G27 Alignment Problem [SOLVED]

Been using my G27 for past 2 months just fine with GT6, then I decided to try it out on rFactor. Got my computer setup and hooked up my rig, installed the necessary drivers then fired up rFactor. After a dozen turns, the wheel wouldn't align center anymore. It would offset to the left little by little before it hits lock. Thought it's a PC only problem, but I've hooked it back up to my PS3 and the problem still exists? I've done research and problem seems to be hardware based, not software based. In that case why did it work fine on PS3 for 2 months of hard driving?
 
@Harry6784, Reason loosen screws, solve can be easy as tighten up those two screws what are holding "optical reader" on rear of FFB engine, if you are under warranty you can replace your wheel from it, or if not then just opening wheel and tighten those screws by yourself.

That screw, and there is another under pcb on right side. Small screwdriver and you don't need to take more than shield of from that "optical reader" unit. If you want do it perfectly, you can put new better screwlock glue to there and you don't have to worry it anymore, without it you redo tightening once in a few years.

Broken optical reader wheel can be also cause of problem, that breaks up if those screws are loosen long time.

I just don't understand why it worked perfectly fine for 2 months then 10 minutes after hooking it up to the PC it messes up :lol:

@Harry6784, did your G27 come in the newer Black/White box, or the older Green box? I'm asking because I understand that the Optical Encoder for both versions are different (i.e. older had finer, more closely-spaced gaps, whereas the newer has larger, more loosely-spaced gaps). Which does that site sell for, both G27s or just the older version? Thanks.

I believe it was the black box (I got it off of Amazon). Site just says the encoder wheel is for G25/G27...

@Harry6784, contact to re-seller for warranty fix, or direct contact to Logitech and ask gently from them to get it fixed under warranty.
That encoder wheel isn't working on that model what you have.
G27/G25/(DFGT?) - Undocumented wheel lock settings - Guide starts one page earlier.

Well crap. Would it be possible to just use superglue to reinforce my existing cracked one?
 
Right. As OdeFinn said, what cmlaserservice has currently is still the old one. I've contacted them and they confirmed it, but are still working on getting a valid prototype for the newer G27 (black box).

Would you care to describe how you think it broke? You play other games w/ strong rattling, perhaps like Dirt, WRC? Heard this is common for rally type of surfaces w/ stones, etc. I don't have GT6 so I'm not sure if it also has tracks w/ strong FFB.

I don't drift or rally, I mainly use it for circuit racing. I don't think I'm particularly rough with it, it was working fine with GT6. Hooked it up to my PC to play rFactor and literally on my first lap it would start to mis-align.
 
I see. Hope mine doesn't bugger too. Perhaps try contact Logitech, and/or Amazon, as they have good service from my experience.

So I ordered the brass encoder for no reason. You would think it would say somewhere on the site that not all G27's use the same encoder. But I took the original cracked one, epoxied it VERY carefully, assembled everything back together and about 8 hours of gameplay later everything still works perfectly. Hopefully this is a permanent fix...


BTW if anyone needs a brass encoder, PM me :lol:
 
@Harry6784, your glue fix can be permanent, if you just remember tight those two screws once or twice in a year. When those get loose encoder wheel will hit on pcb's sides and crack.

I keep hearing people say that these aren't interchangeable, but I'm pretty sure you can use either. Plus you'd ideally want to use the older version as it provides better resolution since its got more slots.
 
Encoder works by reading the frequency of waves that pass through the wheel. If it reads X number of breaks in the signal, it corresponds that to Y amount of degrees the wheel has been turned. Say 100 breaks in the signal corresponds to 30 degrees of rotation. The older wheel has slits at a higher interval so 100 breaks in the signal now only read 10 degrees in rotation.

Nope, the distance for the sensors are farther apart for the new one, making it impossible to use that certain encoder.

Like @TakumiFuji01 said, they don't work. Glenn of CMLaser Service (the source from Thailand) confirmed this when I emailed him. He said (last March) that he's still finalizing the design for the new one as he doesn't have a new G27 to test on, and he's still searching for one to volunteer his unit to test his design.
