I just had a twinge of nostalgia for my old gaming days and had to come dig up this thread. I wonder if perhaps we could get a GTP D&D group together. Let's see, if I sign up... and we get

///M
Famine
Emad

That's 4. That's probably enough to make it work, though we could use one more I think. I'm sure this won't get off the ground though due to schedules, communication arragnements, and the fact that ///M already has a game he DM's. Plus we'd have to reconcile some crazy time zones.

Just thought I'd toss out the idea.

GEEKS!

Seriously though, I've never taken the time to learn to play. Played Magic: The Gathering during middle school for a bit, though.

Tch, why did I open this thread?

There's a RPG I was involved with about 8 years back with a set of friends and I cannot for the absolute life of me think what it was!!
It was D+D ish but not. Dammit....

*hits self in head in vain attempt to remember*

I never really got hardcore into table gaming because I've never had anybody to play with.

Though, I used to play Risk against myself and created a chance-based RPG system to go with it. (It's hard to play Risk against yourself without some kind of extra chance element thrown in.) Saving throw > that cannon.

Risk rocked, I was always the Red people so I could call them my little Red Army. :D

I've also played D&D and Warhammer, I collected Dark Elves.
:)

I briefly played Classic Battletech, but couldn't get anyone to play with me, so now my stuff for it sits in my closet.

I'd be game if you guys are. Nasty school schedule, but I can play with it. Send me a PM or msn me if this works out 👍

I am sooo going Lawful Evil Monk this time around

Oh, and Danoff - check out Neverwinter Nights 2. The game is based entirely off of the DnD rules down to character creation. To top it off, the storyline is pretty good (far better than most J-RPGs) even though the side-stories don't all match up as well as they should.

You people scare me.

Ciao!

I never played and FRPG games, my brother pre-psychotic tendancies era used to collect Warhammer 40k figures and paint them but I don't recall him ever actually playing it. I panted some of them when he'd let me, usually the plastic ones, but I was no good with thoes diddy brushes, half the head would be the same colour as the armour ect. I was more of a create my own thing kid, I didn't like painting them to a set colour pallet, who cared if he was a marine of the colon system, I didn't, if I wanted him to be red he'd be red. If I wanted to paint him yellow with black stripes like the dead wasp on the window ledge that was too thick to fly out the open window just above during the night, then I'd paint it that way. Badly ofcourse, but I'd use thoes colours.

In vampire I was toreador. I think I might have made it to 9th generation before we stopped playing. We blended that game with werewolf and mage (which I think was fairly common).

We did the same thing over here. I lead a double life through most of highschool, partying with the cool friends on the weekends, and spending the weekdays all stoned out of my mind at another friends house playing till I passed out. Our DM was pretty good too, he once based an entire month of gaming off the song "Hotel California", not letting us know until our characters had all basically gone insane trying to find a way out of the small Tavern we all walked into. It was the highest of times, it was the geekiest of times, but overall, it was a good time. 👍

We used to eat mescaline and play D&D ....does that count ? I stopped after I ate a pizza box and all. I remember beer being involved also.

Somwhere in my house is Axis and Allies. And some of the D&D books along with some of the sheets and maybe even the dice 20 sided 10 and 8 and six and four.

And unless I ate it ....a few risk games . I remember the pieces looking like candy a few times and I am sure I ate a few .

One more with soldiers like a chess game ? I forget what it was called.....and Dark Castle ? For those times when sleeping was not an option ??

Famine, are you happy now? you created a thread for Those Who Have No Lives.. :scared: *tosses the dices and uses the magical boots of escaping*

I used to play Basic Rules D&D - only really got as far as the first box, which is pretty amazing really... my next door neighbours sons used to play AD&D, and I played that a few times, but for some reason I preferred the simple rules.

My friends and I stopped playing after we encountered a random creature in an underground dungeon of my design.... Rolling 2d10 to find out what the creature was, it turned out to be a Donkey.... in a dungeon... soldiering on regardless, my friend enquired 'Does it speak the Common Tongue?', and it turned out it did  We couldn't stop laughing for about 10 minutes, and the game died :( However, we used to have some great times - we used some figures and a grid to help with fights, and the highlight was always an encounter with a 10'x10' Gelatinous Cube, which was usually a square of Lime flavoured jelly that I had nicked from the kitchen prior to the game. We had a brief revival whilst at University, however - a friend of an old schoolmate I went to Uni with DM'd a game, and it was alot of fun... however, he lived in Maryhill, Glasgow, so the journey home was almost as treacherous as the imaginary perils that we had just encountered

By the way, although I never use/used them, I have a large collection of AD&D books (as .pdf files) too...

I've had a go once or twice playing basic D&D with my father, but nothing serious got going. He still has many of the rule books stored away somewhere in his office.

He used to play it quite a bit in his younger days. As far as I know, he even used to run a store selling all sorts of D&D things. He even got mentioned in a quite large article in a magazine once or twice. He still has an interest for it now, but it's a shame he's not playing it anymore as many people he knows aren't interested anymore.

Ok, so currently we've got:

Danoff: Verified
Emad: Verified
///M: Unverified
Famine: Unverified
TM: Unverified

...and we even have an offer of rule books in PDF form (though I'm not sure what version of the rules they are).

