Had it happen not once but twice at Daytona in a NASCAR. Was drafting like a bugger to conserve fuel (as they do in real life) and made it all the way out of turn 4 before it conked.
Funny thing is that it limits the speed to a speed thats slower then pit lane so when you enter pit lane the car speeds up. I actually ran out of gas in an online NASCAR race but was able to drift to the finish and win the race. 50 Lap race and I saved the replay.

It dont suck, in real life that would be end of, you suck for allowing yourself to run out of fuel , maybe excuse the 1st time but certainly not the second, think yourself lucky the game allows you to go into limp mode to be able to refuel.
