Please ask
I have been playing GT5 on my son's PS3. I have untold hours invested in my game. I will be getting my own PS3 for my birthday. Is there any way to get my game save data from my son's PS3 to my new PS3? I have been playing logged in to his PSN account.

I have searched the internet and it seems that some sort of hacking must be involved. I hope that this is not true. I have read that each account has some unique identifier and there is some sort of security on the PS3. It will really p!$$ me off if I have to start over. I may not even buy the PS3 at all if this is the case. I am at level 35 A-Spec & level 34 B-Spec. Just today I finally managed to get the 2J Chapparal to do the B-Spec seasonal event at Sarthe.

I apologize if this is a duplicate thread. I searched before I posted but couldn't seem to find what I was looking for. I have sent a message to Playstation support but figured I would get a better and quicker response from the people here.

You can try a flash drive with the saved game data. But I haven't tried this so I don't know if it would actually works. You can try it yourself to see if it works.

You can just copy the save data to a thumb drive. When you get the new PS3, do all the updates then copy the save data from the thumb drive to the PS3 save data folder. As far as being different PSN accounts Im not sure as I have only used mine. You could always just use his PSN and make your son a new one.

1. Save your GT5 game save data (and whatever other game saves you want to transfer) to a thumbdrive.
2. When getting the new PS3, set it up so that the PSN account you used on the first PS3 is on the 2nd PS3.
3. Wait for system to finish updating.
4. Copy saved data over.

Yes as long as you sign onto your sons name on the new ps3. You can save it to a usb thumb drive and be fine.

Give your son the new PS3 and take the one with your GT5. You might be able to transfer his save data easier, unless he has a GT5 save. If this is a problem also you could ask for help for some of the things you lose. I'd be more than willing to gift you some cars and other things to get you going. Doing the seasonal events will get you up to level 35 in no time with the 200% bonus. PM me if you need help.

Why would you invest that much time in a game using someone else's account instead of your own? That seems strange to me. Not sure how to transfer a game in that situation.

I contacted Sony Customer Support. Their reply is to use the Data Utility Transfer. It must be done using an ethernet cable from one PS3 to the other PS3. It deletes the save data that you select from the origin PS3. I still have to put in a call to get specifics clarified. I will post their answers when I am satisfied with their answers.

To CDJWAs to why I was playing on my son's PS3. I am on Social Security Disability. When they first came out GT5 was still a mystery as to when it would be released. I don't have momma and daddy's money to buy one nor do I have enough extra income. I have been saving little bits here and there to get the basic 160GB console. Now if some of you well to doers would like to donate one I would be happy to receive it. Let me know and I'll give you my address.

To the rest: Thank you for you attempts to help. I also apologize if the above comment offends anyone else.

Further udate. Per Sony even the Data Transfer will have my son's info transfered to my new PS3 and he will loose all his data. They would not confirm that I could back up his data and restore it back to his PS3.

I am seriously now having 2nd thoughts about spending the money for the new PS3. I will pursue the hack mode. If I can find a way to hack my PS3 to get my game data then I will buy. I am too old and extremely frustrated with this whole thing. I have many meds I have to take just to maintain day to day life. I am at lvl 36 A-Spec, lvl 35 B-Spec, have 19,833,750 credits and over 250 cars without a single loss in either A-Spec or B-Spec. I haven't been able to pass the 2 lap test in I-C because of the frustration. I play to eliminate frustration not to make it worse. Thanks to all that have made offers. If I do I'll come back to this post.

I don't see the point, but to transfer a savefile, do the following:

Stuff you need to know/have before you do this:
* USB stick
* The PSN login credentials of the user who you want to copy the GT5 savegame

Now you do this: (copy the GT5 file)
- You have to have a USB stick, in one of the from USB entries in your PS3.
- Make sure you are in main menu of the <user the data has to copied from> go to Game menu, go to Helpprogram for saves for PS3, open it. Press square, on the GT5 savefile, and select copy, choose the USB drive, select OK. (gamefile is now copied on the USB drive!)

Stuff you need to do to get the GT5 file running on a 2nd PS3: (copy the GT5 backup from USB > PS3)
- Create the same user name you already had on the first PS3.
- Go to PSN online and fill in the login credentials from <user the data is to copied from>
- when the login is ok (this is your son's login, on the new PS3!)
- put USB drive in, go to go to Game menu, go to Helpprogram for saves for PS3, open it. Go to USB drive, open that, Press square, on the GT5 savefile, and select copy, the PS3 system directly figures that you want to copy a gamefile from USB to this PS3, select OK. (gamefile is now copied on the PS3!)

