Y'know, out of all the things that Gran Turismo has to offer as far as tuning and motorsports is concerned, there are a few things that should be added. At least, hopefully they will be.

Street Racing Syndicate, NFS: Underground 2 and Juiced all sport some serious garage options. Most notable of them are the obvious dynometer (Dyno). For what reason PD has never implemented this into their title is beyond me. First off, to complete the scope of a racing sim, this option should be added and should have a long time ago.

Being able to test out the torque and bhp of your well oiled vehicle is something that needs to be included. Not to mention the ability to even modify and tune your vehicles WITHIN the garage itself. Instead of say, what we're subjected to now: tuning before a race then having to re-exit back the home-garage. Very lame...

Also, if anyone knows, is this image of the new garage mode?

If so, then it would be eons better than just about every garage mode for any other racing title in recent memory. I sincerely hope that it isn't just a conceptual image. :indiff:

Other than that, I guess it's about it. Thanks everyone for the feedback. :)

That's just a Photo Mode image.. just a backdrop like any of the others.

In regards to your tuning wishes.. I'll simply point out that SRS, NFSU, and Juiced are a completely different type of "racing" game than GT. Custom-tailored to the "Fast and the Furious" crowd. In my opinion, that sort of thing has no place in GT.

Dynanometers are not for the FnF crowd... they probably don't know what a dyno is lol

I must admit GT might need a better front end for this sort of thing, a graphical garage is much cooler (a la PGR2) to check out than scrolling through a car list. Just my opinion...

I was merely pointing out that he was using decidely "arcade"-like games as a source for possible features for GT. Personally, I dislike everything about those types of street-racers, and the idea of any of their features making their way into GT sickens me.

Well, for one, the others are based on street racing. Just because the Fast and the Furious made it popular doesn't mean that they aren't credible racing titles (especially Juiced). Nevertheless, the dynometer is needed within GT4 and is an important component like any other.

Other than adding vinyls and bodykits, there's no difference between the tuning of GT and the other titles. The dyno is just as significant for this game as it is for theirs. Anyone upgrading and tuning their vehicles in reality use dynos; garages everywhere. Gran Turismo should NOT be any different. Especially if it is supposed to be a racing/driving/tuning simulation.

.....I still hope that the garage is the ACTUAL garage mode image.

Nah... that garage doesn't look like it could hold 1000 cars... :D

LOL. well the originals didn't look like they could hold 50-100 either. LOL.

Perhaps you could educate this non-tuner and explain why a dyno is such an important addition?

A dyno is pointless if you cant really tune your engine. I.E, Timing, bigger injectors, tuning a carburator, air filters........ect If you cant really tweak parts to gain or loose performance then a dyno is pointless to have since you will get the same stats as you do with the "known" HP figure for each part. The only thing I can really think of is the actual power and torque range of the engine.

Even if there are specifics that you won't be able to tune, such as timing, carburators, etc., having a dyno available within the garage not only saves time from running to the track for similar results, but modifications and upgrades/upgrade swaps can occur right then and there in the garage itself. Y'know, things that actually HAPPEN within the garage in the first place; its purpose entirely.

You can also test out bhp conditions under different tyres, ride heights etc. all within the garage's dyno. No matter how you look at it, having one is essential to the game. Again I say, especially if Gran Turismo is deemed a racing/tuner/driving sim that it is.

Regardless of how much I love it, this is a shining flaw that needs to be noted.

Just me with a small question, what do you have to do while on a dyno to measure the car's performance (like accelerating in a certain gear or what??)

Thank you :)

:) To get a graph of power and toruqe at the flywheel you need to perform a sweep of the rev range of the engine at full throttle under load. This is best done with the engine out on a test bed. Alternativey you can do it at the wheels and transmission losses can be calculated out to give you a flywheel figure.

Paul.

Although a Dyno would be good in GT4, it isnt needed as much as some may think.

Exaple: RACE cars

Race cars (from memory) DO NOT have a Dyno at race meetings, every team dont carry a mobile Dyno. Race cars will run afew laps of a track and come into the pits to play with setups then they are sent back out to test again. A Dyno is all good and well to tell you how much power and torque your ride is spinning, but with a RACING game it is useless coz you are racing all the time.
For the Drag mode it would be good but still it all comes down to setups, a Dyno will only allow you to setup for better power output, and allow you to even the amount of power through each gear.

