Furthest Distance You've Driven

I haven't done anything too special, as I'm yet to drive abroad (EDIT: that's a lie, I just remembered that I've driven in Spain, but that was about 300 miles in a day). So far the furthest distance I've driven in a day is the route below (and back), which totals 500 miles:

Saying that, I drove that in a rental Vauxhall Astra, so it felt like much further...

I've also driven Edinburgh to Goodwood, which is just under 500 iirc.

The furthest I've driven by myself in one go except for gas and quick meal stops was from Santa Rosa to Seattle (about 835 miles).

The furthest that I've driven while sharing driving with others is Seattle to Inland Empire (Los Angeles) and back about a week later (basically down and up the US West Coast). I made that round trip 3 times, and each way (about 1185 miles), we drove straight through. The time that I drove the most, I probably did about 80% of the driving.

I know the Astra gets a lot of stick, and whilst it's not a great car, it's also not a bad car, my 4500 mile road trip was undertaken in this Rental Astra...

... and to be fair to it, it didn't miss a beat and despite living in it for 2 weeks it it remained pretty comfortable (no back-ache etc.). It's only real shortcoming was the teeny-tiny narrow rev range available for over taking.

@GTP_Ingram Where was your destination in North East Wales? Definitely close to my neck of the woods. Looks like Wrexham, Bangor-on-Dee or Llangollen.

The main problem I had with it was that it felt totally gutless. I was driving along thinking how underpowered it felt for a 1.4, later I noticed the 1.6 badge on the boot...

It was a little place called Mold. My friend used to work in an outdoor centre nearby.

Detroit to Oklahoma City, just shy of 1100 miles.

I was driving my brother-in-law's 1992 Camaro out to him for a birthday surprise. My wife was pregnant at the time and refused to drive, the Camaro was only a V6 with a 5spd with no cruise control or cup holders. Fuel consumption was ridiculous. We must have filled up 5 or 6 times whereas the Malibu rental made the trip with only 2 fills. The car didn't feel too good at speeds over 75mph, so we had to keep it under that speed the whole way.

I've also routinely made trips from Detroit to Greenville SC many times, in various vehicles. The most exciting one was when we drove my old GMC Jimmy with 170,000 miles. Pieces were literally falling off of the car the whole trip; mirrors, spare tire, body panels, etc. Had a hard time started every time we stopped for gas.

I made the Detroit to Greenville trip in an old Grand Prix of mine once in 9.5 hours. That was very dumb and dangerous but it was an emergency...

Why were you 2 so close to my hometown? Did you try to ban me in real life?
We knew it was a Dutch town starting with H, but we went to the wrong one.

After a load of Dutch guys came over here for the 8th UKGTP, a few of us were invited over there for a LAN, Dutch style. It was one of the most interesting weekends I've had...

A hair under 1000 miles in a 944, twice. Driving from Austin to a Longhorns/Bulldogs game at UGA and back again. Good times.

They were offered a smoke and a pancake, flapjack and a cigarette, cigar and a waffle, pipe and a crepe, and a bong and a blintz.

But alas, there's no pleasing them.

964 miles from Ft. Lauderdale to Williamsburg. I was quite worn-out upon arrival, so we walked to dinner (two blocks away).

This one was 550 miles...no interstates, no limited-access highways, nearly all two-lane roads (many have been widened since then) just for the sake of it. Mostly just fun and/or scenic roads roads from sunrise to sunset.

(The Yeehaw Junction area is dull as dishwasher, no it wasn't all fun.)

I've been wanting to do a drive all the way through the West Coast from Seattle all the way down. I'll probably be doing it sometime. Farthest I've driven in the West Coast is SF to Big Sur. That was a measly 2 hour drive.

About to go from Pittsburgh to Atlanta tomorrow (I'm sitting at the airport waiting for my flight to Pittsburgh as I'm typing) to retrieve my grandmother. Doctors say she can't fly (lies) so this will be my third trip this year... It's a boring one until you get around the middle of Kentucky...
Or wherever Florence is..

Florence is just a stone's throw from Cincinnati; that water tower is only 7-8 miles from the Ohio River, and thus, the state border.

Unfortunately, it still means you're only 40% there...

Longest single run I've done is Florence (Italy) to Weybridge (West of London)... >1,000 miles.

14 hours door to door including the ferry crossing from Calais to Dover. Took it steady (ish ;)) through Switzerland as their speeding fines are a bit frightening, but pretty much flat out through Italy and France. I asked my wife to drive the last hour to Calais as I needed a nap... woke up 45 mins later, glanced at the sat nav and she was doing 120mph. I love my wife :D

Also did Weybridge to Bologna in 13 hours and Weybridge to Nice in the South of France (and the return journey), both in under 12 hours.

We've just bought a property nr Marbella (Southern Spain), and at some stage I'm going to have to drive down there to take some stuff... sat nav says is >1,400 miles, but I don't think I'll be doing that in one hit

Furthest I've driven myself was probably around 60-75.

With my grandma driving, it was somewhere around 3000+ Miles. Drove from Los Angeles, to Raleigh, NC.

