I wanted to know if anyone out there had any good or bad relationships with fraternities or sororities.

I personally am a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon in the Iowa Delta chapter. I am really glad I joined. There is so much more to life now that I joined. We throw tons of parties and have just an all out great time. Plus, since we have a Dry house, there isn't a requirement for alcohol consumption. I, personally, do not choose to drink, but I don't blame my brothers for wanting to do so. We have had some great trips in the past, to many states and all have kicked major butt.

Just my two cents, join a frat or a sorority.

Fraternities: why worry about making new and different friends when you can throw up among your own kind?

I went to a university that had tons of fraternities (Lehigh; about 5000 undergrads and 35 fraternity houses). I looked into most of those 35 in my first two weeks of freshman year, realized they were all very nearly identical at the core despite all their attempts to look different from each other, and quit thinking about ever joining one. So I spen the next two years drinking their free beer on Friday nights.

My university (DePaul, Chicago) didn't have much in the Greek tradition, and no houses at all. I always had a negative opinion of them, but not much firsthand experience. I guess I'm pretty indifferent now.

I don't get frat houses.....what is the original point of having fraternities/sororities.....I'm still puzzled at by it all....

Well the frat house, in general, is where you hold your rituals and where you can congregate for events. Other than that, you don't do much there. But, when you are an upper classmen, you can stay in the house, which is cheaper than most other methods, plus you are always near the action.

The idea behind sororities and fraternities are to bring people together that have common goals in life, but are pretty shy. The rituals we have performed have opened me up to many different views on life and friendships.

All in all, the frat experience for me has been nothing but 100% awesome and welcomed.

hrmm....i see

frats and sororities seem to carry a steretypical role as well....cuz before finding out the actual answer, I always thought frat houses were places where huge, drunken and orgy parties take place.....that's how frat houses were portrayed in many movies....

and it appears the same thing is happening to frat houses in real life...cuz I hear lots of stoires of the things going on at those frat parties...and they ain't pretty...

it's good to hear the side of the story from ppl that actually was part of a frat....I wonder any upper classman here would give me some insight on this?

Well, I could give you a few tips on what is going to happen in the next few years. Most colleges and insurance companies are cracking down on fraternities and sororities. They highly dislike the alcohol presence in the houses. Most frats/sororities have been deciding on whether or not the money they have to pay for such a freedom in the house is worth the fun attached. Our fraternity decided long time ago, that we could spend our money in better places, like keggers at a bar. We even have trips to different cities that are in cause, because of our choice for a "Dry" house.

Keep that in mind when you go frat hunting, usually the frat dues will be higher for a "Wet" house. Not saying you're poor, but why pay for something so pointless?
