At first I was "WTF is this drivel?..."

But now that I read on, I haven't laughed so hard in ages!

👍

Even the most fervent Christian members here will get a laugh out of this one:

"But God don't talk in Arabic. He talks in a REAL language, namely, English. It's true that back in them days He translated that to some other language after Speaking it in English, but after all, it's His universe and He can do what He doggone well wants to do."

...and God said, "All your people are belong to us".

Praise the lord I has been stupid.

Wow, some of that was beyond retarded. Jesus made it very clear that you don't perform sins while in the womb and children born with afflictions are NOT fault of the child. Sheesh, what moronic garbage.

John 9:1 And as [Jesus] passed by, he saw a man which was blind from [his] birth.

John 9:2 And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

John 9:3
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

I've seen this before, it's quite funny.

My favorite are the ones that support creation, I can't believe some people are that backwards in their thinking.

It's also disgusting how Christians treat atheist...how about I throw you in a river with weights on your ankles because obviously you are an idiot for believing in God. This is the reason I can not stand Christians in general...they have this holier than thou attitude towards people who aren't like them.

Backwards? Then you may want to see how many people on GTP are backwards. :D https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51448&highlight=creation

I assume you mean "some" Christians. Because the exact same thing can be said about every religion, race, creed, gender, social status etc.

Polish up Joey's statement a bit and I agree - I strongly dislike the prevailing attitude among many Christians that because they're Godly, they have morals, and that I'm not means I couldn't possibly.

Oh wow, some of those had me falling out of my chair. I'd dread to think what actually having to interact with these people on a daily basis would be like. :scared:

Obviously not all Christians think like this, but it's this kind of stuff that makes a "normal," "ordinary" american Christian family seem really, really creepy to me. It's just mindblowing.

This note at the bottom of #3 should give you an idea:

Yeah, I saw that, that one is really messed up. It's amazing the different ways in which people can react to things they dislike.

After reading this, it makes me ashamed to be the sort of Christian that I am. This is actually pushing me away from Christianity because Christianity doesn't make much sense really.

These people are frikin nut jobs. If I had the time, id definitely have a talk with these stupid people.

I'm an archaeologist and and anthropologist, the thought of a magical unseen being snapped their fingers and out popped the universe is highly unlikely. Intelligent design while I don't agree with it has a lot more scientific merit then creation. If I can recall Pope John Paul II even agreed with evolution through the hands of God...which is perfectly acceptable and is a good way to combine science and religion in a way that compliment one another.

There is a lot of uncertainty on what Einstein's beliefs were so I'm not going to buy an article that claims he believed in creation.

A majority of Christians I come across are like that, I attended Catholic school for 8 years as well and got the vibe from most of the people in there as well. But I have friends of all religions and the only ones who treat me differently when it comes to religion (I'm NOT an atheist for the record) are the Christians. They think by "saving me" they are being my friend when in fact they are being jackasses. I think the most tolerant religion is that of Buddhism, I have a few friends that practice and I've been to a temple with them (which was awesome). I think if I ever were to take up a religion I would have to Buddhist or some other eastern religion.

Surely you mean you are studying to be an archaeologist and an anthropologist, right BionicXtreme?

Ya I should have said studying, my fault. I won't have my degree until 2009 and then it's off to grad school for a while.

I'm actually on a dig locally right now which is not nearly exciting enough to really talk about and it's for a college class. We haven't started digging yet but I'll put up some pictures once we do in June.

Hmm...interesting. Well I don't care at all what the pope thinks about the scripture since he's nothing more then a man elected by other men. Just like the president.

I find this very ironic. If they truly believe that you will be lost if they don't get you on the path to be saved, how could they possibly be considered a friend if they didn't constantly try?

Think about this, if I was truly your friend would you want me constantly telling you your whole concept of religion is wrong and I'm trying to save you from throwing your life away by having blind faith in something that doesn't exist?

I don't care what religion you are, people just need to understand there are thousands of beliefs in the world and everyone of them thinks they are the right one, since there is no way to test it one should look at it as all of them have an equal chance of being right as well as an equal chance of being wrong. This is why I tend to be agnostic on the whole thing.

If someone thought the only way they could be your friend is if they gave you a big bear hug every 3 seconds, would you not be annoyed by the constant hugging? Would you not want them to express their friendship in a different way?

Most of us non-believers understand that convert-happy Christians are just trying to help. That doesn't make it any less annoying.

Don't let a minority of nutjobs drive you away from your faith. And don't stand for X telling Y they are wrong for whatever reason. Acceptance, understanding and 'turning the other cheek' are all central to Cristianity.

Fundamentalists seem to forget this, and nowhere is their contradictory point of view more obvious than when they claim to be 'pro-life', yet call for the deaths of those who disagree with them (eg. people who perform abortions).:dunce:

Science is great for trying to explain our world and universe. Science can help us gain insight into WHAT, WHERE, HOW and even WHEN things happened/ work etc.