What a trip that was, and amazing at that, I would love to do it again one day. We took her Jayco camper, a camped everywhere as often as we can. What was also great about that, is that I was able to bring my Nintendo 64 for our down times :D. What I liked most about it is seeing how different each state was, being from L.A all I usually see is a concrete jungle, so it was nice to see alot of nothing(as weird as that sounds.)

Lol... Yeah it was somewhere close to the river.

I saw it comng up ahead and reached for the camera. I like the mountains we went through while in Tennessee..

Boy oh boy has today been an interesting trip.
Started from Weirton, WV (West Virginia) and finally got home (south of Atlanta) after about 15 hours of driving. We left at 6:05 this morning and what should have only been 11-12 hours got delayed by 3-4 hours of ice road in Zainesville, Ohio.
I could see some cars were stopping but then they went around a corner past a bridge. As soon as I rounded the corner there were brake lights for about a good mile at a snails pace. Before I got to a stop a woman came up behind me in a Durango (whilst texting on her phone most likely) and locked up, swerving into the right lane.... idiot.

There were signs all the way along the route saying accident ahead but I don't understand how they got all the flares, cones, electric signs, and detour signs out for a crash.. I checked last night for any weather we might run in to and at 9:30 we were supposed to be in Columbus, Ohio and that is where the freezing rain was supposed to hit us.

Nope.. about two hours earlier than expected did it hit. Here is a map with some drawings to explain the horror:
Screenshot 2014-11-22 22.21.47.png

From east to west was our travel, and there are three locations on the map I marked out.
Spot 1 is where the Durango nearly careened into the back of us, not even an hour and a half into the trip..
After that we got off (forced off) I70 and went on SR22. At the third arrow we waited about an hour while moving 100 yards at the maximum. Arrow 4 was about another hour of waiting.. At spot 2 my grandmother in the back had been waiting for about three hours in the car after eating breakfast on the go. As nature has it, we all had to go to the bathroom. The only public/private place was an elderly care home, and I thought I could pull into the front drive which was only at about a 4 % gradient for five yards.... Nope. Ice. So I had to back up, go up around a 8% gradient hill we were going down and found another way in. Stopped, did business, got back on the road.
From the number 2 spot to the arrow that turns right took us around 45 minutes. So far, we haven't seen the first police officer, or anyone directing traffic. Detour signs didn't exist anymore and I was getting pissed off. It was about 3 hours we had been sitting, and I'm not sure what the distance is exactly now but it wasn't more than three miles I expect. After we see I70 again I was even more pissed off, because there were vehicles on it going west, but moving slower than we were. I took the left to the next light which the entrance ramp was on, and there was an armada of police cars and an accident all the way at the end of the entrance ramp. More Ice.
I asked the cop where to now? The arrows show the rest of the way. Following those took about 5 minutes total.

I was completely pissed off with the way they handled that. There was traffic bumper to bumper from the 1 all the way to the 3, not guided (until the entrance) and no one at lights to stop other non-essential traffic. I have to admit that was the most 3-4 ridiculous hours of my life.
I just did a rough pedometer scale and it turns out it was about 9 and 1/2 miles from 1 to 3. A lot further than I thought but still... 3-4 hours to get through it all..
After getting back on 70, I was balls to the wall all the way to Cincinnati basically. Ice or no ice I was determined to get back home today..

1751.8 miles. Or about 30 hours. From Denver, CO to Princeton, NJ.

From Ontario to Ft. Lauderdale 1937 miles or 3118 km on our way to a cruise. 3 Stops at Hotels in Barrie ON, Summersville WV and somewhere in SC close to the Georgia border. Probably would've taken a day less if we didn't have the in-laws trying to keep up.

My furthest drive was from Dortmund in West Germany to Innsbruck in Austria.

Thats like 741km ~ 470miles

Same destination....

That's the longest distance I driven myself in one stint.

Luxemburg - Innsbruck with a friend = 8 hours

Innsbruck - Luxemburg alone = 7 Hours (only peepee pauses)

On the return I stood 45 min in a traffic jam (picture included),

which made the 7 hours even more astonishing, but german Autobahn + Audi = 250 at times :D

As passanger it was probably a trip to Italy with my parents, which is around 1000km

Furthest single day solo journey. Stopped 4 times for fuel and once for food/supplies. 1012 miles or around 1600km is what my odometer read.

Furthest multi day (3) solo journey. Stopped in Philidelphia and Knoxville. 2200 miles or around 3500km. I think I did about 800 miles each day. The Appalachians can be a very lonely feeling place....

All of this in a non-cruise control equipped Mazda 2.

Bonus: Furthest non-solo journey. And it was an epic one:

mexico_zpsad3d1033.jpg

Nearly 5,000km each direction totaling well over 10,000km with included diversions and extended stays in different places. Mostly stayed in Saltillo, Mexico.

I'll take no cars vs stop and go Atlanta traffic...

Unfamiliar, unlit, mountainous, eastern Tennessee roads, at night, going on 14 hours of driving with oncoming glare and deer everywhere wasn't much fun. That's why I parked it just west of Knoxville. I was genuinely terrified.
