My Dad always likes to call me whenever he sees some story on the news about video games. I usually try and watch it because I like to see how the main stream media twists our hobby into a perverted pastime for violent whack jobs. He called me tonight and told me I should switch to CBS because 60 minutes was doing a segment about games. When he called I was a few missions into Medal of Honor on the PS2 (I have been watching the Band of Brothers DVD's). I thought for a moment about watching old men talk about video games or continuing to struggle with the terrible controls of MOHF. I ended up flipping over to CBS just in time to hear them announce that they were at Acclaim Entertainment. I then watched the ancient correspondent from 60 minutes questioning Ben Fischbach from Acclaim about BMX XXX. It was like the whole thing was happening in slow motion. "So, (in BMX XXX) you look at Strippers?" the white haired news man asks. "Well you're looking at a woman dance on screen for a very short period of time." says the middle-aged hipster who thinks his company is still relevant. "You look at strippers." asserts the decrepit reporter from a bygone era. "Ya, you look at strippers." concedes the despicable huckster from Acclaim. I imagined all the old people sitting on their plastic covered couches at home, watching this exchange and shaking their heads in disgust as their antiquated views on videogames were reinforced. I watched on as Mr. Fishbach opened his mouth again and this little nugget fell out:

"We wanted to create an entertainment experience on par with things like "Sopranos" or even "Sex and the City."

Let's all just take a minute to reflect on that one.

He didn't even laugh after he said it. The man was one hundred percent serious. It boggles the mind doesn't it? I don't know how he can actually stand up on national television and compare BMX XXX to something like the Sopranos. Especially when there are games like Vice City that actually do deliver stories that are on par with the shows he mentioned. Why couldn't 60 minutes have talked to Rockstar for Gods sake? Instead we get an interview with a man who thinks showing boobies in a game should snare him an Emmy. It's just ****ing sad.

So then they switch gears and start talking to Will Wright and a few other people from EA about the Sims online. Will is a smart mother ****er and he knows how to handle an interview. The segment was actually really good and just when I thought games and gamers were gonna come out looking pretty normal, some fifty year old EA big wig announces to the viewing audience that when he plays the Sims he likes to pretend he's a nineteen year old waitress.

Jesus

You can't see me right now but I am rubbing my temples.

I've highlighted the jewels from this section. Some people are just stupid. And the rest of the world only has eyes for them.

Still, I laughed really damn hard (even drooled on my desk) at this writing. But then I thought about the predictable impact it will have on games in the future and it really got me pissed off.

Hahah, thats pretty funny about the will wright thing.

I read the whole thing and cant believe that 60 minutes is still on. You do realise the reason they had that stupid ass from acclaim on there was because 60 mins wanted to diss the gaming community. Its the same with will wright. They're trying to turn the world against video games.. You just have to read between the lines.

...You drooled on your desk, LM? Wtf? :reallyodd

The videogame industry is worth more than $5 billion dollars, it can't be stopped. Of course they will try to tarnish it, it gets ratings for 60 Minutes and that's all they care about.

yea they've been having all of this crap on TV lately. They showed GTA3 and 4, claiming that "you have sex with women in it" although they don't show anything.

My mom said "I didn't know that stuff was in it" and I had to explain that the game is fine for people that don't take it seriously.

Then on Dateline they had a thing about selling M rated games to people under 17. GTA was one that they tried, and a lot of the places sold the games to kids that were 12. I bought both GTAs on my own at Best Buy(well, GTA3 was with my parents but I handed over the money and such) and they sold them to me no problem.

And that thing that 60 mins had about the Sims was pure stupid. It was more of an advertizing ploy than a legit story. Same with the base ball game that they had.

I think people should stop looking down on games. Look at the plus side, it keeps kids from doing crimes and going out on the street.

I watched the Dateline thing. I thought they did a pretty good job for the most part, stating that rated M games are meant for adults 17 and over.

Personally, I'm not against legal action to require ID checks when purchasing "M" games.

I saw it, it said the Video game industry is a lot bigger than the movie industry....so all those times your parents said, video games are just plain stupid , throw that fact in there face and see what happens

But, what the media is trying to convince us of is just that. They are saying that kids who play violent games are bound to reenact the violence in the real world.

My opinion: BLAME THE PARENTS, NOT THE KIDS!!

More people play video games than watch 60 minutes. It's common for one medium to go after another in a desperate attempt to save itself. Any time these show attempt to talk about pop culture it's just palin embarassing.

I think many parents are just lazy. They don't want to be reminded of their failure to raise their kids well.

Parent: You have sex with women in the game?!
Kid: Ummm... in a manner of speaking, yeah. But don't worry mom. I much prefer having real sex with so-and-so right there on the couch while you're still at work.

They don't want to be reminded that their kids go through the same things they did. The don't want to be shown that they are doing an even worse job than their own parents did.

They are all mob.

That's because they are talking about something that they have no knowledge of, let alone the fact that the media will cut and paste just as you would with PhotoShop.

Aye, that's what I feel when I listen to the occasional radio talk show. Utter trash...those souls have rarely an intelligent thing to say about the internet.

It's so sad to see one dying medium take cheap shots at another. Go out gracefully.

Well,no. I say blame the kid. It is the kid that can't controll their emotions and the kid that doesn't know the difference between a video game and real life that goes out and kills someone because they can "Do it in the game and not get in trouble". Or, "I can go have "sex" with someone because I can do it in a video game and they won't get pregnant." Now, I'm only 14 but my mom still lets me play GTA and GTA:VC because she knows me and she can trust me that I know the difference between video games and real life. I'm not going to go out and kill someone tomorrow because i just killed someone in VIce City about 10 minutes. And I'm not gonna go out and have sex with the first slut i see walking the streets just because I can do it in GTA and GTA:VC.

That's why I say blame the kids!

The parents should be the ones teaching the kids these things. If they have been raised half decently they should know the difference between reality and games without needing to be told. Thats why its the parents fault.

True. It is partly the parents fault for letting their kids play the games in the first place.

Ah, but again it's not the game's fault now is it? People depend on someone to guide them and at some point the guidance is supposed to have laid a foundation for moral decision making in the "kid."

Wait... that's not... no it couldn't be... Family Values?!

No, it is not the games fault. Like I said before, it is the kids that don't know the difference between video games and real life.

Kid aren't stupid these days. If you raise a kid right, he'll just play the game and nothing will happen. It's not like a person will never hear a curse word or see a women half-naked. It's society today.

I mean, come on. Pull your head from your ass. Even if there was some law passed, i would just use my 18 year old brother to buy M games. Most of the time T games or lower are not really good enough.

It's fun controlling stuff, even if you're doing something wrong when you do. And that's been engraved into all humanity's minds.
