It's often said that many people drive a BMW because of brand image. With the new 1 series even BMW themselves have said it provides a chance for buyers to own a bimmer at a lower price. With all this niche widening which are the real BMWs, the stand out models of the past and present that were, are much better than the competition and make a BMW worth owning?

e46 M3 👍

top one is BMW M3 CSL, lighter & more power than the normal M3, argueably the best nat atmo 6 in the world, it is definately one of the best performance cars there is, even for the money

BMW 850i - 5 litre V10. bmw sized pricetag, bmw sized luxury and style, bmw sized fuel bill

there is a massive difference between any of these cars (exc the isetta :sly: ), which are purebred examples of german engineering and refined race technology brought to the street and autobahn, and a hairdresser car 3 series which is basically a leather sofa and awesome stereo with wheels. anybody who thinks they're a bmw enthusiast because they own a 320i (or 1 series :yuck: ) is tossing themselves

a good movie with a bimmer car chase is ronin, starring robert de niro, which pits some fwd piece of rubbish against an m5 - hell yeah :D

The 1972 Euro spec e3 BMW 3.0 Si had electronic fuel injection, 4 wheel discs and a top speed of 140 mph. 👍

In 1973/74 BMW made Europe's first turbo car, the 2002 turbo with 170 bhp. 0-60 in 6.6 seconds was impressive for a 2 liter car in those days. Note the mirror script spoiler to warn slower cars to make way. :)

Actually, it was a 5.4 SOHC V12, not a V10. The new M5 is the first BMW road car with a V10.

My pick for great BMWs would be the original E30 M3. I owned one many years ago, and still think about it to this day. Its not the fastest thing out there, and was a bit gruff looking with the big fenders and wing, but it was a great car. Thats what got me into auto-x back in the day, and it was a great car for that. Only had a 4-cyl, but with 200hp, it was plenty quick. Great car, that lead to many more great M3s down the road.

One of the Funnest cars I drove was the 8 Series, the Mayor of Fort Worth owned one, And I went to pick it up, and take it back to his house, pretty damn fun I say. Had a nice mellow sound, and pretty hard clutch. All the Bimmer's are fun to drive, except the X3's of course ;) Another thing that's fun about driving them is pretty much every car is a rice-killer, it's so fun watching the little 4 banger's behind you, no offense to any rice-owner here, as I own a 4 cylinder as well, still fun doing it though.

anyone remember the 750iL or 735 from that movie "The Transporter"?

that thing was bad.

Yea, I think that was a euro-spec 735i. We never got the straight 6 in that generation of 7-series here, nor did we get a manual trans. But, it was pretty cool. Honestly, I'd rather have a 5-series for something like that, the 7-series seems a bit big. But either way, it was a decent car. Pretty lame movie, but the car scenes were good.

Someone say Old School BMW's?

BMW E30 M3

BMW E34 M5

E30 and E36 M3

BTW these were uploaded by this guy I know from another forum so thanks to him. :D

Elvis owned a BMW 507, that car was styled by Goertz, the person that styled the Datsun 240Z, he also did this car the 503 V8. It was an expensive convertible & coupe, much respected but due to a high price didn't sell well.

i'll testify to that. my first car was a BMW E21 318i, with a slipping original clutch and about 350,000km on the clock - and i could still smoke a brand new mitsubishi lancer (gli or mr, not evo of course). lots of offence to rice-owners :sly:

The one bmw that needs more regonition is the e30 318is (only made in 1991). Its lighter then the m3, gets 50mpg on the freeway, 30 overall with my driving it like i stole it, and will last 300,000 miles. For what it lacks in speed it makes up in handling, even though the acceleration is nothing to be ashamed of. This is all coming from someone who ones both a 318is and an e36 m3

My parents also own a 850 which is the ultimate crusing car. My dad drives an x5 4.6 every day and that thing is a sleeper. It handles like an suv shouldn't
