Hi all,

As you may know, I have just built a new machine (as seen here).

I want some games that will demonstrate the power of the new machine. I'm going to get Bioshock and possibly Crysis (although that will have a hard time).

What other games should I get that really show what this computer can do?

I'm mainly into FPS and Driving games.

I saw some of these newer games at a friend's house. Call of Duty 4 and the newest Soldier of Fortune game impressed me the most. Crysis was ok but I liked CoD4 much better.

Car games I'm not sure. NFS Carbon is cool if you like the series, graphics are good. On the sim side I think Race'07 was the latest release.

Oblivion is still one of the better games I've played, it's both entertaining and looks great on a high end computer. There is also FSX which will really look good on an awesome machine.

Team Fortress 2 is best online multiplayer FPS ever. Get the Orange Box. It's not that graphically intense, but the gameplay more than makes up for it (the graphics are still really good, though, just not as intense as Crysis or Bioshock)

Colin McRae's Dirt is my pick for racing game of the year 2007

+1 on Meno's suggestion. Team Fortress 2 is great. We should get a GTP match going as well. ;)

However, been a while since I played TF2 or CS:S. Zombie Master has kind of consumed my time along with GTR2. :)

Graphically, I expected more out of BioShock, great game though. Crysis is the most graphically intense game on the shelf today. I wouldn't deny that experience even if the game play is questionable. I found the game quite entertaining and more so marveled at the graphical eye candy on environmental interaction of the physics engine in the game. Unfortunately, Crysis has set the graphical bar quite high making other games disappointing to me. Haven't played the latest SOF. Race07 is OK, COD:4 was buggy for me. Found out that FSAA was causing a Full Screen bloom effect, but runs great at 1920x1200 everything maxed.

Since you are mostly into FPS shooters and Driving games.. why not try something new?

Get some good RTS and RPGs
A good RTS to test your PC would have to be Company Of heroes and Company of Heroes Opposing fronts. Both games are really good, you will be blown away, fast action, lots of action, ragdol physics.. destructible environments, great campaign based on true events. The game wont allow you to build 100 troops but there is always action, but the system is really clever and will keep you coming back for more.

Also another one to test your PCs limits is Supreme Commander ( there is also an expansion for that, but I haven't got it yet) Basically its an RTS of the year along with Company Of Heroes. Game has HUGE maps, and you can build up to 1000 units per side.. Lets see if your PC can handle that :)

For an RPGs.. hmmm
Only one I play is The Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion Game of the Year Edition, sure its a older game, but it will take a bite out of your PC. It is really easy to get into, and you have to play game in First person Perspective, so it will remind you of shooters, but instead of GUNS you have fireballs, blades, arrows, and what not :)
This is a great game, but when you MOD it its even GREATER.
In this game, you don't have to fallow the story line... do whatever you wish.. and by the time you get lost in a BEAUTIFUL HUGE world you will remeber that you have a story line ;). Thats what good about this game, its non lineal, You can stop main quests at any time, and come back later for them. There are also Hundreds of individual AI's characters. Each thinks whey they need to eat, sleep, go to temples, and even hunt or work. The game is just huge, and now its about 30 or 40 dollars for Game Of the Year edition which includes all the expansion packs, all in one box.
Only bad part about this game is the easiness.. as easy as Gears of War, or any other easy games, but it will take at least 40 Hours of your time, but can go up to 200 :)
So i recommend MODS for this game,,, OOO and MMM adds Hundreds of Monsters, many new quests, and weapons, And gameplay.. It will be tougher, since in vanilla game, once you Level up, everyone levels up with you, so its too easy. But With OOO every one has his own level so it will be tougher. OOO and MMM also have many tweaks and makes gameplay more fun.. Also DL Natural Environments Mod which adds a lot better looking world and weather system. There are also thousands of other great mods.

Sorry for writing that much, well thats how the game is great.

RTS games are good point. World In Conflict show cases DX10 and will tax your system with particle smoke, full world physics, and realtime atmospheric changes.

What is OOO and MMM? I still play Oblivion from time to time and with some different content I probably could get back into it.

Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul
OOO

Martigen's Monster Mod
MMM

OOO

I think the OOO is better then MMM but if you fallow the instructions, You can make the OOO and MMM mods work together without any problems, So be sure you get the right versions at right order.

I think for now, you will be good with just the OOO mod, it basically adds new weapons, missions, costumes, enemies, monsters... And the most important thing is that it removes LEVEL scaling. So each person and monster has his own Level, At around Level 10 you will be able to have fun, but you will always have to watch out for higher levels then you ;)

Oh and by the way, Download Natural Environments mod.. It will make the game much more prettier, bigger Trees, and more natural looking bushes and weather.. adds some birds in the sky that you can look at and bugs :P

I will definitely be getting the Orange Box, and most likely CoD4 now. RPG's are not my thing but I was a massive fan of Command & Conquer so I might look into some RTS games.

