I can't seem to figure it out. It calibrates correctly on ps3 startup on the xmb (resistance start is equal when turning in both directions) then when I start up gt6, the wheel calibrates again. This is where the problem begins. When turning the wheel left there is little to no resistance until about 60° in that direction. When I return it to center and steer to the right, its nearly instant. Also, when turning the wheel to lock (turning right) about 10° before full lock, ALOT of resistance is encountered and then is surpassed with a little more pressure. This also happens while playing the game.

I've tried unplugging and replugging both at xmb and during play. Still wonky while in game. What do ya'll think is the issue? Again, it calibrates correctly at xmb. The two pictures above represent when resistance is first felt in the respective directions.

That is an odd issue. Do you have any other racing games to test this out on?

I sort of sounds like your optical encoder wheel might be loose, but if it were your wheel wouldn't stay centered properly (it would pull to the left or right). But again it doesn't sound like that's the issue.

I guess a weak motor could potentially cause something like this.

As for the resistance you feel near full lock that is normal, its called a soft lock. The force feedback acts as a cushion to prevent you from hitting the stopper, but if its only active on one side that might lend itself to the weak motor theory.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but I'll try gt5. I'm just baffled as to why its functioning in such a way while in the game vs being on the xmb because as I stated in the original post, the rate and strength of resistance when on xmb is the same in either direction. Maybe I need to update the driver? I've read about the encoder issue and the angle of the the wheel in the pictures (to me anyway) doesn't reflect what I'm seeing. I've heard of a few degrees past what the motors need in order to not work against each other but my case is extreme. Will report my findings.

How long have you had the wheel? Just for the sake of some background info

Its definitely odd, I can say that the XMB calibrates the wheel differently than games do, GT5 and GT6 are slightly slower. So there is software for each in charge of the calibration. I would also be curious to see how the wheel acts on a different PS3 if possible.

I know this probably wont help but double check all of the plugs on the bottom of the wheel, make sure they're all tight.

Alright scratch all that. I'm an ass. This is what it looks like on xmb. Had the wheel about a year now (refurb). Photo left is meeting resistance right while the other is meeting resistance left. And just for ***** and giggles, tried gt5 same issue as gt6.

Ok, refurbished leads me to beleive they may not have assembled it properly. I've taken mine apart many a times and there is a gear that needs to be perfectly centered in relation to another gear (its a rack). If its put together 1 tooth off your center will be offset to the right or left.

If this is the case this is something you can fix yourself if you dont mind opening it up. Or maybe there's a warranty on it?

When you're driving straight is your wheel straight?

Nevermind, got brave and took it apart and the encoder wheel has a half moon crack in it with one side reaching all the way to the middle where the motor shaft goes through. Here's your sign lol

Thanks for the help grog. Now just have to painfully wait for the brass encoder to come in. Might do a shift light mod too  I'll remember the steering rack to wheel alignment as well. I'm also gonna put some lithium grease on the rack slide and bend rack spring a little for super smooth steering 👍
