Gamespot finally releases their review for GT5P.

http://au.gamespot.com/ps3/driving/granturismo5prologue/review.html?tag=topslot;title;1

As usual, being a PS3 game, score is low, Gamespot giving it 7.5 listing the following:

Pros:
Technical work of art
Varied lineup of vehicles
Brings 16-player online racing to Gran Turismo

Cons:
Not nearly enough tracks
Only a prologue to the real thing
Online suffers lag at times
No option to upgrade vehicle parts.

They also criticise the in-car view, saying the view is too cluttered, and does not offer a good view of the track. Also criticised is the lack of Lamborghinis, Porsches and damage.

They've obviously never sat in a racecar.

They've got one thing wrong: the ideal race line is present since the first GT, but it's the first time that you can turn it on during a race :)

Gamespot is a tremendous waste of time.

Actually all of the reviews I have read have been in the low 8's and have had the same cons. Lack of tracks? No upgrades? Prologue is equivalent to reading the twenty page foreword to a thousand page book! What do these people expect?

Oh, and the in-car view being "too cluttered"? You know Gamespot, you're right. From now on I'm going to strap myself to the front bumper of my car so I can get a better view of the road when I drive to work.

The only problem I have is with people who CANNOT drive online! When someone is passing you your first instinct should not be to cut your wheel and drive the guy into the wall!!!! Grow up people!

Overall, the review seems like a pretty fair summary of the pluses & minuses of GT5P. Does seem unfair to criticize the in-car view, however, which is superbly done IMO.

Agreed. I was worried that it would be hard to drive on the inside view as I find it hard to do so in some other racing games, but they got it spot on. Your view is EXACTLY what it would be if you were sitting in the car, I'm not sure how Gamespot can fault that.

My problem is everyone seems to be reviewing GT5P as though it is the final version of the game (I know it's $40 and people should make informed purchases). I never owned GT4P but from what I remember it had much, much less to offer than GT5P. If anything PD should be judged by what they released in previous Prologues not what people think PD should have released this time.

All in all, I'm having a great time with it. My expectations have been met. I played so long last night my feet swelled (DFP and no breaks). I got road rage (online Beginner events ARGHHHH!!!) and I sat and just revved my Viper to listen to the engine note (you know, like the Porsche commercial). It's all good and I know it's just going to get better.

After reading through the whole review and playing the game myself I think I understand Gamespot.

1) They do not know how to drive or know anything about racing. We've all seen their demo videos.

2) They don't understand racing and cars. They make a complaint about not understanding why you would have slower cars, like the Cappuccino. Boy, they would really be thrown off if they saw half my GT4 races that I set up for myself. There are plenty of real-life races that don't involve supercars. Gamespot seems to be of the impression that the only good cars for a racing game are the ones that have 400+ horsepower.

good point.
nobody can judge PD for releasing prologue versions. if you dont want then dont buy it,simply. but I dislike game sites because they are reviewing this game and then say negative about why it has less track, less car bla bla bla.

I've had the Japanese version for awhile now, and it's so nice to finally read everything in English, plus the Beyond the Apex video (which I haven't actually watched yet).

However, I think PD has done a fantastic job with the interior race cam. I NEVER raced in the in car view in any other game because I couldn't see anything and it wasn't very innovative from the games I've played. No, I haven't played GTR or Live for Speed, but just some games I've played in the years past. In GT5p, I'm actually able to race in the interior cam without much of a problem at all. Yeah you can't see as much as in the bumper cam, but as someone else already mentioned, you can't see as much in real life in the interior compared to if you were able to view the road from your bumper. Common sense gamespot?!?!

I'm hazarding a guess that the reviewers text people while driving, too.

Can't fault them for being somewhat honest, though; you'd figure that companies that sell games would give every product a 9.5-10.0 rating, so they don't have to worry about extra inventory getting dusty.

Gamespot != GameStop. One is a gaming Web site and one is a retail chain.

And if anyone thinks this is bad read through some of the negative user reviews. Number one complaint found in the negative reviews: IT'S A DEMO AND THEY CHARGED ME $40 FOR IT!!!! WWWAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

And people wonder why Phill Harrion said that NA didn't get GT4P because they didn't want to confuse the audience.

Great!
Euh, which car has a mobile phone in it that will allow me to do this. I don't have all cars yet. :nervous:

:sly:
AMG.

I wouldn't quite agree with that: the in-car view is very restricted at the sides. It also completely eliminates peripheral vision - a problem, mind-you, shared by every other video game.

I think the 7.5 score is intended to reflect the fact that it isn't a full game. For the average (non-committed sim-racer), gamer it's a reasonable valuation of the $40 cost vs what you get for your money. That's different from the value to a die-hard GTplanet gamer, many of whom have already shelled out more than $40 for the JPN version, as well as handing over more for the English language version!

Yes but don't real race drivers have a lack of peripheral vision as well due to their helmets and HANS devices?

For cars equipped with HANS devices, yes, but they also have special three-way mirrors to assist the driver with the peripheral. Cockpit view is awesome and immersive in GT5:P, and is the only view I'll use... but it's far from perfect. Some cars make it challenging with the driver side mirror even being cut off. Combine that with extremely cramped overall views like the Viper, increased framerate issues as opposed to bumper-cam, and an overall "stiffness" due to a lack of driver head movement being reflected, and, well, there's work to be done by PD before GT5:Full.

Even so, I'm happy to never run bumper-cam in a racing game again, as everything I play now supports cockpit view. :)

I'm not criticizing the in-car view of GT5P - I think it's pretty impressive. Even if you had a RL view restricted by a helmet, the ability to easily move your head & eyes is something that video games just can't replicate at the minute (the motion-sickness inducing "sideways view" doesn't quite cut it IMO!)

Though I don't agree with the complete review, I do agree with the 7.5 mark. The AI and penalty system are pathetic. Also the cars are beautiful, but the tracks lack detail, except the backgrounds. Online is also very limited........but this is indeed a demo, so I'll forgive the game for it. But if this were the full game, I would give it a 6 at most, especially since PD claims this is 'The Real Driving Simulator', which clearly, it is not.
Still, I have had more fun with this 'demo' than with most full games, it definitely deserves credit for that! And it provides PD with the ability to iron out things like the AI and online system before the full version is released. I'll buy the full version when it's out, no question about it. And if they ever release GT6: Prologue, I'll probably buy it too! I think the prologues are still a lot of value for money.

I think the cockpit view is pretty amazing. Yes, we can't see as much road as in bumper cam but in a real car is the same way... In a race car is even worst with roll bar, transponders and so... The problem is that in a race car usually we don´t to undertake 15 cars on a lap...

But GT5P is just a prologue as is name tells, the price is almost half of a release game and even so has 71 distinctive cars, much more then many racing games and 7 races tracks, not so impressive number but pretty reasonable too.

Online racing needs some tune, yes, but let's get hope this can be a real life testing for an amazing online mode for GT5.

The criticism of the in-car view being cluttered is probably a reference to all the HUD elements that are scattered over the screen - including the track map being placed on top of where the rear view mirror usually is. I totally agree that it's too cluttered, and am disappointed that they haven't (yet?) included an option to simplify the HUD, take the track map off, or even the entire HUD.

This was criticised like it was a new full blown game. It's not so this review doesn't exist in my book. IGN got it on the spot, because they started out with the fact it's a Prologue. GT uses prologue with the true meaning of that word so go figure!

It wasn't the HUD, if you read the review tehy are saying that it's the dash, steering wheel, centre console, etc. which gives you a more restricted view. Sorry if my wording was off.
