G27 Shifting

I just bought a Logitech G27 steering wheel. I love the wheel but GT5 ignores my gear shifting. Its like I'm stuck in automatic transmission mode. I clicked on the G27 on the options tab of GT5 but it hasn't made any difference. GT5 recognizes the buttons on the gear shift controller but not the actual shifting with the stick and clutch.
Is there something I'm overlooking?

(Incidentally, on the setup for the G27, it shows L1 on the left side of the wheel as shift down and R1 on the right side as shift up. How do you activate one side of the wheel to shift up or down? There doesn't seem to be anything to press.)

Thanks,

Anytime you are ready to start any race, you have an icon that allows you to change between Auto and Manual transmission (and set tcs etc). Verify you have chosen Manual trans. Then you can shift to your hearts content.

It's a problem virtually every H-shifter user is experiencing: https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=264962

This.

Just make sure to push the clutch all the way down, & make sure you're all the way off the throttle before you shift. GT5 doesn't allow power shifting, very stupid I know, but it is what it is. You'll get used to it like most people do, & like most you'll probably avoid using the clutch & shifter for serious racing, using the paddles instead.
