Ah, Ok. X makes sense. I notice in one of your earlier posts you make the case for making the pass mark 40%, but why is there currently a distinction between 0-11% and 12-17%?
 
Well, I said 25% (the so-called "monkey mark" on a multiple choice test. You have four options. Randomly choosing them, with no knowledge, should net you 25%), though degree subjects tend to be 40% for a pass.

As for the current demarcations, I have NO clue. F and G are wastes of space anyway - no-one regards anything less than an E as a pass, bar the official statisticians, and C is regarded as a passing grade in order to take a subject further. Perhaps they include F and G only to give a sense of acheivement to really stupid kids. After all, remember the Professional Teachers' Association's attempts to introduce a concept of "Deferred Success"? Failure is NOT an option - because they won't let you, no matter how enfeebled your brain is.

Yep, and that's not to mention that some university multiple choice exams have negative marking, penalising the monkey/guessing student. One of my classes from second year (Computer Architecture & Design) had negative marking in the class tests. Unlike most negative marking schemes (which are designed in order to award a mark of 0% if the monkey guesses the same answer all the time), these tests were awarded 2 marks for a correct answer and -1 for a wrong answer, which would give the monkey a negative score. Not exactly fair, IMO.

Right, that makes a bit more sense. I remember that deferred success crap. I'm glad it got shot down.

it's what people in the UK take just after they leave school. Im not sure what the American equivalent is. But theyre pretty damn important.

Give it a few years and you'll realise they're not really that important at all :)
 
I took my IT exam a year early and I've also got my Chemistry, Physics and Biology modular marks to pick up but since all my friends are on holiday and I don't feel like going up the school on my own I'll wait until I get back.

Actually Its probably a bit late now. >_>

I find what the media saying rather degrading, you work for those 2 years and for the weeks leading upto and during even harder only to get the results and say they were "easier". They need some serious reforming. What good is reading Shakespere to me...
Why was i not taught how to pay bills etc etc.. This is stuff Ive got to learn on my own. GCSE's I personally feel do not set you up for life.
 
Can people not post that sort of thing in here. We've all worked really hard for this and are really excited and you just come in here telling us that we dont need them or that theyre useless. Way to kick us in the teeth man.

I got average GCSE's (a few C's, 2 B' and a couple of D's), and did a GNVQ which I got a distinction for, I have never exelled in school because I never really wated to be there, in college when I did my GNVQ I chose to be there, I wanted to learn that subject. I wonder about where I'd be working if I pushed myself harder and got all A's and a degree ect and I doubt I'd be in the position I'm in now, which is a very good one.

edit: nevermind...you know, I have like no knowledge of school jobs and positions. Especially if the British system is as different as it sounds.
 
Congrats to eveyone! My results are being posted so I wont get them until tomorrow morning. I'll be back on then to let everyone know how I did.

I didn't do too well, but then I put in next to no effort. Despite my lower than average grades I'm in a position most people with top grades are in and the same goes with many of my friends. Just an opinion based on my own experiences as well as others, but I've yet to be in a position where my poor grades are a disadvantage 👍
 
All C's across the board.

Pass for GNVQ ICT 4gcses
C for maths english science social science

Boy im sure happy that GCSES are not important and basically just a way to round of school before most people leave.

They say that GCSES are easy but not for my school. The average kid got a E in my school but with the few smart ones I would say th average grade would be a D.

Luckily I never cared for the gcses anyway more of a waste of time.

Your a real jackass arent you, there are people who care and dont need idiots like you saying its not important when it blatantly is.

Average kid in my school was on Cs and one of my mates got several As and lots of Bs and hes not the smartest so with the smart ones average is easily over a B.

No your the jackass. Open your eyes and smell the coffee. GCSE dont mean anything much. Many of my older friends got G's and F's for their gcses and next year theyre on their way to uni doing some kind of I.T degree or something.

My mum had crap results yet she keep learning and training throughout her life and now is on 80 grand and my dad didnt have any gcses at all and hes a estate manager in canary wharf.

It shows you that gcses are basically well not all that the school made it out to be.
I have freinds who droipped out of school in yr 10 went to college did a 4 year mechanics course in one year and now works for BMW and gets 400 pounds a week.

Obviously you would rather have A's thand D's but generaly whatever you want to do in live your D's have are not going to get in the way. it might make things a bit harder as people with better grades will get prefernces over you obviously but gcses at the end of the day still are nothing. Just like the SAT's. All the gcses have done is weed out the really naturally dumb from the people that are employable.

Mechanics, i saw a mechanics course and it said "required grades, none" because there isnt anything in GCSEs to help with mechanics.

Thats the whole idea, id rather get a job ahead of some dumbass with my grades, i couldnt think of anything worse than being rejected because some dude got higher grades, why settle for little when you can have more.
 
I've not been asked even ONCE about my GCSE results, other than on the day I got them.

Similarly, since results day 1996, I've not been asked even ONCE about my A-Level results.


On a grand scale of importance, measured from 0 to Grand Unified Theory, your GCSE results manage to score somewhere around 1. Honestly. Count the number of times you're asked about them, starting from the second week of the coming school year.
 
Well, my parents also said to me if you don't get every good grades with your GCSE's, it doesn't matter unless you fail in the subject you want to do.

When I get older, I'll probably want to do something to do with I.T, and that's what you should focus on, everything else doesn't matter. If you change your mind later on, then you can learn that other subject.

Mate correct me if im wrong but you got C's and D's.

As for my parents not doing gcses well they did have a kind of equivelant back then to our gcses. Basically my dad didnt have any kind of real education and my mom was globe trotting with her mom when most kids would be in highschool.

80% of the kids in my school failed to pass their GNVQ ICT but my school is just rubbish on the whole. Depending on what ICT course you want to do you need different qualifications. One of my friends wanted to do the most advance one the college had to offer but he got a D for his english which the college wanted a C minimum. They offered him a place anyhow and another boy who wanted to do the exact same course got E's and F's but they gave him a 6 week trial.

Another kid from my school is also in 6th form after getting all E's and D's and the entry requirements were 5 A-C's.
As for the mechanics required grades it differes from every college and the amount of people that want to do that course.

Potential employers prefer experience to grades and many employers want people who they know have got practical evryday skills and not just be able to qoute from their textbook.

True, but you study really hard to get good results for several subjects and your just going to do I.T, it's a waste of time then isn't it?

If I got mostly A's then yeah I would be super proud as not many people get all A's.
But anything less isnt really to be proud about unless you were severly disadvantage and made major leaps to get like say a C and beat everyones expectations.
 
I was being general, not aiming that at anyone. but obviously if you prefer to do well in ICT then you would work harder in it.

I wanted to work hard and try to do well because i wanted to do my best and not fail. If other people see it in a different light. Oh well.
