Thought of that, but I really need a Windows update, 2000 is like 9 years old lol. Im not too sure about Vista, but thinking of XP for a short time and switching to Vista later this year.
 
Oh cripes 2000?!!!

Yeah, definately upgrade to xp if your machine can handle it.
 
Time for a new machine then methinks!

What are the specs on your current machine?
 
Just placed an order for an External HD, 250gigs. I always have stuff running in the background, but I dont know what half of them are. Closing them dosent help either.

Get a new PC then. There is no point of repairing it if its just too much trouble. But if you insist of repairing it, don't bother trying to transfer your files. It will just makes the PC lag again (or make problems) once you repaired it. Just try to remove many of your unimportant files from your PC as well as removing any unused softwares. If the problem still persist, well just send the PC to a shop and see whats the problem.
 
Is it ok if I transfer lets say, quite alot of Top Gear episodes? lol. The current C-Drive is gonna get formatted, and the 250gig HD will get WinXP, guess most of my problems will be over...for a bit of time.

*sigh..... I got my Top Gear episodes corrupted :(*

But yeah, you can do that, but a word of warning. I don't know much about reformatting the C drive, but shouldn't the Windows file gets erased as well? But if you think this would solve your problem, then just do it. You won't regret it if your PC won't start back again..... 👍 :lol:
 
It sounds to me like you have a really bad virus running in your computer. Back up any pic's, video, word documents and then install a fresh version of windows. Should get rid of all your problems. Remember you will need all the drivers for the motherboard like USB, raid if use it, and other peripherals.

It sounds to me like you have a really bad virus running in your computer. Back up any pic's, video, word documents and then install a fresh version of windows. Should get rid of all your problems. Remember you will need all the drivers for the motherboard like USB, raid if use it, and other peripherals.

If it is a bad virus, wont my Norton AV pick it up sooner or later? I always do a scan every Friday night, and ive only got rid of maybe 4 or so virusus.

Well, y'know, a degree of logical thought wouldn't go amiss here. That Windows CD isn't there to collect dust, and Google does more than just locate porn.

Nonetheless... Assuming your PC doesn't have a shortcut key for a choice of boot options, you'll have to enter the BIOS and do a bit of...rearranging. Basically hit del or whatever the shortcut is for you and enter the BIOS (it'll say press del to enter setup or whatever). Can't quite remember the ins and outs of it, but basically once you're in, you re-arrange the order of which component it tries to boot from first (floppy disk, CD drive, Hard drive etc). Stick CD drive at the top, then hit escape and press Y to save. Oh and make sure you've actually got the Windows disk in - that's probably a good idea. Then just follow Windows's menu thing, and select the one that's NOT repair. It'll basically format and reinstall (taking years, probably), and voila.

It might if your computer was working and its not. A friend of my wife has an AMD system that was giving her trouble and asked me to look at it. She had a bad stick of ram, a bad ram slot but worst of all there was a virus that would show up in the task manager every once in a while but the computer was soooooo slow I couldn't get rid of it. Now it just sits because she doesn't have the original XP disks that cam with the computer. There's a reason why to keep those install disks that come with a new computer.
 
Back, without XP but rather with 2000 again. The XP disc didnt work whatsoever, so we ended up loading 2000 again, but only till we find an XP disc. Right now, im downloading stuff like MSN, Media player etc.
 
Did you format the hard drive before trying to install XP? I'm not sure the installation works as an upgrade to 2000 unless you have an XP upgrade disc.
 
It was the disc, we tried every possible option to change, and found the disc was faulty. I now am happy with 2000, its much faster, and everything works well :)