Start GT5, and enjoy.
Important: in the above explanaition you see that you need the same account, and login credentials for PSN, you copied the data from, on the new system, else it will not work.

This how it's done, good luck.

I thought that it was only the account name on the PS3 system that had to be the same, and that you didn't need to use the same PSN account? If you do need it you can still just have two different user accounts on the same PS3 with different PSN accounts.

Don't do what Sony says, they're just giving you a generic answer. You absolutely do NOT need to use the data transfer utility. Just copy the save file from one PS3 to the other as described by goukipau(still not sure if PSN account matters). Actually using the backup utility would work just as well in this case as the data transfer utility and would not delete anything from your son's PS3. The GT5 savegame is not copy-protected, unless perhaps you have a very old unpatched version of GT5. But either of those options would copy far more than you need to copy(the whole system).

All you need to copy is the save file which is only about 2MB(I think it grows as you play actually, so it may be bigger). Your money, progress, and cars are all stored in there. You will not be able to copy photos or replays or custom tracks this way. If you really really want to: Replays can be exported and copied manually. Photos can be exported as well, so you can get the pictures moved but there is no way to re-import them to GT5. Tracks can be shared one at a time and downloaded by other GT5 players but that probably wouldn't work if you are both using the same PSN account... you would need a second account to act as an intermediary.

the account name has to be the same, but you must enlist in PSN, with the same credentials the GT5 savefile (PSN credentials) came from, else it won't work.
I tested it myself, I got someones savefile, and made a new account on my PS3, copied the savefile, but didnt work... Then I asked for his login PSN credentials and after I got those and logged in, then the savefile worked!

Racin: I didn't say to buy a new PS3. What I was saying was why didn't you create your own account to play the game on your son's PS3. You would have had your own account linked to your save and when you DID decide to buy another console you would have had no problem moving your game save.

I think you guys are missing the point here...
1)He's played GT5 using his SON'S account.
2)He MUST login using his SON'S account details for the saved data to work.
3)His son can no longer login to his original account as the "father" is logged into it using the "new" ps3.

My point is why would you invest that much time in a game like GT5 using ANYONE ELSE'S account when it only takes minutes to make your own on the same machine. I don't get it.

So you used your sons account to play GT5.
Now you want to have that save on your own PSN account.
Its copying of a GT5 file to another PSN, and
it's not possible (legally), I do not know whether it is possible with other methods, but I can assure you, those illegal methods won't be approved on this forum.

The only way I can see here, is to keep using your son's account and when your son wants to play on the other PS3, you have to not let him login on PSN, whereas 2 same PSN accounts cannot be logged in at the same time. (but im pretty sure you do not want this, else you wouldnt have come with the question...)

Because he's probably not the avid GT'er that came in here ages ago to find out the game save was tied to the original PSNID.

Why continue to be an *** to this guy? He didn't ask wether or not you get it. He asked for help.

Thanks, clears that up.

Probably no way around the PSN conflict then. Just have to either only go online one at a time or make a new PSN name for one of the PS3s that will have to start GT5 from scratch.

To dirt1008, parabulla & goukipau: Thank you!

To CDJW: Since never owning a PS3 I did not know about the seperate account. Both my son and I started the game together on his PS3. I found GT Planet in a google search. My son is into fighting/death/destruction games and only races every so often. So the GT5 game is 98% my efforts. That is why I invested the time. I didn't expect that I would have this issue and what made me save to get my own. I hope you understand now. If you lost your game data would you relish the thought of having to start from scratch again? If all else fails I will just won't enjoy it not after having spent $250 for a new PS3 and having to buy all the DLC all over again.

It stinks that you can't use your save but the icon to create another account on your PS3 is literally one of the first icons you see when it starts up. I think inquiring with Sony would be your only option, but I'm not sure they could even help with that one. It's too bad there wasn't an option to do a one way permanent name switch in emergency cases though. You would be able to use all your DLC on your son's PS3 if you do start over under a new account. You just install the sharing options from the PS3 Store for free. If you start new, let me know what some of your favorite cars were and if they're tradable I could send you some when I get the chance. I also have level tickets you could use to get pricier cars that can't be traded. Don't forget that you can also send your cars and items from your son's account where your save is to your new account and PS3 (or son's PS3). One car per day trade and 5 of each item (paint, suits, parts etc.).
