I'm currently trying to get some video off a DVD that my boss made.

We are making a CD at work to be given alongside products that a client of ours are selling. The CD is essentially just some HTML pages. I made some video clips of the products on the company digital video camera and my boss has created a DVD of the videos.

Unfortunately i require the video as multiple clips in avi or wmv format to go on the CD (to be embedded in the HTML pages). The only way i can think of getting the video off the DVD is to use some DVD ripping software and then cut the large video into the required clips using some video editting software.

Does anyone know of any free DVD ripping software and video editting software (can be seperate programs) that will run on a Windows 2000 machine that is safe, and free, and does a good job? I can't find any free ones just by searching Google.

Many thanks!

Well of course DVD ripping is fraught with legality issues, which has made the avilability of software to do it somewhat limited.

And free video editing software? Have you tried Windows Movie Maker? Ships with XP.

Appreciated, i knew it wasn't going to be easy to find. Fortunately i've stumbled across a 5 day trial for some ripping software which appears to be doing the job. It's ripping as i type.

That would be ideal, unfortunately i'm using Windows 2000. Might try and edit the video on my colleage's XP machine.

Thanks for the suggestions 👍

Well, looks like you've found something, but anyways:
www.doom9.org might have some answers. The place is dedicated to helping people create high quality/low filesize DVD backups. They have some helpful tools on their site.

I only visit occasionally for capturing advice so I don't have any more specific answers to this problem [unless capturing via a tv-card is an option for you]. But searching their forums should bring up some results rather quickly.

I'm not sure that programs like dvd shrink are the answer. As far as I know it just creates a disk image. I'm not sure that you can extract specific bits from a DVD with it in a easily read format.

Thanks guys.

I've sorted it out now. The ripping software i downloaded worked great and then i found a 'video splitter' program to allow me to extract the clips from the movie.

Just got to finish the HTML interface and it'll be finished :)

You should try After Dawn they like this forum dont condone comercial DVD copying, but they have a great array of software and guides too, along with a helpfull comunity. Most software is free, from DVD authoring to Ripping and Editing too. enjoy.

As for DVD shrink, this software rips the dvd to an Image as Boundary Layer pointed out, but it also saves them as files if selected, then you could use DVD to AVI to convert the DVD files from DVD-shrink to actual full size un compressed AVI's also DVD to AVI allows other compression tools to be used such as Divx or QT plugins. All the stuff you need is on that site. :)

[BTW if any of what I have said goes against the AUP please let me know and I will remove the post.]

Also I used Win 2000 and the software ive mentioned above works great as I used them at university for my video edint modules.
