Someone should tell toyota to stop wasing their time with multiple Priuses and focus on this. At this rate, I am feeling this car is going to stay a concept.

When the Japanese decide to make a sports car, they normally do an excellent job. However, Toyota was born from accountants and an abacus...so you're feeling that this will remain a concept is probably right.

If you're wrong, it should be an excellent car and very fun to drive. When Japanese engineers are let loose in a factory, good things happen. I can't really think of any Japanese sports car that was a complete dud...even the smog-choked stuff from the 80's is quirky and fun.

Wasting their time?

The hybrids already are and will be the most important type of car in next decade or two, the sales of hybrids is the fastest growing car marked ... and when the Prius later this year or early next year comes in a station wagon 7 seater it will be even more suitable for small families, inter-city cabs etc etc ...

The sales of these boring hybrids is the foundation of being able to build concepts like the FT86.

I hope it becomes production model ...

Reading the news apparently collaborator Subaru will build its own Toyobaru with about 260 hp in contrast to Toyota's 200hp car. From the joint venture Toyota will gain the 4-cyl Boxer with ideal weight characteristics.
Read post 19 of this thread.

I wouldn't normally be the one saying this, but 200bhp doesn't seem like enough. The FT-86 concept has some pretty meaty tyres so if it's to go sideways like it's forebear you'd need to be pretty ham-fisted with it even with 200bhp.

I'd prefer skinnier tyres, lower weight and then you could get away with less power.

Unfortunately, manufacturers these days major on grip but things like steering feel and adjustability are pushed aside.
I was thinking 200bhp seems too low also, but will give them the benefit until it's reviewed, on paper 200bhp is too low in comparison to family hatchbacks that over 200bhp with some going to 335bhp (Audi RS3), in a shopping car!
So 200bhp will need to be very effectively used to be considered a performance car, rwd will be an asset, they need to give it brilliant weight balance and suspension, perfect engine and transmission combination, superb steering and brake feel, a fine tuned throttle response, great design, character etc. Then they can manage with 200bhp I would hope. Not sure of the final official kerb weight of this car, but that will be an important factor.

Wasn't the last word on this that Toyota was going to aim it at being more of a Solara replacement anyway?

More like replacing the Celica and Supra, atleast in Europe that is ...
Times have moved on a lot since the Supra/Celica. This new car on paper is a good upgrade to at least the last Celica, more power and rwd instead of fwd, but they need to outshine current hatchbacks and fwd coupes, the Scirocco for example, which has a 200 and 260bhp choice just like this new Toybaru model coming.

Since we have no Scirocco in the states(although I wish we did), this Toyobaru should have no problem here.

I just hope they dont **** up briliant looking concept. I want light and sporty looking car, not heavy and muscle looking.
Also What is power without control? 200hp is enough if Toyota make it right. Over 300 hp FWD cars is just ridiculous.

It's RWD.

Assuming it's RWD, yes.

That's what I thought, Subaru goes to great length to advertise its symmetrical AWD - one of the main reasons to buy one. So having a new car without your flagship customer value proposition is risky.

Yeah, I don't understand why Subaru makes such a huge deal out of being AWD only. I thought it was cool and made sense but now I'm realizing it's probably costing them sales, same goes for the flat4 engines. But, since they're intent on sticking with it, it must be working out for them in the end. I guess it's good to know that they would rather do what they're doing, and well, as opposed to going for the bigger sales and compromising their image. Though this concept says otherwsie, maybe.

I'm glad Subaru is doing that though. Look at what their sales are saying. And look what happened to VW when they decided to stop doing what set them apart and started chasing sales.

Subaru has some pretty loyal owners too.

And I for one am glad that Subaru tends to stick to its guns while other companies start castrating themselves *coughtoyota*.

Eh I think Subaru started going down hill when they introduced the new Impreza, and the new Legacy looks like crap. However they've somewhat redeemed themselves with the 2011 WRX/STi models. Hopefully that's a turn-around.

They've made two FT-86 concept models already. Are they actually going to put one into production yet?

So we've seen the FT-86, the FT-86 G Sports, now this FT-86 II, and where's the Subaru 0864? (or whatever they call it)

Tips for Toyota: call it an AE86. You want sales, bring back some history.

Tips for Subaru: stay away from AWD. It doesn't belong here. But do offer a turbo Flat-4 in the future.

I think it's more than that. They need to one-up Mitsu with the Impreza, drop the Tribeca, and add a proper transmission to the Forester. I like the Legacy though.

Subaru should call it the RS or something of that sort, WITH AWD. I think a RWD subie would be odd and breaks their marking of having AWD on every model.
