In keeping with the whole aura of geekery generated on a site on the internet talking about a computer game, and who are currently voting three sci-fi films as their favourite ever...

What FRPGs did/do you play, if any? I'm talking about D&D, Warhammer, T&T - that sort of thing.

Begin responses... *rolls a 3* *rolls a 7* *rolls another 3* *rolls a 9* *rolls an 8* *rolls a 12* Now!

*Now you can move into the Dungeon jail cell and collect the spoon* *Ork appears*

Eeeek :dopey:

I played Diablo 2 for a while, that was about it.

EDIT: I do have a D&D board game that I used to play with my dad also, that was fun, for a while.

No - not computer FRPGs... That's like... films of books. You're supposed to use your imagination, then someone comes along and makes a film/game of it and suddenly you have to use THEIR imagination.

I'm talking all out, dice-rolling geekery.

D&D ..is there another one ? I still have some of the books..the monster manual & the Masters guide... ( a closet geek I was )..daytime thugery...nighttime 20 sided die monster mayhem...

There's literally hundreds. The most well known are Dungeons & Dragons, which effectively started it all, Tunnels & Trolls, which kicked D&D's turn-based fighting and gave it a kick in the nuts and Warhammer/Warhammer 40000, where people paint little tiny figurines and move them about a large piece of plywood of a Saturday. But they're just the tip of the iceberg...

I did collect Warhammer pieces [..] and paint them, I thought battling was dull.

There's irony right there... :D

Painting those little figurines with microscopic *****ng paintbrushes... :D

Yeh, and the paintbrushes and paints work up to quite a price, not to mention the actual models. But the whole battalions and armies looked really great in the end.

I though those were called TRPGs as in Table-top RolePlayingGames... But I may be wrong... Anyways... I've heard of some Japanese ones based on books... Lodoss Wars, and Cristania... (From M. Ryo i think) I've read his books but never bothered with the RPGs... Anyways... Baldurs Gate for the PC seems to be the game that is totally a FRPG or TRPG since it does go by virtual dice that you can't see... Game play itself is really similar... A great game I should say... (Was tedious for me cause of that element though)

So it basically generates a random integer for you? That sucks.

One of the whole aspects of FRPGs was the element of chance. If YOU pick up the dice and YOU roll them, it's YOUR input. If a machine does it, you're not doing anything at all. And yet again, by using graphical representations of things, you're not using your imagination any more - you're using someone else's.

I've never played any of these FRPGs, and likely never will (unless I wind up hanging out with some uber-nerds in University, if I actually end up going...)

Dungeons and Dragons baby!!! Both 2nd edition and 3rd edition :). I haven't played in 2.5 years though...

I also used to play Magic The Gathering a few years back...My friends and I only quit because we all went off to different schools.

What about Magic: The Gathering? Not that I ever played...ever.
nothing wrong with it. You can admit that you've played. It's ok man :)

I even used to the draft tournaments every couple weeks with my friends. It was fun... but we all made a sort of pact - if any of us found that someone in our group was 30, living with his parents, overweight and still playing MTG, we'd have to kill him. At least half the people that went were 25+, fat, messy looking, and many lived with their parents still. On the other hand, some of the older, more mature married guys that went there were really cool 👍.

Oh yea!

I played D&D in grade school and middle school. Then I put it down until… (dare I admit it) college. At which point I had the best games ever. I got together with a group of friends in college and we played (with the curtains drawn). We all kept it very hush hush (because that's damn geeky). But I would find myself in lecture drawing up plans for that weekend’s game.

It was extremely fun, but it college everyone gets drunk and the game becomes more about how to make fun of your friends than about the game (wait a minute, that’s what it was in grade school too, well minus the drinking part)…

I never found a group of people serious enough to make a really good go of it. It’s the perfect game that never gets played perfectly because the people running it (including me) don’t think things through.

I played magic also, still have some cards (because I’m under the mistaken impression that they might actually be worth something).

Oh yea, and I played vampire while I was in high school. That was fun, I had a group of goth friends... of course in high school it was more about hitting on the girls who were playing (we actually had a few goth girls playing the vampire RPG).

What character classes did you all play?
My most memorable was my level 15 Dwarven thief - lots of fun that was. My 2nd favourite was my level 8 halfling bard. My best friend ended up assassinating that one after an arguement :p. Those were really the only two i've ever played. The dwarf, I managed to hold for 3 years until we switched up to 3rd edition. Then we all made new characters and decided to start making our own rules for the game as well.

I role played my character quite well. My singing is enough to kill anyone within 100 meters :)

I don't remember exactly what i did... It was mostly fighting from behind the front lines, spellcasting and the occasional thief stuff.

I've been playing D&D on and off for years since my best friend introduced me to it in 5th grade. In fact, I recently picked it up after not having played for almost 5 years.

I also played Battle Tech (precursor to Mech Warrior) and Star Frontiers in middleschool. My longest hiatus was in highschool, where girls, rock music and being cool was largely incompatible with roleplaying games. Shortly after starting college and realizing I cared not one wit what cool people did and didn't do, I ran one of the most enjoyable campaigns I'd ever been a part of.

I have a Version 3.5 session this weekend. I'm the DM. Good group. All veterans of the game and good friends. As an aside, every one is a married, successful professional in their 30s, half of us with kids.. and to this day we still enjoy the game.

I DM'ed 99% of the time. But I remember playing with a Elf Ranger (gee, imagine that.. how creative :D).. and once with a straight up Human Fighter.

I must admit DMing is far more gratifying for me. I enjoy living the game through my NPCs. They are a hoot.

If you ever get sick of the nice weather out there and want to experience 89 degress and 99% humidity at 8 in the morning and rain you can't see three inches in, head over to the Florida. We'll save a seat for you at the table.

In D&D I usually played a ranger. I think I did paladin once, and fighter. I liked DM’ing much more than playing characters though.

In vampire I was toreador. I think I might have made it to 9th generation before we stopped playing. We blended that game with werewolf and mage (which I think was fairly common).

I think I tried werewolf at one point, but what I remember of that game is that the character development is fairly weak. In D&D and vampire you get a lot of character development.

We'll save a seat for you at the table.

Thanks. I’ll bring my lucky d20 (j/k).

I just had a twinge of nostalgia for my old gaming days and had to come dig up this thread. I wonder if perhaps we could get a GTP D&D group together. Let's see, if I sign up... and we get

///M
Famine
Emad

That's 4. That's probably enough to make it work, though we could use one more I think. I'm sure this won't get off the ground though due to schedules, communication arragnements, and the fact that ///M already has a game he DM's. Plus we'd have to reconcile some crazy time zones.

Just thought I'd toss out the idea.
