Edit 8/31/2013: See Post #9
Lately I have been having trouble with FSX crashing on start up. I did a little bit of research and found that some people had to change compatibility to XP SP2. I tried that and a few others to no success.
Most people seem to be getting a "Fatal error" in the menus but my issues seems to be a little different. I get this upon opening:

and since I had uninstalled and re installed I get this from the desktop:

Does anybody have a fix? thanks

Found this:

I had the exact same problem! I was so mad, I was about to post a question of how to get that away. Until I finally found out how to do it.

#1. Go to Computer on your start menu.
#2. Then click it and go to OS (CSmile
#3. Go to Program Files or Program Files (x86)
#4. Click Microsoft Games, Then click Microsoft Flight Simulator

Then Scroll down until you see the word fsx beside the Fsx icon. Now double click it and the game should come on properly, without the error sign coming up.

If it worked please reply back soon

Edit: Tree'd 👍.

My old friend had the same problem, he did as above, and his game worked like a charm.

Try to run the game, note the time you've done this.

Click Windows Start > Run > type event viewer, you'll see an event in one of the logs relating to this, tell us what the log is, screenshot would be good.

I don't exactly know what you're looking for here, so I don't know if this is the right screenshot?

That's a memory exception.

Click the Start button and choose Computer | System Properties | Advanced System Settings
From the System Properties dialog, select Settings
Select the Data Execution Prevention tab
Select Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select
Click Add and locate to fsx.exe
Apply and OK. Restart machine, run FSX.

If that doesn't work, read and follow the below:

didnt work. It said FSX needs it on.
I've read something about deleting uiautomation.dll but I have no idea how or where, it's not in program files x86

Ok so I attempted to take another shot at this.
here is the eventlog for the crash of FSX.exe

under the faulting module it says its an Nvidia driver tthat's the problem, so I looked it up and another forum said to check the manufacturer's website for driver updates which I did and downloaded the file.
My question is, what do I need to know before installing the "R297049" driver, and if it screws up is there a way to revert back to previous update. Or am I not even in the right ballpark of what I need to do. My biggest fear is screwing my computer up to the point of no return and making things worse.

(This is still all from not being able to open FSX past the starting menu and the shortcut is "null" but I have to go all the way into FSX.exe to attempt to open it only to see it crash)

It's been a while since I played FSX, but I don't remember having much problems getting it started, there was one simple little thing I had to do but can't remember what it was.. Maybe this can help you? http://www.simforums.com/Forums/topic29041.html

Updating graphics drivers has never caused any problems for me, I doubt it'll do any damage to update it.