Let's see.. You're in LA somewhere. Famine is in the UK. I'm in Jersey. Where's emad, So Cal somewhere?

So, what do we do, play by email?

Moving to Jersey effectively ended my Florida campaign. I miss it; it was an awesome group to play with. I'm totally jonesin' to play.

I'm totally jonesin' to play.

That's what I'm talkin' about! We need to play via phone, video conference, chatroom, etc. I'm sure we can figure out the logistics. I've got a webcam for video conferencing. The phone bill to England probably wouldn't be good, but maybe we can work some kind of VOIP thing out?? (Not that we have our UK participants in the "verified" column yet.)

I'm open to suggestions. Nobody I work/associate with these days would admit to being interested in playing, so my only shot is with GTP folks.

Ok so here's where we are:

------------Status-----------Equipment
Danoff----Verified-----------Webcam, No Books
Emad-----Verified-----------??
///M------Verified (DM??)---??
TM--------Unverified---------Books
Famine---Unverified---------??

Hmmm... I may have to start up a thread in the "local gatherings" area.

Yep.

I used to play D&D when I was 12-13. I also played a futuristic one where the characters were very similar to X-Men. Don't know if anyone can help me out with the name.

I think I played that one as well... some sort of marvel based super hero game where you create your own superhero?

My 2 cents:

D&D 3.5 would be the game I'm most interested in playing if we can work out the logistics.

But 3.x has a built in problem: combat is HEAVILY minature based. You pretty much can't play the game without some sort of board and tokens for the characters. My Florida group had a massive whiteboard with a 1x1 square grid printed on it, which was perfect for the game. I would draw the terrain, place the bad guys and the players would use their corner of the board to write iniative rolls, spell durations and ammo. We had a second whiteboard to record vital stats for the PCs. It worked very well and the combat sessions went like a well oiled machine.

Having a viable board would be the biggest logistical challenge in doing this.

I have a webcam and DSL, so some kind conferencing solution is no problem for me.

I also have Neverwinter Nights 2 and will be willing to try out doing something there, if we never figure out how to solve this problem.

Toronto here - eastern time zone.

As for as how and where, I used to fiddle around with an online tabletop app called openrpg or something like that. It did the job

I think 3.5 is pretty much the latest version. I'm most interested in that version as well, and played it college. I agree that it requires miniatures to figure out battles. We actually had cloth grid that we laid out the table with tokens that represented characters.

So we need to figure out how to get an online grid. I'll give it some thought. I'm sure we can work something out. Several ideas spring to mind but nothing that works quite right.

Sounds like a possibility. :)

Hey - i'm up for it.
You need a female presence anyway to stop you all almost killing each other and vowing never to play again ;)

I've not been involved in FRPG for many years but i'm a quick learner and should be able to pick it back up again. And i've found out the one I played - HeroQuest.

I have had a few goes at D&D. I really enjoy it and would love to play more, but I only have one friend who is also into it, and it's difficult for the two of us to schedule in enough time to play a decent game.

We've also tried playing Duel of Ages. Not quite roleplaying, or at least not in the same sense as D&D... but it's close, and there's plenty of die rolling. Anyways, neither of us really enjoyed that one. The rules do not suggest any victory conditions for the game (without expansions), they just say to play for a predetermined amount of time and count points at the end. :yuck: I think this is where the game really failed on us.

More often than not, when we do get together for a serious gaming night, our girlfriends are there as well - and they aren't quite as into RPG's as the two of us. We mostly stick to simpler German strategy games when they're there: Puerto Rico, Thurn & Taxis, Carcassone, Settlers, Der Herr Der Ringe (LOTR), etc

GTPlant, glad to have you on board.

I found this link:

http://www.treasuretables.org/wiki/index.php?title=Community_Resources

Which suggests that a few software packages might work out well for us.

OpenRPG
Role Playing Tools - Maptool
KloogeWerks
ScreenMonkey

The first thing to verify with these is that the network connectivity is solid. Then we just need to figure out which one our DM likes to work with best. At a glance, it looked like Maptool was the best one to use. So any volunteers to set up a quick session so that we can see if the online play works? What do you think Mike?

Anyone needs books let me know you can have mine... I even have the monster manual.

My books are all 2nd Edition - the only 'hard' copy I have is the Player's Handbook, which I have never used (mint condition original - bought it for posterity! ;) ) BTW, the 41 books I have on CD Rom contain a grand total of some 7,691 pages (an average 187 pages per book!!!), so that should keep you going for a while! :p (If you printed them all out on single-sided A4 paper, you would end up with a single book some 80 cm thick! )

I played magic also, still have some cards (because I’m under the mistaken impression that they might actually be worth something).

They might be; check eBay, you'd be surprised at how strong Magc still is. Granted, there are about three trillion cards out now, and it got way too confusing for me and the other people I used to play with, who cosidered ourselves "old-timers." Too many new rules, too many new stupid abilities and crap, it got to be too much.

But it was pretty fun when I played.

Just wanted to bump this thread again in case there were other folks that were interested in playing regularly. We got a good group together based on this thread and I'm wondering if there's more interest out there. If you want to play, send me a PM.

Edit: Minimum requirements: internet connection, microphone