One thing that science will never be able to explain is WHY. God/ religion can.
Spirituality and morality are what Religion is there for. It informs people on how they should live their lives.

I don't see why the two can't work together - in fact, most Christians (and people of other faiths) don't have a hang-up about some supposedly massive contradiction between science and religion.

After reading my post it sounds stupid.

Anywho, what i was basically saying is that a lot of christianity makes absolutely no sense. I do believe in god and mostly think that he created the big bang which makes a lot more sense to me.

my religious preference should not change the subject of this topic, and I'd rather nobody else say anything about my replies in this thread.

carry on

Most religions makes no sense, either you have faith in it or you accept the facts and see it as wrong/incorrect.

Most religions makes no sense, either you have faith in it or you accept the facts and see it as wrong/incorrect.

I see religion's central role as being a moral framework that informs how to lead your life. eg. 10 commandments guide you on how to behave in your everyday life.
In this way, it is usually very relevant, and can work very well.
It can also provide a set of common core values that a society can share, and encourages a sense of community.

Most central religious doctirines are based on commonly shared religious beliefs, eg. there is a higher power, that it is wrong to kill another person, etc.

A true Atheist (I've never met one- they always fall into the agnostic camp) believes there is no greater power of any sort beyond the physical world.
Therefore, when you die= no heaven, no hell, no after-life, no consequences.
So if there are no consequences/ judgement above/ beyond the 'human animal', then morality and ethics are purely subjective, and it follows that the Atheist is not bound by any moral reference, and would essentially have to be a Nihilist.

In a nutshell: since there is no higher judgement regarding what is right or wrong, you should be able to do whatever you want.
(Let's not go into the issue of laws and society- that strays into another topic, and something being illegal does not make it immoral)

I don't know anyone that thinks like a true atheist- they all have some sort of sense as to what is right and wrong- although they can't tell me WHY.
And most of them, if pushed, will admit they have some sense of there being some sort of higher power that is beyond them/ their understanding, which essentially makes them Agnostic, not Atheist - the word 'Atheist' gets too much mileage.

On second thought that's a bit harsh.

Your view on what atheist are is so far off it boggles my mind. I know several atheist and I'm yet to find one that doesn't live at least a decent life. You don't have to be religious to be moral, in fact I think a lot of the times religion promotes immoral activity.

It's not my point of view- that's the definition of an Atheist, ie a true Atheist, who like I have said, I have never met.

My point is that every single person I have met that claims to be an Atheist, actually isn't- they're not Nihilists, they are usually moral, ethical and upstanding members of society, and if you push them through enquiry, end up saying they believe in some sort of spirituality, no matter how vague. So they are actually Agnostics.

One of my bosses at work doesn't believe in God, but we joke with him that he's the most Christian person we know, because he acts like a Christian SHOULD.

Also, you are spot on that religion sometimes promotes immoral activity.

So my question to you is, if a person claims to be an Atheist, how do they decide right from wrong? What/ who decides what is moral? What is the morality based on?

Society.

If you look through anthropological and biological writings on the subject it's seen that morals and ethics are the result of evolution over time. During hunting and gathering times when ancient man walked the earth, if you killed someone with in the tribe you greatly weakened that strength of the time, you were then punished and cast out, resulting in death. If you stole food, you were not contributing to how the tribe/band/etc. was working and punished in the same way.

Over time people learned that there will be consequences for disrupting society and it was just ingrained into every day life. Not all evolution has to be physical.

You should take a sociology course, Gonz013. Social norms, mores, and taboos are far, far stronger than you give them credit for.

All atheism means is "the belief that a God or Gods do not exist; the rejection of Theism (belief in a God or Gods)."

Just because someone thinks there's no such thing as a God, that doesn't mean they have nothing to base their morals on, and it doesn't mean they see no consequences in committing wrongs.

The only reason why more people are agnostic than atheist is because those who turn away from religion tend to be logical and critical thinkers (just an observation), and they know that it's foolish to claim that you know, without a doubt, that there's no such thing as a God or Gods.

Yes, I agree, but those values are almost always tied to religious beliefs.
The belief in some sort of God/ Gods/ Higher power has also been central to all societies, and this is clearly reflected through anthropological and biological writings.

It's theorized that it's the central part to all MODERN societies. There is way to much we don't know about pre-civilization to see how it all worked but it's theorized religion rose into being not for morals and ethics but rather due to explanations of the un-explained. Say you were a human back some 5,000 years ago...how would you explain the northern lights with out any idea of what modern science knows? You would make up a story to explain them, hence how religion was started.

This is all theories, but that's all it will ever be since there is no way to ever prove it without a time machine. I tend to agree with the statement religion was created to explain the unexplained since some of the earliest evidence of religion has to do with mother earth and the fertility goddess. People didn't understand why it rained, or why the sun came up every day...so a higher power was needed.
