, but I like them.

Given how large the player base for FH4 is, there are plenty of casual users who would appreciate the pop culture references in the emotes so I think they are likely to be reinstated.

I enjoy them too. There's nothing wrong with adding some silly personality to a game that is fundamentally aimed at a more casual audience.

I also enjoy the cosmetics - I just wish their implementation was a bit different (put them all in a store, purchasable only with some earned currency - not on wheelspins). I also wish they leaned into having rare cosmetics that could only be earned via real challenges, beyond the rank hats for multiplayer. Have a league every monthly series, and the top 50 every month gets some new crazy cosmetic that like glows, or changes colour, or whatever.

Maybe even introduce cosmetic "sets", like an RPG, where you have to do some different serious challenges to earn each "piece".

Imagine a "Fresh Bread" guy outfit, but you had to earn the bread suit, and the monocle, and the arms and legs separately, for example. That'd be cool!

The one dance that does have some legal ground is Fortnite's default dance. You have to really get into copyright law to understand why, though.
