I think it's possible to know enough about drifting to be able to control a slide round a corner in a race and still think having more drift events in the game is a complete sack-sucker.It's always a good idea to get good/practice at drifting, or at least give it a go.
Not because drifting is cool or anything like that - but ability to drift can help you race faster. Grip racing won't help you drift better, but drifting can help you grip race quicker.
More times being able to control a slide has got me the lead in tight corners.
Knowing how to do long division by hand is a useful life skill but I wouldn't want to do it competitively.
The gatekeeping "real" drifters seem to look down on anyone who uses AWD drivetrains anyway because it's easy and straightfoward by comparison and will complain about these drift attack courses not being judged by angle and proximity to zone markers like NFS ProStreet.