Some people like the new Command n Conquer game.. I just could never got into it.. I think you need to try it before buying it.. After all, game was made for Xbox and PC, so the game does not feel like a PC game..

Hmm, just thinking of Oblivion wants me to reinstall it and play again. :)

Oh there is also a good RTS, World in Conflict. The camera controls is just like First Person Shooter, so you can view your strategy war at any angle you wish, but that game is only good for Multilayer its really easy to get into and addicting like a First person shooter. Story line is ok, but its all about Multiplayer, In MP, you take role of one out of 4 roles, you have your infinarry, tanks, support weapons, and helicopters. Its good, check out the demo, you might like it more then the new CnC game :).

If you're into role playing games, you might check out 'The Witcher'. It's somewhat like Dungeon Siege but more refined. The interface is solid, mature storyline, plenty of side quests to keep you busy. I seem to remember a writeup in the recommendations forum. Graphically it's fun to look at. Different times of day presents a whole new landscape for the scene. With my lack of time, what seems to be a smaller game in scope as compared to Oblivion, I enjoy just getting into the game knowing I won't have to invest my life to complete the game. For what it's worth, I had to disable my SLI for this game as it was buggy on dual cards, but I have everything maxed out on my single 8800 and it runs great!

Ahh That game is great, and makes me proud to be Polish ;) hehe

but I have vista and keeps crushing on me, the game is on the shelve collecting dust.. :( any new patches came out?

There is this Great game coming out this month, Codename Panzers: Cold War

I did find a fix, currently running on Vista with no crashes (after fix). Is your video card supporting greater than 512mb ram?

Get the latest patch, 1.2 I think. I have the fix I applied booked marked at home, I'll try to provide you with that later tonight.

I think I'm going to have to get "The Witcher", it looks pretty cool.

Here's the fix that worked for me:

If your game is regularly crashing with 32-bit Vista (this does NOT apply to 64-bit Vista):

From the Windows command line: BCDEDIT /set IncreaseUserVa 2800
Then you must reboot your computer.
Then start Witcher and see if you crash anymore.

For those who want an explanation before blindly trying it:

The Witcher executable is a 32-bit app compiled with "large address awareness", what this means is that the maximum amount of address space it can make use of is:
On 64-bit Vista: 4GB
On 32-bit Vista: whatever IncreaseUserVa is set to (defaults to 2048MB)
(Note: address space doesn't necessarily equate to real memory used, so I'm not saying that The Witcher actually makes use of >2GB RAM)

Note: the valid values for IncreaseUserVa are 2048 to 3072, if 2800 doesn't work for you, you could try a higher (or lower) number. Higher number might be needed especially if you have a video card with a lot of memory on it (>512MB). If you have problems you can always boot in safe mode and change it back to a lower value, or the normal 2048.

Also note: I would recommend switching this parameter back to the default of 2048 once you're done with The Witcher. There are good reasons that Microsoft has it set at 2048 for normal purposes.

Here's the fix that worked for me:

Ahh thanks, I was just reading something simular
I have over 1.2 Gigs of Video memory so I'm set.

I don't think its the ram or video ram memory, but ill see if it works..

I'll reinstall the game this weekend and patch it up again,
Its going to be a fun few weeks playing the games if it does not crash again *hold thumbs* and wait up for US Spec II GT5P

I just bought the gold edition of Company of Heroes for 30 bucks 👍 It's the 1st RTS I've bought in around 10 or 12 years, and I've never really been into RTS games, but this is a blast, literally. I was a bit surprised at the level of detail. The game looks and plays great on my new rig. The Multiplayer is fun, but it is a bit buggy. I cannot connect to some people, even though I have proxies set up as instructed. I like the ability to save replays of the battle and watch it over. pausing and zooming in on the carnage. 👍

^Yeah I had the demo installed here, the game is awesome but I had to turn the graphics down a lot to be able to play it. I might buy it next year when I get a decent computer.

I highly recommend:
Black and White 2. The gameplay is very fun, the graphics are great, 3d water effects, a creature you control that can be trained, and the game can get massive as you progress. You can even get up to several hundred soldiers. This game will really push your PC on the highest settings. You can zoom all the way our or all the way in so close you can see ants. Here is a thread I made with a lot of pics from the game. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=80142&highlight=Black+white+2

Age Of Empires 3 is my favorite RTS game. See pics here. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=71970&highlight=age+of+empires+3

Far Cry is another game that pushes the console pretty hard on the highest settings and looks beautiful. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=80113&highlight=pics
