So was bored and decided to let bob do an endurance race for me. I used the GT by Citroen (the all electric one) and by the 18 lap or so... was out of juice. No problem I said, they must have a system set up when I can get some of the battery life back. So I had Bob pit... and low and behold.. they changed the tires and the battery did not recharge at all... Lesson learned... dont use a full electric car for endurance races... so much for the future lol.

yea the prius would be fine, and so would a crz; but a full electric car such as the gt by citroen or tesla would not work.

Probably cause you couldn't really charge a battery like you could fill a tank with fuel..
and it would likely take a long time to do a full battery system swap.

Yea thats what i figured but i was just like damn! kinda of takes the fun out of it

How did you figure they were going to charge the battery? Replace all the batteries? That would take the remainder of the race and then some!

The car uses a hydrogen fuel cell. Not batteries. They could have set it up to refuel in the pits, but I imagine they figured that making it do so would take effort and just didn't bother.

And I was going to tune a Prius for the the 4 hour race, oh well.
The Prius is a hybrid, or can't it run on its own engine alone?

Word of warning: When the Prius and CR-Z (and probably the Insight as well) run out of battery power, they technically still run. But at a speed more like a slug than a car.

Wow thanks for the info bro

It takes hours to recharge the battery, unless you were like 500 laps in front of everyone else, I't wouldn't be possible/practical to run a fully electric car in endurance.

It may take hours to recharge a battery, but it only takes seconds to read the post above that states how the GT by Citroen isn't battery powered.

Soooo... You pretty much can't tell the difference then, eh? :D

I assume at some point there will be real-life electric car races in which they'll swap out the whole battery pack. Have it slide out like a drawer, or snap off the bottom like the old cell phone batteries did, for quick changes mid-race.

I know people well enough to know that if it's got wheels, it's going to get raced. Might as well start working on trying to make electrics more fun to race.

Found this on a Prius website...4th post down:

"For comparison with a real electric car, the GM EV1's NiMH battery pack weighs 1150lb, with a 26kWh capacity. The Prius's 100lb pack has a measly 1.3kWh capacity, of which it uses no more than 0.5kWh (to preserve its life)."

http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-ii-...g/6376-how-much-does-prius-battery-weigh.html

I'd assume a car used for racing would have a battery capacity closer to the EV1's battery, than a Prius battery...

Electric cars and racing...

You know, that's like trying to fart out a forest fire. It won't work too well.

Nothing's impossible:sick:

Anyways, if there ever was an endurance race for electric cars, we'd probably see the cars spend half the time in the pits:dopey:
