Is it just me or are there an increasing amount of tunes out there using fully tuned ratios to out pull their opponents?

I know these tunes exist because I have seen and heard people talking about them. With all the dedicated draggers out there, it's only going to increase in popularity. You can tell the people who rely on them by their track choices too.

I know i am just hating because I don't have them, but it still sucks gobbling someone up in the corners only to watch them drive off on the straights.

What do others think?

Where's the thread, if it exists, talking about these tunes in detail?

God forbid people use properly chosen gear ratios. Wouldn't want to force you to learn anything.

P.S. Check the tuning forum.

Why would anyone think that gearing is the secret to the game? It's just something that should be looked at as a comfort adjustment. It's always the last thing I adjust after I set the top speed so I'm not reved out at the end of the longest straight.

Just make sure your not shifting up right before you have to down shift going into a turn. I run A/T so Kaz does my shifting, I just make sure that none of the gears are having an argument and there isn't any odd power conditions that would have you in some bogging out condition and it's pretty obvious when your pulling hard through the gears.

I don't understand either!

How do you tune gears so that they are in the powerband most of the time?

Wouldn't a close ratio box have the fastest acceleration possible?

If you install the 'fully tuneable' gearbox, it can be close ratio when you need and high top speed when you need. Unless it's not allowed, I install the full house box on all my cars. Pity about the sound, tho.

It's not THE Secret, but it is A secret. Just like when YOU pull a noob who either doesn't have the custom tranny or doesn't know how to tune for max straight speed. Now people are going beyond just basically moving the slider and using final gears or individual gears or both to gain the same Kind of advantage, but it's harder to figure out.

you have to look at the individual car's powerband, basically where you see the torque peak is where you want to stay around for maximum pull, it usually drops off after a certain RPM so staying near the rev limiter isn't always the best option, an easy way to get some pull on tracks with long straights is to lower the ratios for 3rd/4th/5th gear, for instance on nurburgring you need that top speed for the straight but if you want to maintain pull through the rest of the track adjusting the lower gears should give you better acceleration to set the pace. another thing often overlooked is turbos and how they affect the powerband, even when detuning the engine's HP different turbo stages will yield different results as far as how much torque you can get without going over a certain HP.

The gearbox is only second to my suspension in my garage. On the Indy Road time trial awhile back with the FGT I gained 5.3 seconds on my fastest stock time on gearing alone. This is why I wish we had a setup per track or infinite setups and just save them to the PS3. 2, 3, 4 gears and final drive are my bread and butter. This is not a drag secrete, it's race tuning common practice.

well see OP, you have to purchase a custom gearbox. then you go to a track. and discover the best gear ratio's through trial and error. my ford GT doesn't pull 160mph through the 1/4 mile and 240mph+ through the standing mile while still crushing LMPs at laguna seca just because i changed the final gear ratio. i have over 1500 miles on my GT and it took me ages to get a good gearbox tuning. but thanks to my work i can hit 255+ at SSR7 and over 230 in 5th gear.

I race the FGT weekly and have mastered the entire tune except the gearing, care to share? :)
I am looking for a gearbox tune I can set and then just adjust the final gear for specific tracks.

As an experienced dragger, I can tell you there are MANY more things you can do other than simply changing the final gear ratio and flipping the tranny. In some cases, a well tuned tranny will be equivalent to around 50+ HP.
