Greetings! Sorry, yet another G27 thread.

This is a request by me for any Logitech G27 owner to perform a very simple test of their hardware and let me know what you find.

I noticed a little bit of play in my G27 steering wheel and I'm not sure if it has always been there or if it's from my buddy lifting himself out of my rig by the wheel :irked: Of course, now I think I'm hearing things in addition to feeling something.

Issue: The wheel tilts back and forth slightly - see the pic.

To test your wheel: Grab the rim at 12 o'clock and without turning it, pull back/push forward repeatedly with moderate pressure (doesn't take a lot - don't break your wheel!) Listen for a knock as it moves and watch to see if the gap behind the wheel (see pic again) opens or closes much. My wheel has maybe a little over 1/8" play total - that's relative movement of the rim of the wheel at 12 o'clock. It's just enough to be noticeable but is probably normal if other peoples' do the same thing. Please give your wheel a tug and let me know if you find anything (lol that sounds good)

Thanks!

do all your wheels shake violently when driving the f1 on a straight in 6th gear?cause mine does, I just want to know if that's normal

Yea but only when the wheel's in just the right spot and I'm not gripping it firmly. It's pretty much normal.

Does your wheel wobble as described in my OP??

Ironically, this is somewhat similar to the problem I had with my G25. Only in my case it had play side to side like this, not up and down. In my case, I initially assumed it was from 14 months of hard use, playing games with the FFB on high. I eventually opened the wheel and found that the plastic housing it sits in was cracked. And there were several shards and pieces that had splintered off and fell out when I removed the lid. So I now realize, either it was the result of a defect that was there from the beginning on got worse over time or somebody was using the wheel as a grab handle, getting in and out of my rig, although I can't be certain.

This is actually why I'm using a G27 now. The old wheel still works although it feels very imprecise and I assumed eventually, after a lot of wear and tear, it would only get worse.

In my case, as soon as I removed the wheel from my rig, I knew there was a problem because I could hear the broken shards moving around inside the housing.

I have a g25 and its inner casing cracked too. I used jb weld to glue it back together.

Shake your wheel like a gift at christmas, oops I ment gently. If you hear things rattling around you might have the infamous cracked housing.

This casing / housing is what locates and holds the wheel in place. So if it's cracked that would explain the wobble you're experiencing.

:odd: Hmmm, is this actually a common problem? Or perhaps slowly becoming a common problem? When this happened to mine (I'm not sure when I first noticed it but it did seem to get slowly worse over time) it was a few months out of warranty. I figured I would try and open it, assuming it might have been a loose bolt inside. But as soon as I heard the rattling sound I knew it wasn't good. I didn't bother trying to glue it, but instead went back to Logitech, explaining exactly what happened. After more than a dozen emails back and forth they actually agreed to honor the warranty, even though it was several months expired, and I was told as soon as they had more wheel units in stock, they would send me a replacement. Yesterday they sent an updated email telling me they made a mistake and since it was out of warranty they couldn't (or wouldn't) honor it.

I wasn't very happy because I didn't try to hide the fact that it was more than a year old. In fact, I specifically mentioned this in my initial email to them and I had contacted Logitech only to find out if they had some sort of repair service. They were the ones who offered to replace it, the only caveat being that they were out of stock and it would take about 2 months before they had more available. The hoops I had to jump through was a bit numbing. A copy of the box UPC, the original copy of my purchase order, the receipt, the credit card statement, the shipping label. Then they couldn't read the attachment, change the format, still not good, changed to PDF, still no good. I finally faxed it. (The irony). And in a follow-up email, I even again confirmed that I was very happy that they were honoring the warranty when it had EXPIRED.

I wonder now if this is becoming an issue with G25s and my replacement was now denied as a result of too many subsequent claims.

In the meantime, I have a G27, which I find a comfortable improvement and I have the G25 as a back-up spare if I'm ever on the road. But it's a little disappointing to think that this could easily happen to the G27 as well. My wheel was well used, but never absued (at least not under my care).

Well the fact that you've experienced this problem is a good indication of the prevalance of this problem. Infamous is probably the wrong term to describe it, sorry i'm just bitter I guess.

I knew nothing of this issue until it happened to mine, at which point I searched around on the internet and found quite a few topics in forums regarding this cracked housing.

As for most things that you dont notice, once you start to take notice of something, all of a sudded it seem to be everywhere.

And this has what to do with Prologue?

Moving...

Makes sense, thanks.

I took down my rig today (moving, hooray.) I shook the wheel around and so on, definitely in one piece. I think it's fine at this point, all play seems natural.

Another buddy of mine hoisted himself up with it yesterday and it went flying, but was definitely unharmed. Meh, we'll see how it does. NO MORE of my buddies allowed in the rig, I'm sorry to say.

Here is a video I took trying to show you the play in my G27.

Thanks man. Yea, I think it's pretty much normal. It would be nice if everything was super tight and solid, but I think you get a lot as it is for ~$300 with the G27.

Mine is about a month old and has a slight bit of this going on, along with a clunky noise that has appeared when you move it from side to side at the middle point, no doubt from the violent beating that ferrari virtual academy's FFB does when you lock up the brakes.