Yes i want a Dyno, but there are other things i would kmuch rather see implemented into the game before it. I want the Bathurst Circuit, Online mode of course, Kits bought back in, Graphic intercoolers, exhausts and other such things, rim sizes. Aerodynamic Parts are whats needed the most at this point, and each should change how a car drives. You should be able to put a GT wing on the rear, and be able to adjust it in the settings for better downforce, rather than two downforce meter, one for front and one for rear.

seems like i remember a dyno-like graph from GT1 when you changed out parts or the boost on your turbo or something.

i think it really comes down to, how many aftermarket product manufactures & individual parts there are. I think this is key as far as a dyno is concerned

say for instance, if you were to have three camshaft manufactures offering camshafts that produced power in a variety of ranges, like in the real world. then i could see the benefit of a dyno. some would have peak high RPM power, & some would have a broader flatter power curve. i think that the output should also be affected by the other mods as well. if you don't have these variables, then it is pretty much a wash. assuming a cam will give 20hp with or without an intake & exhaust is dumb.
I really like the concept they had/have on "MotorcityOnline" with all the manufactures, parts & such. I never played it personally, but my buddy played religously. it was very indepth from the parts & tuning aspect. carbs, intake manifolds, valvespring, camshafts, pistons, etc... it goes on & on. these mods were all done individually, & not lumped together in a generic package. so the combination of certain parts from different manufactures yielded better results than others.

although, the true benefit of a dyno is the tuning. getting your HP/Torque #'s is great to know, but being able to tune the car is where the money is. the A/F ratio, timing, cam timing, etc... with the addition of each part, you should be able to dial it in. without being able to make any engine adjustments or determine a benefit or not from one part to another, makes having a dyno pretty much a waste of time

also, one of the few things i like about NFSU, is the fact that you can blow your engine. not that GT4 will show you blowing your engine, but if you had to come in & pit to fix it. like the damage in GT2, if you blew it, your car wouldn't go over like 5mph.
like in the case of, say you bought some 13:1 pistons & no injectors or fuel management.
or you set your rev limiter to 10k with no valvesprings or something like that.

although, i think that these types of things would be too in depth & a hard sell too the general public. but, i played Chase for the Cup the other day & i had my final drive set wrong, kept the revs coming, & blew it up. who knows?

That would be cool if you were drag racing and suddenly "POOF" tons of smoke comes out from under your hood cause you just blew an engine.

LOL!...yeah, and you had to pay additional credits for the rebuild. KY has said that there will be a finicial institution in the game to borrow money from for racing & modifications.
also, just like in the real world, usually camshafts have a big warning attached "must be used with our XXXXX valvesprings"
same would go in the game. you can run'em, just don't rev'em

Obviously for a circuit based racing game, a dyno isn't required. But I think everyone here is very aware that Gran Turismo since its incarnation is MUCH more than a simple circuit racer. Hence the reason *again* that I've mentioned why a dyno is so important.

Even import-tuner heads play GT....the audience diversity for the title is huge.

GT needs more thorough tuning options before getting a dyno to test them on.

generic upgrade kits got old in GT2. I hope they shook things up a bit in GT4

I must say I do miss those nice torque and horsepower graphs of GT 1 & 2, especially cause you were instantly able to see what gain or loss of power you'd get if you changed this or that part to another. As these curves are stored in the game anyway to define the car's behaviour, it'd be nice to see them again.

Concerning the dyno, I can understand that you really want one. But I've hardly seen any video of a dyno here in Europe, neither have I seen one from Japan. All the vids I know come from the USA, so it might well be there's no dyno in GT4 cause it just isn't as popular in Japan. And technically there's no need to have one, especially if the performance graphs come back. Anyway, it would be a nice gimmick I think.

Well, to me, GT isn't about the tuning.. it's a racing game, not a "tuning" game like NFSU. I'm perfectly happy running laps in purely stock vehicles. Seems that a dyno would only be useful to keep track of horsepower & torque changes. But since the specifics can't be altered (the "more thourough tuning options" that Kinigitt mentioned), it seems rather pointless. The part's either on or off.. here's the horsepower with it on, here's the horsepower when it's off. We've had that since GT1. And for those of us who don't know the first thing about fine-tuning an engine, the presence of a dyno would make no difference at all.

The options of tuning have somewhat decreased from GT1 down to GT3. In GT1 for example, you were actually able not only to put in different turbos, but to alter their boost as well. In the later parts, it was only "turbo" or "no turbo". Of course it's fun to go on the track with a stock car, but I really hope we get back some of those various tuning options.

Yeah. I don't think GT4 will have dyno graphs though. Maybe GT5.

You don't need the actual dyno test so much as you just need the curves. An actual dyno test environment would be pointless.

You don't need a lot of tuning options to make the power/torque curves useful. It's good to see the curves when tweaking gears and establishing shift points.

Yeah, GT4 needs that. 👍

to need a dyno, you'd need to have an engine building program like in the Bethesda drag racing game. Not the steaming pile they sell for the PS2 but the PC game. In that game you make your own cam profiles, change cam timing, change valve sizes, intakes, exausts, ect. and after every change you get a new power and torque curve graph. This is something i'd like to see incorperated into GT5.
Instead of a dyno in GT4 how about a skid pad? it'd be far more usefull than the dyno, what with the genaric mods allowed in GT.
